Results from a recent study by Constellation Brands:

Results

Constellation's research categorized consumers this way:

Enthusiast: 12 percent (60 percent female; average age 46).

Image seeker: 20 percent (64 percent male; average age 35).

Savvy shopper: 15 percent (57 percent female; average age 49).

Traditionalist: 16 percent (68 percent female; average age 50).

Satisfied sipper: 14 percent (74 percent female; average age 52).

Overwhelmed: 23 percent (70 percent female; average age 44).

Notice this, however:

From November 2004 to the beginning of this year, Copernicus Marketing Consulting and Research Inc. — on Constellation's behalf — conducted more than 3,500 online interviews with U.S. consumers. The study loosely defined "premium wine drinker" as anyone who bought wine priced at $5 or higher in the last three months.

Soo . . . that could be rephrased as "drinkers of Constellation Brands' premium wines?"

Here's a link to the Adobe Acrobat version of the report.
