  1. Thank you for the shout-out! They're about a ten-minute drive from us. Even with a Spanish company now a 90% owner, we still think of Founders Brewery as local (which it is, although it's no longer officially a "craft brewery"). I have several bottles of KBS from four and five years ago -- it used to be a much more limited release -- stashed away downstairs. I'm looking forward to finding out how they've aged. Bell's Brewery, as mentioned by Dr. Teeth, is about an hour from here. I've yet to try their Black Note Stout.
  2. Find a grandma. Or, lacking that, an aunt. Ask if you could hang out in their kitchen for, say, three months.

    Magritte would be proud.
  5. I'm a native New Yorker (Brooklyn and Queens) who wound up in Michigan. Forty-some years later, there's a good bit of scarring on my tongue, but I still haven't completely gotten the hang of it. I wouldn't worry too much about that humility thing. I'd vote for the latter. When something has seemed arbitrary or irrational, I've often found there's a hidden agenda somewhere. May I ask which list it is? Is it Ian Froeb's? I see you're #11 there. Was it a return visit he was lacking? Anyhow, I'm glad you're still here on eG, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again this July.
  6. We're very fortunate to still have high-quality fish and seafood available near us, both fresh and frozen. The only place I've ever dealt with online is The Crab Place, and even then, it was their fresh jumbo lump crabmeat. Not cheap, but good. They have an excellent reputation, though, so I imagine their frozen stuff would be good, too.

    Poor guy.
  8. This would be a more interesting and useful post if you explained and, preferably, documented your assertions. Preferably not all at once, though.
  9. Just a quick update. Rob told me, via PM, that if all goes well, he hopes to be back open by early June. Even if it's early July, that bodes well for our eG gathering. Assuming museums etc. will also be open, Ms. Alex and I intend to be there.
  10. This is from our biggest Farmers Market. Fortunately, at least for social distancing, from November through April the market is open only on Saturdays from 10 to 1. I was there this past Saturday at about 12:30 and there still were customers, although it was quieter than I remember from previous years. We'll see what happens come May 2, when it's scheduled to be open three days per week from 8 to 2.

  12. Thank you. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that there'll be another winnowing in the near future. I love Vermont. Several decades ago, back before I-93 was completed, I came this close > < to moving to St Johnsbury.
  13. If I intend to reuse it, I strain. I don't like those nasty bits in other stuff I make.
  14. Wow. I also bake at 350 and mine are almost always done at 25-28 minutes. Must be the difference between US and Canadian minutes. Let me check. Yep, the exchange rate today is 1.43, so 25 x 1.43 = 35.75

Earlier today I bought a can of Cento white clam sauce. Later today, I noticed this on the side of the can: I had no idea one actually caught clams. I'm imagining a Discovery Channel series, "The Least Dangerous Catch." Oh, and of course we have to be warned:
  18. If anyone would like, I can check my local supermarket (walking distance) for yeast or other items and ship it to you. You can reimburse me via PayPal. ETA: Our nearest health food store has it on order.
  19. Almost 70 here, also don't feel (or look) like it. I still go out, but with the usual precautions. Yesterday = Fresh Thyme market, Sec. of State (required to renew enhanced license in person), Target order pickup, Goodwill donation, Pak Mail donation (they accept certain shipping materials), grocery store (Fever Tree tonic, LaCroix). Today I'll walk back over to the grocery store (lemons, limes, Rx pickup). We have enough wine and booze to last through this pandemic and probably the next one.

Not always. I think it adds an extra layer of funny knowing what the lunch is saying back.

  24. I see that Missouri hasn't (yet) closed restaurants and bars to in-house service. That has to be a relief for you. Are you doing anything differently in the restaurant because of the pandemic?
  25. Stopped at my local supermarket today to pick up just a few things. Lines like I've never seen, except at the "ten items or less" registers . The produce section was still pretty well stocked (including a full bin of fresh shiitakes, one of the items on my list) except for the potatoes, which were completely sold out save for a few forlorn fingerlings. There's an item I want to return to Costco, but do I dare even try?
