Closed for Renovations

Joining Jerry's Osteria in Tenafly on the "Closed for Renovations" list is the long-established Saints Café on Teaneck Road in Teaneck. I think this place had a face lift about 6-7 years ago. Some have said that the food was decent.

Why do restaurants invariably say "Closed for Renovations" when they never intend to open again-- this in apparently the case here. Can't they either say nothing or just say "Closed"?

I remember the last incarnation of the Railroad Café in Englewood in that nice historic RR Station on the park (Don't remember what name it had)-- we went there and had a terrific Sunday brunch, the place was quite nice inside as well.

When we went back a month later, they had a sign "closed for renovations". After being closed for 6 months, it was purchased by Tony Bennett (the singer) and is now used for his sound studios!!

It should probably say, "Closed for refinancing" That's usually what happens...

I think it's a psycological thing. If by some chance they do manage to secure some more money, they would have to build up business all over again. Using "Closed for renovations" means they are trying to keep themselves in your standard rotation of restaurants, at least psychologically.

Screw it. It's a Butterball.

I remember many of us panicked when the Mexican place in Bogota closed for renovations. They actually renovated and reopened. So, it can happen.

Meanwhile, I called Johnny (Gianni?) over at the Diner/Felice in Oradell, who happens to also own Saint's Cafe in Teaneck (and Le Jardin in Edgewater). He says they are actually renovating and he plans to reopen in "a couple-three months."

I also called over to Jerry's Gourmet in Englewood and no one there knows if Jerry's Osteria in Tenafly is going to reopen.

right. similar to when your neighbor gets foreclosed on, he's "moving", rather than "destitute".

Yes, but your neighbor has to face you for a while--- the restaurant owner could be thousands of miles away and never see any of the customers again...

How about a new sign--"May or may not reopen one of these days."

you're missing the point. every bone in the neighbor's body wants to believe that he's just moving on as this particular situation wasn't working out. not to mention that it doesn't matter if you'll actually *see* the owner. you most likefly know who he is, he might live in town, etc etc.

obviously we all agree that it's somewhat ambiguous to post "closed for renovations". but i don't think that the people who post those signs are necessarily concerned with how you're feeling, but rather how they're feeling, what with losing their business/hobby/passion/means of income and all.

the answers, of course, lie within you.

It's my understanding that the sign store was out of signs that said Closed Due to Uneven Cash Flows and the Vagaries of the Economic Climate and they were having a sale on Closed for Renovation signs.

[God I'm booored]

What ever happened to Mediterraneo which became Sol’e Trattoria in Totowa, NJ?

The sign still says "CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS"

The owners are currently consulting with Tommy to find out what the sign really means!!

well this particular owner joined a cult and ran off to arizona. you see, these signs can really mean a lot. it's hard to say.

note: i don't know if this owner joined a cult, not that there's anything wrong with this.

Here's a twist. Last week or so the Newport Pancake House was demolished. There was no hint of the impending annihilation. I had eaten there a few weeks prior. I figured an irate diner took his bulldozer and got even, or something like that. After all, the service can be on the slow side. Then I read that the owners are building a new diner from scratch on the same property. Go figure. It would've killed them to post a sign or something?
