  1. Will everyone stop talking about Kirin before I have to get in my car and start driving!!
  2. Succumbing to my pedantic tendencies, I have to point out that Woodinville is in King County. I like Maxwell's in Marysville for burgers, greasy breakfasts and such....
  3. Ahh that would be the Guadalupe Market which is technically in Burien. One of my favorite places to shop. Goat can be found in any self-respecting halal market, of which there are several in Tukwila and the Rainier Valley. What does goat taste like, hmmmm, maybe like mild lamb? Not sure that's the best description, but the best I can do at the moment....
  4. tighe, Since your comment refers to my own, whether directly or not, my response is that if, as a professional reviewer, one wants to be taken seriously, snark diminishes one's influence. Most of the reviews on eGullet, unless I am vastly mistaken, are written by people who are not professionally employed to perform said activity. There is a difference. ← What makes you believe that GAF is a professional reviewer? He "teaches sociology at Northwestern", so I imagine that's his full-time job. Having spent some time in academia myself, I know that self-published reviews of non-academic books don't count towards one's publication record, so I'm really not getting how you feel he's subject to the standards of a "professional reviewer." Soba, tell me the last time you, or anyone else here, objected to a restaurant review on the grounds that it wasn't objective? Rarely if ever I would imagine. Objections to restaurant reviews here are nearly always challenged with other opinions, you offered no opinion on the book, just an objection to the tone and approach of the review. That is very different than the typical back and forth here...
  5. This is quite amusing. Thousands of reviews of restaurants are posted on this site that are full of bias and 'snarkiness' and often it's applauded. Why is the standard for a book review posted here so vastly different? Get over yourselves already.
  6. Imperial Garden is my 'go-to' place for dim sum as well. I haven't had better anywhere in Seattle.
  7. Well, I'm not a carnitas afficionado, so I won't make any pronouncements about how they "should" be. I will say that I've never thought the carnitas at Muy were particularly dry however, so maybe you got a bad batch. The asada and al pastor (my fav) are sometimes dry. One thing I will say about Muy is that there's definitely variability in some of the qualities of the food. Try the ribs at Rascals, they're unconventional, but tasty.
  8. I think the more fundamental question is, why is it such an affront to a chef to have someone lean on the pass? Should I take offense next time someone comes to talk to me and puts a hand on my desk? This is the stuff that gives chefs the rep of being more high strung than thoroughbreds. Get over yourself for godsake.
  9. We got some of their bread at last week's market and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, they'd sold out of pain au chocolat. Their retail space is going to be about a block south of the market location on Rainier.
  10. Yes, Daimonji is surprisingly good. I'd skip the sushi, not their strong suit.
  11. Welcome to the 'hood FJ! Scrat and I are just up the hill to the south of you. Believe it or not, Rascals Casino has decent food, both Chinese and of the Burgers and ribs variety. Muy Macho is my favorite of the Mexican options. Two Tartes Bakery in Georgetown is great. Of course White Center isn't too far away and offers a whole bunch of good and cheap Asian and Mexican food.
  12. Glad you enjoyed your meal. Can you tell us a little about what you had, I'm curious about what else is good on the menu.
  13. Where's Fish when you need him?? I'm sure he'd love to jump on this bandwagon.
  14. If that's your thing, you should check out the 'Corson Classic' at Stellar Pizza in Georgetown. Unconventional but very tasty.
  15. FWIW, I've been told the PS location isn't as good as the 3rd & Stewart location, though I've never been.
  16. I'm definitely a Zaina fan. My favorite is the 'falafel supreme', kind of a big salad with all kinds of good stuff on top of a pita. I've found, however, that who makes your food can make a significant difference. I always try to work it so the older lady puts together my order.
  17. If true, let's hope Vij is in control of the food and the WG people stick to designing the space...
  18. There was an aritcle in the Times (PI?) a week or so ago that said exactly that. Apparently he can no longer spare the storage space it requires to do the adoption program. The most startling think in the article however was that some of the prosciuttos were apparently 'orphaned' after their 'parents' just stopped showing up to take care of them...
  19. They got a plug in the New York Times recently as well. And I haven't been yet because....?
  20. Pancake Chef in Tukwila....no, really... I'm hardly a pancake conossieur, but I always enjoy them.
  21. While I love many of the places on Penelope's list, I think the fact that her list of "favorites" consists entirely of middle and lower end places is indicative of her limitations as a reviewer.
  22. Should we start the write-in campaign to get mamster hired for the position?...
  23. Agree with Duck and Rex but we actually like the Torii Mor wines quite a bit. The attitude?? not always so great, but the wines age really nicely IMHO If you do decide on a b&b we have stayed at Youngberg Inn 5 times now and wouldn't stay anywhere else. They are wonderful and it is an amazing inn on a working farm/vineyard. Their wine is only ok though ← My issues with Torrii Mor are multifaceted. Pain in the butt to get to, don't like the 'tude, their white wines are wretched and only their expensive reds are good. I know they have a lot of fans, so I'm willing to accept that it's really about me....
  24. Ponzi is associated with the Dundee Bistro (a good place for lunch) and has a tasting room adjacent to it. Some places that haven't been mentioned yet.... The Carleton Winemakers Studio is a cooperative effort between some small producers. They charge for tasting, but provide some interesting items. Cuneo is right next door and worth a stop, particularly if you want to try something other than pinots. There is also a great wine shop in Carleton that provides tasting of wines from wineries not generally open to the public. WillaKenzie is a little bit of a trek, but beautiful location and great wines. Places to avoid IMNSHO: Torii Mor, Duck Pond, Rex Hill
