Where to go in the West Island

Hello,

With great trepidation I'm moving west and feel out of place. I need to find great places for the essentials. I used to live in NDG and would easily go to the"city" for essentials in fruit, bread, cheese, meat etc.

Can anyone give me a heads up where I can find comparable merchants? I'm not against going east, its just that when I feel the need for a quick stop to for an indulgance, I would prefer the convenience of buying in the area.

thanks,

Max.

It's been 4 years since we moved to WI from Montreal and this info may be outdated but...

We used to live in Beaconsfield and the Metro had a pretty good supply of basics.

I'd go to Fruiterie 440 on Sources for fruits, veg, cheese and sausages.

Marche' Adonis further down the road was where I picked up middle eastern ingredients, plus I love the staff!

I found Sources also had a great Asian store as well as Greek and Indian. Just keep driving.

As I said, things may have changed since we moved so someone who still lives there may be a better guide as I'm sure new stores have opened.

We lived in NDG too before migrating West, I wonder if NDG has become the springboard to suburbia? Happy Hunting!

If only Jack Nicholson could have narrated my dinner, it would have been perfect.

try shopping at Mourelatos (on St.John's blvd. and Pierrefond Blvd.), very aggressive in prices and they have just about everything. For pastries I love Gascon (St.Johns blvd. and brunswick) I have lived in the WI for 15 years and love it, if you explore St. Johns blvd, and Blvd des Sources you will discover just about everything on your own.

Good luck!

The renowed Da Emma restaurant in old montreal, has a family member in the west island. Da Armando (emma's brother) is located on gouing boul. just south of St-Charles. It is the best Italian food in the west island, (or i should say the only authentic Italian food in the west-island) , avoid taking a la carte menu as some dishes are made for the quebec market, if you choose the chefs suggestions you will eat as if you were in Rome. Abbacchio, cervella ai capperi , polpettoni etc

before i moved to mtl, i lived in kirkland and ile perrot for about 15 years.

marché de l'ouest is the only ting that is comparable to amarket in mtl... meat, fish, fruits, oils, vinagers, patisserie... it's all there. right off of sources, behind the civic center. not that big but still... you're in the suburbs.

if you want ti have great fajitas, go to jack astors on sources, you wont be disappointed for i have worked there fir 3 years about 10 years ago... but there still the best i have had.

have fun in suberbia!

It's funny, I wrote this about 6 months ago and I'm still a little lost (or delusioned). I've slowly discovered all those places and a few more. The fantastic amount of free parking is great since everything is so far away from each other (still getting used to all the driving as walking along overpasses is a little hair-raising). While Marche de L'Ouest is good, it pales (although the cheese place is very good and the butcher is okay). Adonis/Mourelatos/440 is absolutely great.

I go to Maiko to think I'm still downtown. Nice atmosphere, and good Sushi for the WI. There are some decent eats, but terraces besides major thoroughfares just isn't right. Da Armando sounds interesting, thanks for the tip.

Even with all my complaining, the country life is agreeing with me. Those long drives through traffic to work is non-existant and that's worth the price of admission alone. More space and quiet nights with beautiful sky-views add to the ambience.

I still find myself going to JT and Atwater markets. I sip overpriced lattes in interesting cafes in town. I buy bagels in the plateau, I eat ice-cream from B.Boquet ( I can't bring myself to buy the pints) and go for nice long walks on Mount Royal.

And I still tell myself that the drive from Beaconsfield to Beaubien isn't that much.

Maybe the summer will bring some more great finds. Thanks for all the tips.

PS: Does anyone else think that MB&Co at Fairview is just bad taste/scandalous?
