Hello all,

As a transplanted Philadelphian, one of the things I sought out was whether a worthy Cheesteak (notice I used a capital C) in the bigh apple. I tried three places, and whould love to hear feedback from other members.

The first place I tried was Philly Slim's at 789 9th Ave. The bread (always a deal-breaker in the philly cheesteak world) was acceptable, but the steak was heavily seasoned; something that is just not done. It tasted more like a tips sandwhich from boston, then a philly cheesesteak. Just not the authentic experience I was seeking.

The next place I tried was Carl's at 507 3rd Ave. Carl's gave a pretty good showing. It was not as good as Pat's, Geno's, or Jim's, but it was close enough to cover a cheesesteak fix.

The third place I went to was 90 Miles to Philly at 94 3rd Ave (between 12th and 13th sts.) I must admit that this was the real deal. The bread was spot-on, the onlions cooked right, and the steak was cooked like you would find at Geno's. The cheesefires were perfect; they used what I call waffle-cut fries, whose added surface-area is the perfect cheese whiz delivery system. They glop on the cheesewhiz right on top in an amount I have only seen in Philly. This is definately the place I would recommend for a genuine Philly Cheesesteak experience.

Since I am a recent transplant to the area, I would love to hear members give me feedback on the places I covered here, or other places I should try. Thanks.

It was not as good as Pat's, Geno's,

Pats and Genos in Philadelphia are for tourists, they arent anywhere near the best steaks in philly.

I would give up on cheesesteaks in NY, had a few, all pretty lame except for tony lukes at the old location. It's like trying to find a good bagel in philly.....

Interesting. All I know is that three generations of my family have gone to Pat's, as have many of other families I know, so if that makes us toursits.....Now, it is true that the place has changed in the 30+ years I have gone there, and have become somewhat user-friendly (originally, if you hesitated ordering for a second, you were yelled at "what are you, paralyzed!") To be honest, we all thought that Genos was the tourist joint, for it had inside seating; at Pat's you had to deal with the elements, while you enjoyed your little piece of perfection....

Tony Lukes was where we went for roast pork sandwiches, not cheesesteaks. I was still looking forward to seeing how the NYC operation was, but they were under renovation, and will be for another week at least.

I am a tourist.. Being that I drive down to Philly once every couple of months.. I love Pat's and have yet to go to a better Cheesteak Place.. I think Geno's is whack. I went to Tony Luke's in NYC and dont think it made the transfer well at all.. I have been to most of the Cheesesteak places in Manhattan.. Philly Slims is pretty good.. Woogies for me is my favorite. Beer to.

Thanks for the Woogies suggestion: I will try them this week. I feel that 90 Miles to Philly was much better then Philly Slims, but it is always a matter of personal taste when it comes to these things. Thank you....
