  1. I had breakfast at Hi-Life last week and liked it a lot. I'm particularly taken with their transformation of the Firehouse.
  2. Maximilien's New Year's Eve shindig. Not sure about the music, but the menu sounds tasty.
  3. I've gone a few times. Interesting Latino desserts and some more conventional stuff too. I believe they serve lunch as well. If you went to Muy Macho, White Center is up the hill to the west. There are a couple taco trucks and several Asian joints in the neighborhood as well.
  4. CC's at 26th & Union for a burger. Muy Macho in South Park for tacos. Imperial Garden in Renton/Kent for dim sum.
  5. It's been some time since I've eaten there, but I liked the Teapot Vegetarian House on Capital Hill (125 15th Ave E). Nearly everything on the menu is vegan.
  6. I've eaten there once since they abandoned the Mexican/Southwestern theme....not good. What potential there may have been was obliterated.
  7. You aren't possibly suggesting that one of these certificates would be obtainable through some means other than rigorious training, long practice and devotion to the craft, are you?
  8. If you're looking for a burger, I highly recommend CC's Burgers at 26th & Union. Best 'non-gourmet' burger I've had in Seattle.
  9. I think any time you ask someone "if they need help", it has the potential to come across as being condescending. Safer to ask, "can I answer any questions?" or something along those lines.
  10. I've never been to the Broadway Dick's but have been to the QA one a couple of times and the Wallingford one more times than I'd like to admit. Unfortunately, I've never known them to do any special orders. After many years, we still tease my mother about trying to special order her Dick's Deluxe. (They shot back the same retort you got). There's a cadance to ordering (another soup nazi?!) and, to me, it's part of their appeal. ← Surprising to me to hear this. I used to order Deluxes with no cheese all the time and never had a problem.
  11. Via Tribunali. It's being discussed over on the 'NY Style Pizza in Seattle' thread....
  12. I rented this place outside of Cortona a few years ago. Great place and the people who manage this group of properties are very nice.
  13. When my wife was pregnant, we asked the chef at our favorite sushi place the same question and he said that Japanese women eat sushi throughout pregnancy. There is a lot of conflicting information on the topic, but the chances of having a problem if you're getting sushi from a quality provider are very, very slight. It may be a good idea to avoid fish that are more prone to parisites, like salmon and go easy on tuna because of the mercury.
  14. Dave, Do you know the exact date? I couldn't find it on the Beard web page. There's a good chance I'll be in NYC the third week of March.
  15. Brasserie Margaux's Christmas Day menu. I think this sounds particularly good:
  16. Oddly enough, that link takes you to a search for reservations at Emeril's in New Orleans. I originally got the same url for the NYE page, so don't know what's going on. I think this link will work better. I got an email yesterday with Brasserie Margaux's NYE menu. Looks pretty good.
  17. For the last few years it's run during March and November and is usually publisized on nwsource.com. Many restaurants, including Cascadia, Brasserie Margaux, etc, now have $25 menus available year-round.
  18. It's been several years, but I ate at the Hopvine a few times, mostly pizzas. It was always satisfactory, but not compelling. This guy could be relatively new though.
  19. El Vagre Marino in South Park is now La Terrazza. Despite some good press, the place usually looked empty, so I'm not surprised.
  20. who,s list is this??and who were the other 20 if you could provide a link or list that would be appreciated Thanks, Dave s ← It's from a recent article in Esquire by John Mariani. It's available on the Esquire site for a fee. I'm guessing there's already a thread about this over in Food Media & News, but I haven't checked.
  21. It's a fantastic, and well-deserved, honor for Union and Ethan. As lmf said, many of us here are big fans as witnessed by these two threads (among others): Union thread #1 Union thread #2 Welcome to eG ms v-r, hope you'll keep posting about places you like...
  22. Received from Maximilien today: XO Bistro web site Prices are amazingly low IMO. I wonder if these are just introductory and will creep up. Lot's of my favorite classic French items.
  23. Probably because we're all whores for what's new/different/creative. I've only been to The Brooklyn once and thought the food was very good. Probably out of habit more than anything, when I'm looking for straight forward fish-house style dining, I end up at Elliott's or one of the McCormick's places. I know that my Mom loves The Brooklyn. Edited for clarity
  24. It was served ove thin slices of Fuyu persimmon with a huckleberry port sauce. It was spectacular. It was one of those flavor combinations that we mere mortals could never conceive of, yet makes so much sense when tasted. With the exception of the vanilla oil, I thought the whole menu was very successful. After reading the reports of small portions, we supplemented the tasting menu with orders of the torchon of foie gras and the grilled lamb's tongue with beets.
  25. That's what you get for listening to tourists! I loved Pearl, sorry it didn't work out as well for you.
