  1. Sneakeater

    Cascazilla

At RUB in New York City last night, I had a beer (well, an ale, actually) that was new to me: Cascazilla, a red ale from Ithaca, New York. I'm so excited about it that I wanted post a note here. The barmaid described this ale as "hoppy". That was an understatement. This was the first ale I've ever thought to describe as "perfumed". Lots of citrusy overtones. If you like hops, you'll love this. I'm told it's only available from November through March. So act fast, or get ready to wait.
  2. In the next 2 weeks the 10th Anniversary Golden Age of Beer in Philadelphia Tours will be taking place, and today I got the word that Yards Brewing Co. will be making a beer to celebrate our anniversary! The Golden Age of Beer 10th Anniversary Ale will be a Simcoe-hopped pale ale, full of grapefruit and tangerine and floral notes and aromas, with a big hop bite and a silken finish, according to Tom Kehoe, founder/brewmaster. The beer, for those in the Philadelphia area, will be served at stops along the Tours, from March 18 through March 25, the two dates of the Golden Age of Beer tours. The pubs pouring our special beer are scheduled to be: Monk's Cafe McGillin's Olde Ale House McMenamin's Tavern The Standard Tap The Grey Lodge and the Yards Brewery, when we visit. I'd like to say that I'm speechless, but I just wrote the above. But it still feels pretty cool.
  3. First of all- thanks to Susan Burgess aka Susan in FL for suggesting doing this thread as a journal, giving some pointers to get started, and investigating some pesky issues in regards to posting that may come up. So here's the readers digest version of my Rip Van Winkle story: I got started homebrewing in 1991 via the prodding of some friends. My dad and I were already into home winemaking so I really didn't need to buy very much new equipment, and coincidentally some friends had just purchased a bar and gave me a bunch of old soda kegs that they found in the cellar. All I really needed was a CO2 tank and regulator and I was good to go. My first few batches were done in an enamel lobster pot on the stove and fermented in a 6 gallon Poland Spring water jug that I got from work. You really can go the low-tech route and make some really good beer- which is where I find myself right now. It wasn't long before I was doing all grain, decoction mash brews and that's sort of where I left it in '97. My lifestyle now is a heck of a lot different than it was then and I just don't have the weekends to dedicate to that sort of thing. But, for whatever reason (mostly from participating in the homebrewing thread here, actually- so thanks, folks) I have gotten the bug again. The thing is- it's going to have to be done at night, between 8 and 11 pm, and on a stovetop (the 'brewing' part, that is). My plan here is to document the whole shebang- from un-mothballing all the old stuff to purchasing my ingredients to brewing to packaging to serving. I'll also post my thought process, in regards to recipes, procedures and God only knows what else, along the way. The first beer will be all extract and, depending on how that goes, I may go into partial mash recipes. Questions and comments are welcome and encouraged. I don't think I will actually be brewing anything for a week or two, but I do have a lot of work to do and some phonecalls to make during that time. See ya soon. Cheers!

    Taddy Porter

I recently had Taddy Porter for the first time. Why does the first sip taste vinegary? After that it was fine. Is it supposed work like that or was something wrong with it?
  7. I am pleased to post this reminder that the current course offering of the eGullet Culinary Institute (eGCI) is going on now, and it's about beer! Chris Holst, aka cdh, is the eGCI Instructor for the course, Homebrewing for the Absolute Beginner. The course consists of four classes. The first class was posted yesterday, and each will be spaced two weeks apart. It's a wonderful opportunity to "brew along" with a skilled and knowledgeble homebrewer. Read, and follow along here, and post questions and discussion here. Cheers, and enjoy!

