    Argan oil

Thanks so much. If my idol Paula Wolfert gives it an enthusiastic okay, I'll give it some special attention. Between Ms. Wolfert and Claudia Roden, I really enjoy the stories as well as their recipes.
  2. While this is none of my business, if you aren't prominently featured in those folkses will, or related against your better judgment, I'd cook them some good old-fashioned Ex-Lax cookies.
  3. Everytime I turn around, I'm running into mentions of argan oil. Although I looked it up on Alexa, I'd like to hear from someone who's tasted it. Is it a better hot oil or cold oil? What is it comparative to?
  4. Yeah, I don't know if it's what you'd consider fusion, either, but Laespi Gadeoro in Arlington, Texas is a "Mexican & Chinese Cuisine & Bakery" .
  5. Lane cake and Red Velvet. Can't have very much, but cooking and frosting takes a lot of the craves away.
  6. How about Marcus Samuelson (sic?). Would he qualify?
  7. I just caught my morning weather, and today's high will actually get to a toasty 24. Our usual temp is average 52, but this year has been anything but. Still snowing, though, which I actually like.
  8. Oh Pan, Montana not only gets cold, it has the WEIRDEST weather shifts I've ever seen! Last week we had three days of 75 to 80 degrees, now this, and they say our high tomorrow is 8 degrees for the little hobgoblins. If I still had kiddos, I reckon they would be masqing as an Alaskan native tribe if they wanted outside... you all up in Canada just sent us a great big ole cold front~when you need it back just let us know! I've not only been keeping warm, Pan, I've been reading everyone's Malay blog and spiriting myself to anywhere tropical-and with such scrumptious food.
  9. Yes, he had such an amusing way of stabbing appetisers with his fingernails. Kind of paranoid about wills, though. And it was always SUCH a hassle finding places whose dress codes included diapers. And talk about a cheapskate- he used to stick everybody with the bill!
  10. Sorry I was away for awhile, Pan. I'm located in (currently) hounddawg cold Billings, Montana. Tonight at 6:30 I took my little neighbor lady over some supper, and it was 8 degrees. Now it's snowing again. I've got to say that antelope has become one of my new favorite foods. The soup was so savory I was thrilled. I've also become a big fan of elk. I've found both of these game animals to have a complex texture that really stands alone. Have never had moose, but I'd sure try it. Also have never had bear, but that's a personal deal.
  11. I got inspired by 22 degrees and snow to put diced antelope, beef stock, hot Indian curry spice mix, small Yukon Golds, pumpkin cubes, onion, and slices of portobello and hickory-smoked bacon in my slow cooker. It's definitely smelling good, and we'll have it with popovers.
  12. Good thing that wasn't a question in a pop quiz! And I will herefore stay away from sharp objects like pencils & paper after midnight!
  13. This is an addendum to the previous post. After writing it I went to the website and the seed packets are 35 cents, not 30. That's what I get for using the postcard from my fridge. But then, I spent half the day on Alexa, under gardening catalogues, and I don't think I got through 1/3 of the first site-very fascinating content. There's such a plethora of new places that are more available to everyone now. I'm so thankful that everyone who's posted on the gardencentric threads has been so enthusiastic. Gardening has always been a big part of my life, but when I got too ill apprx. 21/2 years ago, I became unable to garden-such a bummer! I turned our inside space into a jungle, but starting lemons and avocadoes from seed just ain't the same. Anyway- I've already enjoyed the cooking, eating, pig pickin, chicken pluckin, everything, and now that folks are so enthusiastic about the garden principle of fine food, I am really looking forward to outdoors and fresh fruits of my own labor. Thanx ever so much eGullet people (incoming pun) You are the salt of the earth!
  14. When I read that statistic it occured that, indeed, not only is the unspecified time frame ambiguous, but think about the math- 175,000,000 divided by 1,800,000= isn't it like 970 bucks apiece? If my jackleg math's right, then they need to be leasing them to homeless folks as mobile homes.
  15. With my given name Mabel E., how well I remember that, as well as "Hey Mabel, Black Label," when I was a youngster!
  16. Other than wanting to try every single one listed (being a total souphead is cool), all I can think of not mentioned are albondigas, not just posole but anything with hominy, avgolemono, and the turkey soup I make with smoked turkey carcass from Texas-I horde turkey legs for this. My favorite at our Chinese joint is their hot and sour, too, and velvet chicken anything is absolutely fabulous (sweety, honey, darling)!
  17. There's this place I JUST GOTTA tell you about....it's Le Jardin du Gourmet in Vermont. This place is 5star, for real. They have the most incredible variety of herbs and veggies you have ever seen stateside. And they have this ingenious way to try out stuff. They sell a sample pack for 30 cents, so you can try something. Their website's at www.artisticgardens.com, and their catalogue is free. Enjoy!
  18. OH, MY GAWD! Now I'll have that song in my head all day! I reckon we are unable to take the suicidal cat, so in our version he just stands in the corner. Thanks for that...I'll never look at a bottle of Kikkoman the same way again.
  19. I got to warming up my gray matter, and Mr. Clean when he was a real guy that looked like a saucy pirate with bald head and earring (talk about ahead of your time!), "Stronger than DIRT", the white knight guy on the white horse, and like the meatball ad for Alka Seltzer, the newly-wed who fed hapless hubby the "marshmallowed meatloaf". Also , the Laurel & Hardy bit was from Babes In Toyland, a great old flick that was redone with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello in about the sixties, I guess.
  20. I think my favorite one is "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature," with a pissed-off goddess scattering all the little forest critters.
  21. Sigh, don't ask me how I managed to get this here when I was reading the cookie thread. A pox on phonecalls!
  22. My SO is of Scots descent and right now I'm baking his grandfather's shortbread recipe after much wheedling on his part after his dentistry the other day (it's the 20 minute's kneading that puts me off). But I started reading this and Walker's shortbread, Nillas (mostly in the nanna puddin), Archway Dutch Windmills, molasses, and gingersnaps....mmmm....but one I've recently found and like is a kosher macaroon that comes in a cardboard can-thing that's like a shoestring can. I got some of those on a whim and had them on a cold day by nuking them and having a cold glass of milk alongside. Now I'm gonna have to go get some today, I reckon.
  23. Up here in Montana, canning supplies can be gotten at Wally World, as well as eveywhere else (but what did I expect, huh?). Ditto nearly an identical list to yours with the exceptions of peach halves, peach pickles, pear pickles, rhubarb, chow chow that's so hot it's marvelous, garlic dill beans, huckleberries, corn relish, and salsa. It was real nasty to process stuff this year, because beside the drought & heat, we had the forest fires making the air so foul you had to have the house closed up, and a/c on.
  24. Bit O' Honey, Big Hunk, and Payday (sounds like a movie title) ! Been years but I could still get behind one of those.
  25. Ling, you are cuter than a speckled pup! My SO had dental surgery today, so I cooked him up some Super Ramen- ham, shredded green curry roast prk, scallions, asparagus, mushrooms, and egg drop. To kick up the seasons, I added some dark Oriental soy,hot chile flakes, and palm sugar vinegar. It tasted pretty good, and is economical when you've got leftovers. You have a source for bin bread-make some rustic bread salad! Cheaper than cheap, and Good! Use a good small cut of poultry, fish, beef, lamb or pork, cut in slices, shredded, cubed, or diced, then stretch to a full single course. Listen to mother Mabelline and replace a lot of your processed sugars with natural. And no sour tart things if you don't do YOUR studying, either!
