nice dinner near Glen Rock

My wife and I want to go out for dinner on Saturday for our annivesary and we're looking for a restaurant not terribly far from Glen Rock/Ridgewood. We've done Rocca, we've done Village Green...past those we don't know the places to hit. No real parameters in terms of cuisine, or level of formality, or the cost. But we are hoping for a somewhat nice dinner.

How far would American Grill be from us? Is that our best bet?

Thanks for your help

-Dave

Zarole or Latour in Ridgewood are excellent destination choices; Ridgewood is only 5 minutes from Glen Rock.

Zarole

20 E Ridgewood Avenue

201-670-5701

Latour

6 East Ridgewood Avenue

201-445-5056

We have discussed these places extensively in the past. Good food, great ambience at each of these. Terrific special occasion choices.

Yeah...we thought about Zarole, but they can't take us. Is Latour the one right around the corner from A&B Bakery, by the train station

Yes, it's right by the RR-- nice French, probably the best Frisee salad I've ever had-- a work of art!!

(Can't believe Zarole is booked already!)

Zarole's not booked up, but they can't take us at a time that fits our schedule.

Chef D--

An American Grill is a FINE establishment, and if you're willing to drive the 45 minutes, many of us can highly recommend it!!! Directionally, you'd have to take the GSP to Rt 80 to 287 to Rt 10--that's the most direct route. It's really not a horrible ride, and the food/drink will certainly be worth it! Depends on how much your babysitter charges, I suppose...

Other ideas: Fascino (BYO) in Montclair (call if there isn't a table free on OpenTable), or (GASP) The Jefferson in Hoboken. Both are also worth the (shorter) trip!!

Ninety Grand in Englewood.

I respectfully disagree, Rosie... 90 Grand is NOT about food-- it's about the car you came in (Lincoln or Caddy) your cuff links, and who you had lunch with. A place to tell your colleagues that you went to. Same M.O. as his former place on 9W in Englewood Cliffs. Not a restaurant for people who really care about food. Stick with Latour or take a journey to American Grill.

Thanks for all the recomendations....I think we're going to try the Jefferson. I'm fairly confident that it will be an outstanding expererience - we've never yet been steered wrong by an eG suggestion.

For the record we drive an old Toyota and Lowell doesn't have a shirt that needs cuff links!

My report on my dinner at Ninety Grand is here:

Didn't end up going to the jefferson....our son was sick so we opted to stay closer to home. We actually ended up being able to walk-in at Zarrole at about 8, so i guess it all worked out.

We were fairly impressed with Zarole. It's the kind of place that I think is able to stand out because it's not in NYC....if it were, there would be a dozen other plcaes like it with-in 10 blocks. But I don't mean for that to detract from it's accomplishments...I thought my foie/scallop dish (with some kind of vanilla syrup or something like that) and my veal chop were excellent. My wife had a goat cheese "napolean" and grouper, if I remember correctly. Perhaps that's it....I can't really remember the precise details, just a week and a half later. It was very good, but not overwhelmingly memorable.
