Florence, Oregon Eats

Recommended Posts

I'm packing up the car and taking a friend to Florence to visit, and stay with her Mom for a few days at the end of the month. When we do this, we usually shop in Seattle and tote coolers of good food with us, but due to time constraints, it's not going to happen this time.

I will, however, as a good guest, be cooking dinner one night, and taking Mom out to a couple of meals. The Fred Meyer is a relatively decent store, so the cooking won't be too hard, but I don't know anything about the restaurants in Florence - other than that place on the river where I was served an old, dry crab and grey nuked potato... help?

“"When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"

"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"

"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully.

"It's the same thing," he said.”

I haven't been to Florence for a few years, but given the state of Oregon's economy, the season (not summer, which means tourist-driven businesses aren't happening), and the dismal state of most Oregon coastal dining, don't expect much. You should still be able to find fresh crab, but stick with more humble offerings at any local eateries.

of course, I may be completely wrong....

Just got back from the Oregon Coast. I will add that the dining is pretty dismal there.

We stayed at the Driftwood Shores and had dinner there one night. Don't bother. Food was mediocre and service was worse. On the second night we ate at the Firehouse Restaurant in Old Town. Food was acceptable, and so was the service. The place is decorated with shirts from different fire houses around the country. My husband really liked their ribs. I guess my meal was just Ok cause I can't remember what I had.

Yep... this is why we usually haul our own food...

I did take everyone out to Driftwood Shores one time for dinner... just horrifying. Piles of fried crap and really bad wine.

Well, I guess I'll hope for the Live Crab signs to be out in Depoe Bay, and just deal with the rest as it comes. It's only for a few days, anyway...

Lala,

sorry for being this late in responding but we just arrived back home tonight from our trip to the redwoods having left the day you posted your question. We stayed in Florence one night on our way back. Ate at "C" next door to Mo's on the waterfront. Al, my husband, had a grilled 3 fish plate-snapper, salmon and halibut. Enjoyed it with the snapper being just OK. I had the "Fisherman's Net" prepared in a wine broth. Really no flavor at all. Definitely, needed some flavor help desperately. The calamari appertizer we had (prepared fried) was absolutely outstanding. Wish I had ordered a double of this for dinner and it would have been less expensive. Overall, dinner was overpriced. Since we were only there one night I have no other suggestions in that area.

The best meal we had in that general area was in Lincoln City where we ate at Dory Cove on Logan St. It is at the end of the street-called Land's End-and was absolutely a great dinner and very reasonably priced.

On our way to the redwoods we had dinner in Portland at the clarkelewis. Really great dinner at the "family table" with the chef choosing our courses. Food was outstanding. Wish it wasn't quite so far for a return trip.

Sorry not better help on your Florence question. Kay
