  3. I'm sure you dids but I refer to the "malt sandwich" that typically also contains hops and a fair amount of alcohol Glenn is not serving alcohol so you'll have to BYO but he does have killer chocolate milkshakes from what I understand. Best to leave the Milo at home. ← Mental note for me -- reread my foodblog

  6. Today was food shopping day for Vicky and I, so while she's at work I headed down to Shoprite. Cruising through there I came across a huge stand of dried chiles, being a chile head I grabbed a pack of anchos and a pack of pasillas. Hey at a $1.99 who wouldn't, ANYWAY....... while I'm not that fond of chicken, I was thinking pork in a mole sauce (never made it before) and now I need help with a great recipe. HELP!!!!! Cheers Tom
  7. Woke up hungover as hell this morning so breakfast ended up being a chorizo and pancetta burrito .... I'm still trying to work out if that was a good idea or not. Cheers Tom
  8. If you want your own malt sandwich you'll have to bring that as well ← Don't worry, do you really think I moved to NJ without a couple of jars of vegemite and 2 tins of Milo?? Cheers
  9. I was just having a good look at Melt's menu and I'm totally in shock and awe. Glenn, Branston pickle?? Where did you find it? - tell me, tell me, tell me. Is it Crosse & Blackwell?? However as per usual nothing for the Australian's taste ... I'm gonna have to bring my own vegemite.... Cheers Tom
  10. Well Lou, you can count Vicky and me in straight away, regardless of day, date, snow (hey snow's possible in Jersey in April) Cheers Tom
  11. Hey Tracey - Vicky and I are definitely in the next time you go. Haven't seen you or Lou since the sushi lunch at Nori last year, and besides it's not like AAG is a secret to us NJ eGulleters Cheers Tom
  12. Don't worry Suzi, I know exactly what you mean about yesterday's snow. Breakfast yesterday morning was a pot of coffee, a lb of bacon and 4 eggs sunnyside up. Sorry but when I'm faced with snow like yesterday, I need comfort
  13. V and I stayed at the Trop over New Years. Food wise it's the usual casino fare as far as I'm concerned. We ate at Carmine's, grabbed raw oysters and clams at the raw bar upstairs in the Quarter and got comped at Wellington's the next night. Carmine's is decent and casual. The Raw Bar upstairs in the Quarter isn't bad, prices are good when you finally do want a real beer, not watered down casino beer And Wellington's I enjoyed - slightly upscale but decent food!!! As for upgrades and comps... Join the Tropicana Diamond Club (downstairs in the Quarter), that way upgrades and comps come quicker just dont forget to use the card. Cheers Tom
  14. Ahhhhh my first NJ blizzard. For V and I, it was lamb shanks, braised in Guiness with dumplings. Looks like Lou and I were thinking pretty much the same sort of comfort food for this fucked up weather. Why do I think I'm really going to miss Australian winters Cheers Tom
  15. I'd have to say : An American Grill (bows to Lou); Francesca's (waits for the smack in the head from suzi) and Nori (waits for applause from curlz) Have a happy holiday guys and girls Cheers Tom
  16. There was definitely eel --- you just have to be quicker Rosie
  17. Oh God I'm still laughing at Rosie, between her pictures from Down Under and coming up to certain men's waists As for the food, I do enjoy Nori, but it definitely isn't a high class sushi/sashimi joint. The pieces are too large and the sashimi is cut too thick (man I bitch like Lou) BUT value for money it is a good deal - barring Curlz it worked out at $35 a head (including tip). As for the rolls - I can take them or leave them, I actually prefer the nigiri sushi BUT I did enjoy the Montclair roll and that will be on my "have again". Thanks for a good lunch guys, for the record, the wine didn't screw up my passing my written driver's test - STAY OFF THE ROADS!!!!!!! - Cheers Tom and V
  18. V and I had the pleasure of stopping in at An American Grill for lunch last Friday. I'm going to admit it now, this place is going to become a favourite very quickly, from the decor, to the staff, to Lou's happy smiling face, and to the food how can you go wrong? We were seated very quickly by Lou, ok, ok I admit we were the first ones into the dining room but after XMas shopping all morning I needed beer and food badly and yes in that order. Drink orders were taken, bread brought out and V and I started perusing the menu. We decided to skip the appetizers and it was a good thing we did as we were comped and outstanding bruschetta. Now let me explain this, my wife is Italian American and knows her bruschetta - her comment was that it was the best she had EVER had. Toasted crusty bread, covered with tomato, red onion, prosciutto, and fresh mozarella. The flavours melded together beautifully and it's now one of those things on my must have list. V followed this up with a cajun shrimp salad. As per usual V wasn't going to share a bite but kept saying how great it was. Damn selfish if you ask me I ordered the ribeye steak sandwich, served on a crusty roll,, with potato and peppers. It was cooked to absolute perfection and OMG was it good. All in all it was a damn good lunch and my compliments go out to Lou and all of his staff. Cheers Tom
