  1. American schools would be in much better shape if we followed the Japanese example. Thank you for sharing this with us. Can you imagine if American parents were expected to clean their child's smock and return it in two days. Or have children be involved with the serving of their own meal? Or if they had no choice in what was for lunch. I leave you with this parting thought.....in the past two weeks leading up to the last day of school, the majority of my students ate lunch made of processed food.
  2. This thread is a great idea. I do have one suggestion. My monitor is an old fashion standard size, 15 inches I think, and I can't see the whole photo. I can't be the only poor slob reading on a small screen. Could we pick a standard size that we know will fit on all screens? I did not get the full effect of the first two pics because they were too big to see all at one. Rant over. You may not return to your regularly scheduled critiquing.
  3. I am humbled by your cheese steak eating ability. One of the disadvantages of being a petite little thing is that I can only take in one cheesesteak in a 24 hour period. Glad you made it to D'Allesandros. If you make it out again, perhaps to try Chubbies across the street, try sauce on the cheesesteak. Takes care of the dryness. What about the onions? Did you find one place did a better job than another? I think the next time I go visit Grandma we may have to try the pork and brocolli rabe. That thing looks increadible. If only I didn't have to go to work tomorrow.
  4. I have become a big fan of Urban BBQ. The ribs are as good if not better than anything else I have had around here. My current obsession now is the pulled pork. I am far from a BBQ officianado, but the pork tastes the way I think it should (or as it has been described around here). Juicy and full of flavor. The throw some of the rub on top with adds a tiny bit of kick. I like all three sauces and having the variety to choose from. Usually I end up combinging the tomato and vinegar based sauces. I haven't tried any of the sauces on the wall 'cause the dining in options suck. There is a high table with stools that can seat about 4-6. I have only tried a few of the sides, but my favorite are the mashed potatoes. The greens are too sweet for my liking, although they are full of pieces of bacon. I pour some of the vinegar based sauce over then which helps. The roll is a roll, but for Montgomery County the corn bread is pretty damn good. Especially when dipped in pork juice. They are now doing a buy 6 meals get one free deal. I only have two more to go!
  5. I keep forgetting to ask.....what is Bloomsday?
  6. I invented a Watermellon Colada for a dinner party I had a few years ago. Frozen watermellon Creme de coconut (or whatever they put in Pina Coladas) Mint Rum or Vodka Put in a blender until smooth
  7. Especially when they have been sitting in a hot car all day. Eeewwwwww They are in applesauce, fruit roll-ups, juice boxes/puches and icing. The applesauce is just disturbing.
  8. I have a friend who calls it the geezer bar. I can't remember if it is Irish Times or Dubliner that is in the hotel. I've never left sober so I can't remember. Anyway, I prefer the one in the hotel. It is the preffered bar of Irish congressional staffers on St. Patrick's Day. The other is big with the college crowd.
  9. i will post long, boring thoughts about some of this after lunch. in the meantime here's some more pictures for you to look at: 1. pics from our recent trip back to lost angela 2. pics from our trip to india in the winter Excellent. Thank you. Let me know if you want to know anything about Jew food in return.
  10. Dominique's will always have a special place in my heart. I had my first fine dining experience there at the age of 5. All I remember was a having a huge steak and an extra helping of what I assume were pomme frites. Diana was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. My father was a regular there in the '80's so we were treated like princesses. I fell in love with the French, their food and language when Dominique came to the table. A few years later I had the Friday-night-before-my-Bat Mitzvah dinner there. I never felt so grown up or elegant. I am too young to feel this old when talking about Dominiques.
  11. number nine number nine number nine number nine number nine I know absolutely nothing about Indian food, culture, etc. Could you tell us if and how you have combined cultures in Boulder? Do you find you eat more like us Westerners now that you are in middle America?
  12. Teasim has a nice selection of dishes you can't find anywhere else around there. And the ever popular BdC. Do they do carryout? Of course, soon you'll be able to have Krispy Kremes for lunch
