Another visit to Katz's tonight. Unlike my last trip on a Saturday afternoon, the place was relatively empty and one could walk right up to the counters and be served. I ordered a large takeout order to partly feed a group of 12. Got 3.5 pounds of pastrami, 2 quarts matzo ball soup, 2 pounds potato salad. Forgot to get latkes! Note: cooked, sliced hot pastrami is $20.30/pound. Uncooked bulk pastrami (2 to 4 pounds) is $10.50/pound. But they only charged me $45 for the pastrami, the cashier forgot to charge me for the tater salad, so we did fine. Nice just fattier than lean pastami this time. Our hostess would have preferred fattier (not to mention those latkes), but then again we would have had pizza and chinese delivered if I hadn't gone to Katz's so any complaints were subdued and ignored by me.

I think visual aids would be a good idea. If you don't want to carry cold burgers with you, you could prints phots, or have 'em link a pee-cee in the studio to burger photos. Perhaps carve the rules of Burger Club onto a Stone Tablet? break a leg,

Perhaps the Durian Pie should be saved for an outdoor venue, rather than in our friends' apartment? I will be doing something lemony, that doesn't require any expertise with beef.

Welcome shivon. I think there was some mention of Rare somewhere in this Burger Club topic. As a newcomer you have the daunting challenge, shoud you decide to accept it, of catching up on the previous 50 pages of almost 1500 messages. At the topic level of the board, near the bottom is a box that says 'search this forum'. Your could enter RARE in that box, but you will get every message in which the word appears. Still it should cut down the number of messages to read. Better yet, you'll get a new response or someone will point you to the right place. The search for the best burger is indeed a noble quest. Here's a link CLICK HERE to one comment on Rare. (edited to add link)

You may wish to dispel the description of a Burger Club as "mainly middle-aged white collar types." BC represents a wider cross-section of people than that, and has even drawn a visitor from across the sea. The total cholesterol content of a typical 12 person BC outing totals 1800 and we weigh 1800 pounds (averaging 150). We are 66 feet tall and totally waterproof. On second thought, use your own material. EG stats: over 8600 members, over 440,000 posts BC stats: 1450 posts, almost 26,000 views (edited to add last two lines)

hmmmpf "no real expertise in beef" Just throw me out of the club right now. Wait till you taste my pie in two weeks - I have less baking expertise.

Portnoy just needed raw calve's liver.

They may well have charged us for the apps. They just appeared and I thought they were being nice to the group. I didn't read the check that closely (didn't even count burgers), but merely figured out what multiple of 17 we needed to cover the bill. Our server got a nice tip (and cookies to boot).

Birthday girl Suzanne and 16 others enjoyed a good afternoon meeting of Burger Club at Blue Smoke. We got menus with "Welcome eGullet Burger Club!" printed on them. We all enjoyed the burgers (BondGirl had catfish) and they probably will earn the club's highest score to date. We got freebies of cheddar wafers and hush puppies and mini milk-shakes. A reporter and photographer from the Times were there to interview and photograph us - check tomorrow's Metro section. Getting all the burgers out with the proper degree of doneness continues to be a challenge, with both over and undercooked orders. Nice people work at Blue Smoke. Now I must go back and have barbecue.

By the time I develop symptoms, I won't know whether it's natural, mad cow, or other remnants of my shady past. I say damn the torpedos, full steam ahead.

Yes, yogurt. These were healthy galettes.

At my sister-in-law's tonight for the last night of Hanukah we were served what they called "galettes." Basically potato pancakes without the egg because my niece is vegan. They were tasty, but were these really galettes or just latkes. They were also frying pan sized and cut into wedges rather than silver dollars. Served with applesauce, cranberry sauce, and yogurt. I did have a small snifter of some very tasy pear brandy afterwards. My diabetes nutrionist would be horrified with my no-protein, all carb meal.

Mad Cow hysteria won't keep me away from Burger Club. Since my spouse has been scared by the media, I need BC to get my beef.

Thanks for fixing my link, Karen. I left an extra http://// in mine.