  19. As of this moment V and I are definitely in!!! We've missed enough eG lunches, dinners and potlucks, it's time to start making up for it See ya all there. Cheers Tom
  20. I was at Nori last week and they had fresh Uni on the menu at that time. At this stage I could possibly be in for 2 people. Just let me know where it's going to be held and then I'll talk to the SOH Cheers Tom

  25. V and I flew into Sydney Monday afternoon, for an appointment at the US Consulate for my US greencard (My wife's a US citizen so she didn't have to apply), and a couple of days of sight seeing and general fun. WOW what a change in temperature upon arrival - 8C in Adelaide to 20C in Sydney, it was nice to be semi warm again. We stayed at the York Aprtment Hotel which in our mind was a good choice seeing that it's fairly central to the CBD, The Rocks, Darling Harbor, and Circular Quay. Monday night we met up with a friend and decided to have a a nice quiet meal so we could just talk. We ended up at the Forbes Hotel (read pub ). We started with bruschetta which was nice and fresh. The tomato was still crisp and the bread it was served on still had the right amount of crunch and wasn't soggy at all. I finally decided to have the New York cut sirloin (rare of course), V had the fish and chips and our friend had the grilled salmon. My steak was cooked to perfection and came with scalloped potatoes and a huge bowl of vegetables. V enjoyed her fish and chips so much I couldn't even get the smallest taste. Friend raved about his salmon and again I had no hope of getting to taste any of it - the gall of some people . Unfortunately I have no idea what the meal cost as our friend picked up the check. After dinner we headed downstairs to the bar and had a couple of quiet drinks and continued our converation. Tuesday was the day of the interview so we basically ran out of our hotel and headed to the consulate, grabbing a Starbucks each on the way. After the consulate appointment we headed down to Circular Quay, grabbing a couple of Krispy Kreme donuts for lunch, so we could get the ferry across to the zoo. After walking ourselves to death at the zoo we decided to have dinner at Doyle's at the Rocks (heading to Watson's Bay was to much of a headfuck for me after such a busy day). All in all I'd rate the meal at Doyle's about an 8. The view from the restaurant was absolutely superb with our table overlooking the Quay and the beautifully lit Opera House. I started with a tequila Bloody Mary and V had a glass of chardonnay (sorry I can't remember the name). For entrees, I thoroughly enjoyed the dozen oyster kilpatrick that I had. V decided to try the fish and blue swimmer crab soup. While V enjoyed it her opinion was that it was a little bland and didn't have the right amount of crab in it to balance the fish. For mains V decided to have the BBQ tuna steak, which she described as superb. It had just the right amount of char to it while still being rare - I really have to teach her to share as yet again I had no hope of even getting a taste. I decided to splurge and settled on the whole lobster mornay, as far as I'm concerned this was great. The sauce had just enough cheese but not too much as to overpower the taste of the lobster. We decided to skip dessert seeing that we wanted to get our fill of Krispy Kremes while we were in Sydney With drinks the total bill was $200. Because we were doing the tourist thing, Wednesday morning we headed down to Darling Harbor and visited the aquarium, the just walked around Harborside before deciding on where to have lunch. Finally we decided that seeing we were in Sydney we'd do the seafood again and grabbed a table at Jordans. Because the weather was great we decided to sit outside and enjoy the sun and the seabreeze. V started with a glass of the 2003 Petaluma riesling while I had a tequila Bloody Mary (can ya see a pattern here? ). We decided to skip entrees and go the whole hog, finally deciding on the Jordans deluxe seafood platter for two. As far as I'm concerned this was a great choice and we thoroughly enjoyed every single bite. The platter was made up of a whole lobster, 2 blue crabs, 2 bugs, a dozen oysters, half a dozen prawns, a bowl of spiced prawns, a bowl of BBQ baby octopus, some deep fried calamari strips, 4 fried fish fillets, a large bowl of mussels in a light tomato sauce and of course the mandatory chips Man did we make pigs of ourselves, the only thing left on the platter were some of the fries. The total bill for all of this including drinks (1 BM and 4 glasses of wine between us) was $174. All in all a great time was had by us in Sydney and we look forward to returning again. Cheers Tom PS For those that want to know --- I'm now a US resident
