(from shikhye thread...)

howondang, a ddeok (rice cake) house sells some drinks on the side. from left to right, shikhye (식혜) for $1.99, omija tea (오미자차) for $3.99 and sujeonggwa (수정과) for $1.99. i was happy to see these for sale, but wished that more places sold korean flavoured drinks in this manner. that omija cha had better be some awesome tea for $4!

<center><img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/040912howondang.jpg"></center>

Hmm, I would think it would be the other way around, that omija tea was cheaper, but now that you mention it, it usually is a little more expensive than other teas, though sujonghwa and shikhye, being labor intensiveish, at least more than omijah where you just stick a bunch of the berries into your cup or whatever and then pour water over them, I would think would be more expensive than omija.  Weird.

The only other reason why omija would be that much more expensive is because they're from Cheju Island, that Mt Halla omija tea.  I know about this because when we were on Cheju Island a couple of years back, I had to endure a sales pitch for the stuff during our tour.

In L.A., you can get the dried omija berries for about $5 for a big bag at at least some Chinese apothecaries.  Unfortunately, I don't know the Chinese name.

below, some pics of gohyang (hometown) brand instant omijacha. usd$3.99 for 20 servings. pouring powder into mugs is always a let down compared to brewing fruits and leaves, but at 20 cents a cup, you get over it. white cup for reference. the color in the photo is pretty close to what i see in real life (that cup in the box must be of cranberry juice, or of omija concentrate!). ive only ever had instant omijacha. from the box, this tea tastes overwhelmingly sweet with some tartness to it. what happened to the other three flavours, i do not know...

I haven't had omija tea in years, but I do know that the color in the picture matches what I've had, a dark pink. Actually, to me it tastes like fruit punch with a sort of cranberry kick.

I love cold Dinty Moore beef stew. It is like dog food! And I am like a dog.

not exactly a beverage, but rather porridge, which i had not seen in previous walkbys... sesame porridge. i always feel guilty when i think about sesame porridge. when i was sick, my mom would make some by hand and i used to not like the flavour, so i always struggled to finish a bowl. i would eat a third or even less and claim i felt too sick to finish. spoiled brat!!! how i wish i could punish my former self... $3.00 for some amount (sorry!). maybe two servings worth? a good guess i think!

the name of this drink doesnt translate very well into american english. its called "doo doo", which means "bean bean". their target is korean folks, but it still is a funny name to me.

its a beverage made from black beans. bought one and i cant say anything really good about it. there is a bean flavour, but its ruined by way too much sugar.. the labelling does say that it is for children. there is another version, i guess it should be less sweet, but i dont know for sure. it has the same name and comes in large liter bottles.

the howondang logo features a serious portrait...  although it doesnt really look like her, it does remind me of my mom and i feel slightly guilty and at the same time comforted by it...  i bet thats how a lot of people must feel, no?

<center><img src="http://www.rawbw.com/~coconut/eg/04/041005logo.jpg"></center>

Korean moms and guilt? This is not an uncommon combination.

I've never been to howondang. Where is it? I think I'll go buy some stuff for my mom there to make her happy only to have her scold me that I spent too much money on things she can buy in Korea for better quality and better prices. But she'll be happy, after she's made me feel bad...

It's in the Galleria Mall, both the LA and Northridge ones. Kind of pricey, I think, but maybe that's just my mother's influence, hehe.

--FWIW my mom doesn't look like that pic. She's more of a party person and always ready to spend my money on travel and stuff. I wish I was more like her sometimes. And she can't scold me because I get outrageous travel deals that she can't touch ($200 round trip ticket on British Air, Heathrow to LAX, for starters, $800 trip for 2 to Oahu including air, hotel, transfers, tax) Bwahaha.

I don't think anyone's mom looks like that anymore.

I do remember though that I went back to Korea in 77-78 for the first time alot of Korean women as young as 50 were still wearing hanbok and had their hair done in a chignon. These days it's a rare sight unless it's a special occassion/holiday.

i believe all the teas can be mixed hot or cold. and of course, better tasting tea can be had by mixing regular tea with a squeeze of lemon. all boxes also go for $4-$5 usd for around 20 servings.

Where can I get omiji berries in States? I would love to brew a batch of Omiji Ale!

Leave the gun, take the canoli

I got my omija berries from a tiny Korean-run dietary supplement shop, whose owners custom blended some combinations of grains, herbs, and chinese medicine to turn into a drink. It wasn't cheap; I think the berries cost about $25 for about 400 grams. I'm guessing you won't need much for a beer project, though.

The packaging on the omija photo is about the same style, although a different branding, as the one I got. The label on this photo seems to say "Omija yeolmae" but I think mine just said omija-cha, even though they were whole berries.

Do you think you will replace the hops with omija or just add the omija to the basic ale flavor?

i havent had many instant teas lately, but with the sudden cold snap in these parts, i went out and got some.

the developers are still at it, making the instant tea market better and better.

bought three boxes of daechucha (date/jujube tea) from three diff companies. all have extra stuff thrown in like pine nuts and shit.

am enjoying a cup now. a little on the sweet side. not bad for instant tho. feels good. this is (my favourite instant brand) wonplus' "jin dae chu cha" (or "real date tea"). has bits of dates and chopped peanuts. the peanuts are better than i would have expected.

why didnt they do this before? maybe they did and i never noticed?

there is nothing better than ice cold home made shikhye. Although the crap in the cans will suffice for now....seeing as how I don't know how ot make the stuff. That black bean drink is delicious, its like a more nuttier soy milk.

I have 3 different kind of cereal powders that I mix into soy milk or milk, but I don't know the names because I don't have the original packaging. Does anyone else drink cereal powders? How do you get the powder to not sink to the bottom, what a pain
