Where can I get the best bang for the buck in terms of Parmigiano Reggiano in the boroughs? I am also interested in getting fresh herbs like whole Sage leaves and oregano. I thought about going to the Green Market at USQ/14th to look for herb plants.

Any advice would be welcome?

Teitel Bros. on Arthur Avenue has the best price I know of on good Reggiano. I buy a few pounds there a couple of times a year.

Once early spring rolls around, you'll be able to buy nice herb plants at the greenmarket for $4 - $6 each. I bought oregano, marjoram, rosemary, thyme and tarragon last year and transplanted them into nice 6" pots immediately. On a sunny window sill in my kitchen and they've all, except the tarragon, lasted through the winter and are ready to start growing again come spring!!

I second Teitel Brothers. It is usually $5-6 per pound cheaper than anywhere else. Good quality also. Just beware, if you ask for a pound and a half, your piece will be 2 pounds and so forth. Also very good for other Italian basics, olives, everyday olive oil, canned tomatoes, etc.

Does Teitel Bros. have good deals on imported canned San Marzano tomatoes?
