  1. Maybe Bravo and FTV could collaborate on a new late-night special: "Topless Chef".
  2. I would love to see a show where she pairs up with Andrew Zimmern.
  3. Even though I had been through Mitsuwa market a number of times and was familiar with a number of products, it was still very instructional to have someone familiar with Japanese language, produce and products describe names, uses, cooking tips for any number of unfamiliar items, including some of the "fast food" offerings. We ended the tour with an excellent lunch at the restaurant just in back of Mitsuwa, whose name escapes me. We were on the second floor in a private room with a picture window overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Discussed Japanese foods, customs, courtesy, etc.

Judith- Buona fortuna e tanti auguri! Am awaiting a raffle this weekend at a local food/wine benefit for a trip for four with airfare to a villa in Umbria. If we win, we will bring more friends-they'll have to buy their own plane tickets, but if so, one of first stops will be Erba Luna! Palazzo Santi Terzi Not sure how far that is from you.
  5. I've done a Chinatown tour and a Mitsuwa market tour in NJ with New School. As many times as I've been to those places, having someone who really knows the territory, the products and the language was invaluable. I've also done an Arthur Avenue tour through ICE, which was excellent-given by a native of Sicily who moved to the Bronx as a child and who grew up in that neighborhood. I probably could have used all the info gleaned from eGullet for a self-guide to the area, since I was unfamiliar with the area, but it still wouldn't have been the same as going with her. ICE has a number of other tours I'd like to take as well.
  6. Review of Cantina in Metroland: Emphasis on quality, not just portion size. Metroland review
  7. Review from the Albany Times-Union: Cantina review
  8. I don't know if this has been reported elsewhere on eGullet, but he's been nominated for an Emmy- the Beirut episode: Bourdain nominated for Emmy

    Grazie, Pontormo!
  10. One of the problems I encountered reading the book was understanding some of the slang expressions. Here's a helpful site: British slang dictionary

Tanti auguri! Where exactly in Umbria is it located?
  12. Has anyone seen, read, used any recipes from Father Giuseppe Orsini's "Italian Baking Secrets"? I've just started reading the book, but haven't made anything from it- was curious about other's opinions, experiences.
  13. I was recently looking at some opinions of a bread baking book on Amazon. The reviewer was highly critical of the book not containing photos or drawings. Frankly, I thought they might be nice (do you really need to see a photo of biscotti?)- but not necessary; esp. if it would add significantly to the price of the book. So it depends what the book is about and how important it is to visualize the end results.
  14. Peterson, Rick Stein. Just read Jasper White's "Summer Shack"- lots of great basic recipes. As an aside, got to eat at his Summer Shack restaurant while at Mohegan Sun. Seems to be one of the few multi-location places that work- all his places are in relative close proximity in New England and he actually goes there a cooks at each of his restaurants. Hard to do when you've got places in NY, Las Vegas, etc.
  15. Jacques is still my favorite teacher. I miss Mario's professorial style on "Molto". I've found Lidia Bastianich to be a decent teacher. Michael Chiarello as well.
  16. Agree with the above- I'd just as soon have Bubbe's or Ba Tampte. The only thing worth saving might be the location-if you're pregnant- since they're so close to Il Laboratorio del Gelato!
  17. I phoned the number listed for Paradiso in the Saratoga phone book. A recording said they will be operating out of the Villa Balsamo this season. An informal get-together is a good possibility, depending on when. Just post some possible times and hopefully it will work out.
  18. Mouzon House can be a little tricky to find. It's at the end of the parking lot below where the City Center/Saratoga Hotel is located. Near where they hold the Farmer's Market. Nice place-great food. If you get to either One Caroline or Mouzon (same ownership) - you might try to go on a night when their daughter- Sarah Pedinotti and her group are playing- great up and coming jazz singer. I believe Paradiso has been closed for some time now. Max will likely not be open until after the summer. A couple of Indian friends went recently to Karavalli- they enjoyed it, but thought that the food had, in general, been made a little more rich than to what Indians might prefer, probably for American tastes. They also said, that although they try to represent many styles of regional cuisine- they probably do southern Indian the best. I haven't been, but other (American) friends enjoyed it very much.
  19. I saw the preview last night before we saw "Ratatouille". I don't like to make judgements based just on previews, and I realize that No Reservations appears to be about relationships, a family situation, etc., but ironically the Rat movie appeared to be way more realistic about the world of restaurant cooking that No Reservations, but judgement will be reserved. Anybody remember "Spanglish"? Hardly realistic, but that's not Hollywood. By the way, when I saw the title- No Reservations- I was hoping it would have been a movie featuring Tony Bourdain. Oh well.
  20. Saw it last night. Was a delight. I have a number of "rat" relatives-indiscriminate eaters who would eat the human equivalent of the garbage the other rats ate. Been a hard, but sometimes satisfying journey trying to educate their palates without coming off as elitist or a food snob-just like Remy. Someone asked if they saw any other chef names in the credits- saw a "Thanks" in the list to Tony Bourdain. May have been some other names- too many names, credits to take in at one time.
  21. I can't comment on the legal questions involved in this case, but what about the moral/ethical issues of copy-catting one's restaurant design/menu/dishes? Is it a sincere form of flattery or stealing? I've been in restaurants where I've recognized some dishes, then learned the new chef used to be a sous chef at the restaurant where I first had such dishes. Haven't had the opportunity to ask the original chef/owner how they felt about their dishes/recipes being appropriated as such. Could set some precedents. Certainly Pearl doesn't need the PR.
  22. Just came back from a short trip/conference. Places we got to try: Metropol for Cuban/Puerto Rican; El Jibarito in Old San Juan-very local; Casa Dante & Mi Casita in the Carolina area-good mofongo, asopao; Yamato in El San Juan where we were staying-excelllent young itamae-san at the sushi bar-made great suggestions-very talented-a very different experience apparently than those sitting at the hibachi tables. Got to eat at a family-run place on a tour to the rainforest. Everything deep-fried- not too healthy, but tasty- esp. the bacalaitos! Anxious to return (this was our first time in Puerto Rico)- would like to range further and have further cultural/culinary adventures.
  23. If you go to Capriccio, consider trying the eggplant with four cheeses; definitely not your usual eggplant parm. Since your girlfriend is at RPI, try to get to the Troy Farmers Market on Saturday mornings-it's down by the river by the municipal dock-just south of the Route 7 bridge. Go see Mike Gordon at Thunder Mountain Curry- pretty amazing Indian/Thai food. He's a CIA grad and has lived/studied/cooked in Asia and Africa. Some Indian & Pakistani students & their families have been initially skeptical about this American guy cooking "their" food, but once they try it, they've been blown away. Lots of other great vendors as well-try Mrs. London's bread/pastries.
  24. Check out "Sweet Sicily" by Victoria Granof.
  25. Grazie mille! I looked up Castro on both Mapquest and Google Earth. Looks like it is close to the Adriatic coast, roughly 10 miles south of Otranto, in Lecce province. Castro map
