  1. Elie, thank you so much for this wonderful pictorial. The pies look absolutely delicious, especially the ones with the juices flowing out of the snipped slits! We have a long weekend coming up and I would like to try & make these. Oooh, they look like they taste sooooo good!
  2. Very tempting blog, kew/kyu/Q Loving it! We have those apam balik here, too -- some places have them as kueh terang bulan / moonlight cakes, but mostly others just call them martabak manis / sweet murtabak. I like them on occasion, just made simply with condensed milk and nuts, sometimes chocolate. Especially good hot out of the pan, heavily schmeared with Wijsman butter. The fancy-schmancy versions are popping all over the place, fillings with fresh strawberries, blueberries, sweet corn & shredded Kraft cheddar cheese. Those are good hot or cold for breakfast. More, more, more please
  3. You can't possibly begin to imagine my sheer surprise and utter delight in finding these childhood favorites, Haw Flakes! I was at one of my favorite haunts yesterday having a bowl of steaming hot noodle soup with fishballs, when this cute little girl walked by chomping on these. Bug-eyed I dropped my chopsticks and chased after her before she could make it out the door and excitedly asked her where she got them. Her mother looked at me like I was ... well, kinda deranged, but smiled and told me that they were behind the counter and usually got them there on a regular basis. The little girl offered some to me. Sweet thing.
  4. I really like Mayhaw Man's BBQ Shrimp Don't they look goooood?
  5. Don't they look like little hand grenades?
  6. A good friend went to his hometown in East Java and brought back lots of goodies. He only had a half kilo of these, but they all were for me! This is one of my favorite fruits, we call it buah sarikaya/nona. It is pretty ugly looking, and a mess to eat with all the seeds, but the sweet luscious pulp is irresistably addicting!
  7. Malaysia rules!! Hello kew & Tepee, my ASEAN neighbors, I am so happy to see your team blog from my neck of the woods. Hope you will enjoy blogging, because it will certainly be a pleasure spending this week with you two! So, it's almost time for dinner, what's for makan malam? Selamat, Yetty
  8. Whoa, toxic? If mani chai is the same as daun katuk - then here it's most commonly prepared in a simple, clear broth consumed by nursing mothers to stimulate and enrich breast milk.
  9. Absolutely stunning photos! The mani chai look gorgeous! How do they taste & how are they usually prepared?

    Dinner! 2005

Last night my husband came home very tired and asked if I could make him an egg burger. Just a sunny-side up egg on a toasted, buttered sesame seed hamburger bun with lettuce & mayo and he drank Australian Rice Milk with it. I just looked on in awe and watched him go off into blissful sleep. I, on the other hand, had a slice of leftover pizza and a Green Sands. It was that kind of dinner, that kind of day. Feel better soon, Behemoth
  11. They appear to be snakefruit or salak/salat. Is that correct, David?
  12. Ooooh, love pasar pix, David! So, what was your haul?
  13. I think those delicious luscious mangosteens were banned in the hotel because the beautiful fuschia inner shell has beet-like qualities = the color bleeds and stains. Something of concern for hotel housekeeping & laundry? What do y'all think?
  14. Chris, thank you for that marvelous photo tutorial, how much ghee did the pound of butter yield? I really can't tell, but could that be 1 - 1.5 cups?
  15. Deliciousness has escaped me for most of the week. But last night my husband treated me to a new seafood restaurant specializing in grilled and barbecued fish. For an appetizer he ordered this gogoso, which is sticky rice stuffed with a spicy fish concoction, wrapped and steamed in banana leaves then grilled over hot coals. Very delicious!
  16. Heheh, that's just the thing though, Michael. Chopsticks may have been more appropriate for the above meal, don't you think? When eating finger-lickin' good fried chicken, I'll inevitably dip the digits into the coleslaw as well. Sometimes with my homemade baked rigatoni bolognese, I'll fish out and eat the pasta one piece at a time. Doesn't someone else here do that, eat their mac & cheese, one elbow macaroni at a time? Mmm, nasi ulam, that sounds good to me right now.
  17. Awright, awright (squinting from that very bright light shining on my guilty face) I confess. Depending on the food and ambient situation, I prefer to eat sans utensils, just fingertips. I just did this on some cracklin' crisp skinned, juicy succulent roast duck and rice, and garlic-y string beans topped with butter toasted almond slices. However, I do not eat my candy bars with a fork & knife (insert Seinfeld episode somewhere in here ).
  18. Life Savers! ← Hey, I was going to say that! You beat me to it, Joie I'm going to get a roll of them later this afternoon, I forgot what they taste like
  19. Always In style in my book : butterscotch pudding.
  20. Nah, Michael would've known something smelled kinda fishy!
  21. So, who's/what's next?
  22. Hey hey y'all know I don't dig on swine! Not pork rinds, but beef! The dish is popular in Central Java and is called Sambal Goreng Krecek and contains, azuki beans, tofu, birds eye chillies and the beef cracklings, rinds, skins, whatchamacallit! Close, gingerly - oh alright I guess you win this round, too!
  23. Do y'all need a closeup?
  24. Hey, this is kinda fun! All I can say is I've got you under my skin. Prize? Hmmmm....
  25. Yikes, my name was being paged upthread! Ok, here's one for you: No clues yet, I can't think of anything witty now but I've got nothing to hide.
