  1. I'll probably be the only one to vote for lard, but that is probably a deep-seated need to play with animal fat. But by the same token, do you reckon you could use schmaltz ?
  2. Well, see, like I knew that, but what I wanted to be enlightened on was why the name for appliances, too? Is it an acronym?
  3. Thank you! I got out a horticulture book and hell that was like calling a horse a mule. Can you eat the upright one too? Hey, doesn't ANYBODY else want to go to the big tomato fight ? And as far as Pamplona goes, there's testosterone just dripping at that. I am now at the age where even watching young men imitating crash test dummies makes me jittery.

    Need turnip ideas

I like turnips, but agree there are good and bad ways to eat them. What I like is that kind of radishy undertone in them. Some are really quite peppery, and this may really freak the turnip haters, but they make a good crudite. Apples and turnips sliced and roasted together are good. Use wine, a good vinegar, or stock, some good herbs for seasons and braise. Yum.
  5. I am so sad to hear that! I kind of figured her to sort of dwindle and wither without her companion like an old married couple sometimes do. Man, I just reread my post and that labor and skill line needs clearing up. From the sound of it Agas are very much similar to woodstove cooking, and the labor and skill I referred to meant that inate-sp?-ability people developed to woodstove cooking for how much wood you needed to build up the oven for a half hour from now, etc. The Agas need just as much skill, and if I were to have the opportunity, I would certainly try it. They are simply a symbol to most of us as something to want which is inappropriate, but "So what?".Now I have another pointless U.S. question-I understand SMEG is a brand- but I used to watch "Red Dwarf" and they used smeg as a cussword. Please illuminate.
  6. Richard, the Kobe beef bowl for under five bucks being endorsed by Kobe Bryant I gather?
  7. Robyn, we're calling the same plant two different names. Sorry, I'm an ag. science nerd, and I had to think about it. But after a Google I got the taxonomy,& so:Saw Palmetto-Sabal Serrulatum, also sabal serenoa. And boy am I glad. I was fixing to whup someone down in Ga. next time I saw him. So, we are both right( I think that's in the women's code book).
  8. Well, allright, as a fairly reasonable person, I'm gonna change that stuff this year...give up the handful of coins for a dark guy with some Scotch(can he be tall and handsome, too?) I also got to thinkin' about something-how long have we had green money? Seems that one would go that far, huh?
  9. I've watched consumed with jealousy Jennifer & Clarissa tossing so nonchalantly"Open the Aga, please, Clarissa," "But of course Jennifer," till you detailed them. They are a very rich folks version of a wood or coal stove but without the labor or skill involved, seems like. But God, how I miss Jennifer Patterson. What a character! Can any of you all update what is up with Clarissa?
  10. Some N/A's still use wood ashes to produce hominy. I used to have a nutrition chart of the minerals involved in hominy made in Hopi and Zuni fashion(they use a particular species of desert shrubby bush called saltbush in Hopi). Pile it in a big pile on a cleaned sand area. Burn for hours, piling on more, watch that fire you kids! Gather up carefully and store. Now, something else- that explanation of a cracker is weird and has no relation at all to what I learned growing up.
  11. Griff's in Fort Worth. And seeing's there are none here, Taco Cabana and Sonic. A #1 old fashioned with tater tots and pickle o's! AAArgh. There ain't any Frito Pie,either!!

    Bagged Teas

I too like Yogi teas.At the moment I've been drinking their Egyptian licorice tea, and one they call Detox, which has good flavor. For a readily availabletea I like Stash Earl Grey. Good and strong. But the majority of mine is from a neighborhood co-op that's got a very good variety of loose teas, and sell enough to be very fresh. While this topic is going, does anyone else like the flavor of black peppercorns in their chai? I've had chai mixes with and without, and I like black pepper in it.
  13. Wow I stand corrected. I wuz lied to, and I lapped it up like a dawg! What should I really look for?
  14. Can be used as a weapon... Apparently so, as you are no longer allowed to take them on airplanes in your carry-on luggage. OKAY, lady, just drop the fruitcake. I said, DROP THE FRUITCAKE!!!
  15. Flavored coffee to me means Crown Royal in coffee
  16. No,Trish, it's probably sacreligious, but out of five puddings, three are gifts, so I do them in one pound coffee cans. Then I make the hard sauce and jar it up too. I got to say that I kind of miss the steamroom effect the stovetop steaming gave my kitchen-pause-okay, I'm over it!
  17. Okayyy then- I knew about Cinton and Fromberg, but did not realize Montana is literally awash in testical festivals! Kinda creeps ya out. Ooh, I know about saw palmettos, and like them very much.
  18. Seems as if most of us are just ugly! For desert, I like to set it all out: desert, coffee, tea, iced tea (duck).
  19. When I first saw catfood I thought it was outta place. Then my smarter side realized that yep, cat food is always carefully in stock. We can go without something but those cats do not understand "Shut up, it's 4:30,". I had a basset hound who was even better at reproach than most cats. Piss her off, she got right in front of you and sat down with her back to you.
  20. Yep, and then there's the plain rehydrated, and the parched then ground. The instant and quick are enriched. Are we confused yet? But good point- like the steam ground cornmeal they sell at first Mondays- it's just dried dent corn.
  21. FLOURS
  22. Try a health food store or organic market. Some farmers markets carry meals and flowers. I think you'll find grits will adapt to any flavoring. As kids we ate "butterscotch grits" by melting a lump of butter with brown sugar. I still like it.
  23. Bet he had a lot of time to reflect on his folly the next day
  24. You bet. Pictures and all.
  25. Nah, it's just a big ole reason to party-duh- I guess that's what most modern ones are, aren't they? I want to go to the tomato fight!