  13. natto cilantro (in any form) natto Hostess snowballs (purple are my favorite) natto grass flavored jelly bellys natto skin from roasted chicken and turkey natto
  14. oppps, that's what happens when you post after a glass of wine or two. Yes, I meant Kotobuki. I don't know what the exact delivery dates are but I am guessing that he gets a shipment on Tuesday (after the weekend) and towards the end of the week (Thursday or Friday). As for the uni, I have always had great luck. I have noticed that there is a difference in quality of the way the sushi is made when the chef makes it and when his assistant is at the helm of my meal.
  15. bump I have dined at Yakomoto three times this month. I went on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday evening. Each time I dined early in the evening. It was packed all three nights. Granted they can only seat about 25, but for that neighborhood I was impressed. The quality of the fish has always been excellent. The rice always tasted fresh and well seasoned. I love the soy sauce (the chef makes his own). I took a friend who after years of staying in the safety end of shrimp and tuna was ready to venture forth into more adventurous waters. At $1 a piece it was the perfect place. She discovered that she loves ikura, white tuna, toro, scallop and still doesn't like uni. We ate $50 of sushi which included four pieces of uni, eight pieces each of white tuna and toro, and four pieces of ikura. That alone is at least $30 bucks or so anywhere else. On my second visit three weeks later the hostess and chef immediately recognized me. The chef greeted me and told me that they had natto as I walked to my table. (I had asked for it on my previous visit and he was out.) All the rolls are $1.95, by the way. I think the trick is to go around delivery dates and early in the evening. The sushi is as good as most places in the city and a complete bargain.
  16. I found the chef I dealt with in February incredibly condescending. I came away with the impression that the chef a) thought he knew more than I did, b) was paid for every time he complimented Jose and c) was tired of answering questions. Both my mother and I were thrilled with the chance to be able to talk with the chef as he was preparing our meal. The sous chef at Tosca was wonderful when we ate in the kitchen. The experience was not duplicated. If you don't want to interact with the customers, why work at minibar?
  17. This is a good first lesson for Peanut. His parent's are food snobs and s/he will therefor eat better than most of his friends. It may not be easy to be different than the rest of the kids, but it certainly tastes better
  18. Other places that emphasize good, local ingredients: Coppi's on U street (wood burning pizza, not expensive) Palena Nora Asia Nora Dupont Farmer's Market on Sunday Jaleo There are a number of visitor threads from the past few months that may be useful as well. Sorry, I'm at work so I can't link it for ya!
  19. Enjoyed a bag of Shrek peanut M&M's while watching Shrek 2 today. The movie is hysterical. I am not the kind of person who usually laughs out loud in theaters, but I couldn't help myself. A real effort was made to entertain adults as well as the kiddies. Well worth the outrageous prices they charge these days.

  21. What a great shot! You should frame that. I vote for going out. Don't bother turning on the stove. You put in your time with those rolls. Oh those rolls. They look divine.
  22. Delesandro's is on Henry Ave. and worth the trip the next time you come down. Now I need one and I won't be in Philly until Sunday. Chubbies will have to do. I went to Budakahn a couple of years ago with my family. When you see the high stools at the communal table, try to imagine my 85 year old grandmother getting onto one of those stools. My cousin-the-lawyer took us there and was thrilled to finally be there on a Saturday night. The food was fine, but not worth the money or hoopla. It's the kind of place that people who think they know food will love. The rest of us know better. I do remember the drinks being better than we expected though. Everyone (including Grandma) ordered one of their specialty drinks. We were more impressed witht he drinks than we were with the food. But that's not saying much. About the food or my family.

    Death to brining

You've got yourselves a photographer. Busboy, check out the roasted chicken at Palena. It's is the best $9 I have spent in a long time. I make a damn good roasted chicken, but I never knew it could taste like this. It may turn the tides in your brinning battle.
