A brief review of recent fried potato experiences:

-La Terrasse's worst steak fries I've had in a very long time. Some of the wedges weren't cooked all the way through, dark colored & crappy tasting. What happened to the regular fries w/ fried leeks? Those were terrific and worth $4. aaagh.

+cute pinky long, very regularly cut teeny matchstick fries at Grace Tavern. Aesthetically pleasing and tasty; the bourbon mayo makes them even better.

-Morning Glory Diner home fries: slightly below average, uncrispy

+Sabrina's home fries: still deep fried, still crispy on the outside and tender already cooked on the inside, $1.50

+Good Dog's fries: fresh cut 1/2 regular peel on, 1/2 sweet potato. The sweet potato ones tend to get a little extra dark with that caramelized burnt sugar taste to go with the salt & fat. What's not to get addicted to? Just the part where they're not as crispy as plain potato. $4 for enough for you & 2 hungry drunk friends.

+Maoz felafel's fries: feels like a ripoff at $2 considering it's just a little cone of rectangular steak cut evenly golden fries and you could get a gigantico slice of Lorenzo's across the street but they were really good and I'd get them again

?Jone's potato pancakes. I hear they're very crispy.

+Standard Tap's fries: they were good enough that we ordered two more baskets sequentially.

-Nodding Head's fries: the most recent time that I was there the fries seemed like they were encrusted for extra crunch. Not really my thing.

excellent topic, katbert, especially as i've been experimenting recently to try and make fries the way i like them at home.

recent experiences:

--ten stone CAN have great fries; as good as any in town. sometimes they're seriously oversalted, though. last time i was there, last month, they weren't as great as they were the several times before.

--black sheep's fries aren't so good. however, they do make an excellent burger.

Oh a topic gift from heaven.

Lately, Ive had fabulous fries at:

Chickie & Pete's, Robbins and Frankford, just around the corner from the fabulous Grey Lodge Pub.. two words: Crab Fries!

Curran's Irish Pub, 7201 Old State Rd. really great handcut beauties, with awesome wings (get the Cajun Wings) and big charcoal burgers to accompany;

Great American Diner, Street Rd, Bensalem, more great handcut fries served with above average diner food and brick oven pizza;

Ten Stone's (21st and South) fries, to me, have always been spectacular, and not oversalted when Ive ever had them (but that may explain my high blood pressure, now that I think of it.....)

I also still have a soft spot for the seasoned fries at Rocco's Hoagies in the Bellevue Food court; they're tweaked "crab fries", but theyre done very nicely.

you know, it makes sense about ten stone's fries being good (they also have excellent burgers), considering that the place is run by the roosevelt's folks. and they, after all, were the inventors of the recession special back in 1991 or so, which provided me with some of the best food of my college tenure.

(i didn't eat very well in college, but that aside, good bar food is good bar food)

rich, you're right about chickie's and pete's, too.

i'm just consistently surprised that so many places make bad fries. i really am.

[shameless shill] The frites at Rouge are pretty damned tasty. I eat them often enough and should know. And they come with Sambal mayonnaise for dipping. What could be bad? [/shameless shill]

The Sweet Potato fries at Sabrina's leave something to be desired, substance...they are mostly crispy-ness...Although in my naif opinion, a bad sweet potato fry beats a regular fry any day...