    Hoppy Brew Years Eve

Celebrate Brew Years Eve We'll be celebrating with a growler of Blind Pig from Russian River Brewing. What are you drinking tonight?
  9. I can see some parallels with the cork vs screw top debate with wine but there is a much smaller element of tradition with bottle caps. If you're really attached to your bottle-opener then you can certainly still use it on the twist-off caps. Is it an issue of cost?
  10. A number of years ago I went with my wife to Portland, ME and found myself sitting in a pub drinking Sunday River Lager almost the entire time we were there. I thought it was a very nice beer but would like to refresh my memory. Does anyone know of a place that can ship Sunday River Lager or Sunday River Alt to Florida?
  11. Miller to introduce self-cooling can The specially modified cans use proprietary engineering to create a temperature drop that will reduce the I.C. Can contents by a minimum of 30° Fahrenheit in just three minutes. When activated, the all natural desiccant contained within a vacuum draws the heat from the beverage through the evaporator into an insulated heat-sink container. It is this patented vacuum-power which lowers the temperature so dramatically and quickly, leaving the beverage inside cold. The I.C. Technology is 100% safe non-toxic and environmentally benign, because the whole process is the driven by the simple physics of water evaporation. Expect the first cans to show up on store shelves in mid-2007
  12. I walked into my local MegaMart liquor store and saw about 10 cases of Sam Adams Double Bock sitting there. I asked the mnager to ring one up for me and he told me they were all for one person and that there was no more in the store. Well i ordered two cases and picked them up the next week. I am a fan of German DoppleBocks and Mai Bocks and didn't think that anywhere else in the world could brew such beers. We blind tasted Sam Adams Double Bock with Spaten Optimater and Capital Brewing Blonde Double Bock. The Spaten is 7.2% alcohol and the Sam Adams a whopping 8.8%. It was close between the Sam Adams and the Spaten with the Sam Adams having the smoother taste but Sam Adams was judged the best. The Blonde was very smooth but missing the roasted flavor hence the Blonde Appellation. This is the first time i have seen a non German beer taste better than a German DoppleBock or Mai Bock in a blind tasting. -Dick
  13. Ad Age article Think this is a good marketing ploy or a really good taste idea?
  14. The NYTimes tasting panel meets the Lambic style and comes away impressed. Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/03/dining/03beer.html Audio bits: http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/dinin...RE/blocker.html Asimov's blog topic: http://thepour.blogs.nytimes.com/?p=27#more-27 Great introduction to a style of beer that doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves.
  15. Forbes Magazine article and slideshow and do check out the slideshow ... Agree with some of their "Coolest Beer" choices?
  16. I was paging through my copy of 'Michael Jackson's Great Beer Guide' the other day, and there's this glass in there I've been trying to find. I can't even find a picture of it to link up to, so I'll have to describe it. It's a footed, tulip shaped beer glass without any engraving or writing on it. It's featured several time throughout the book. The book says that all of their glasses came from the breweries themselves or German glass maker Rastal. I checked their site and couldn't find it. So my question: Does anyone know who makes this glass and where to buy it? Also, are their any online or offline retailers for beer glasses that you like? Thanks for the help!

    Fresh Hop Beers

"Fresh" or "wet" hop beers are made by adding freshly harvested hop flowers to the beer at some point during the brewing process. They are truly seasonal ales, as they can only be made at the time the hop flowers are harvested. This is usually in in August or September depending on climate. Interestingly, while they are extremely hoppy, the flavor of fresh hops is quite different from that of dry hops. The beers made with them often have a mellower, herbaceous, grassy, and floral hop flavor instead of the biting citrus or pine character associated with dry hops. Some West Coast examples of this style of beer are Deschutes' Hop Trip, Moonlight Brewing's Green Bud Ale, and Russian River Brewing's HopTime Harvest Ale. There is an annual festival in Yakima celebrating fresh hops, called, unsurprisingly, the Fresh Hop Festival. This year it takes place on October 7. I talked to the folks at Toronado last night and they are 90% sure they will be holding a Fresh Hop festival again this year near the end of October. PS. I could have sworn someone started a thread here about a fresh hop beer; but, I'll be darned if I can find it this morning.
  20. Other stouts always seem a little thin/watery when compared. whats the secret?
  21. One of our writers at Intrepid Media (and an enthusiastic home brewer) has published an article putting forward this controversial idea: beer is more complex than wine, and that's why wine people don't like it. A Hop From the Grape Vine. Among his points: Thought the beer aficionados around here might be interested in reading and weighing in.

    Seasonal Beers

We all love beer. Who doesn't? I have my favorite staple beers like pilsner urq. and such, but i came across this seasonal beers list (I guess for summer) on novusvinum.com, a wine website of all places. Some of these look pretty good, but I have no personal experience with them nor do I know where to pick them up, either in NY or LA. Are they only available for one season? What's the best season...Can anyone tell me what's so special about these seasonals and point me to the best one and in the right direction for a store? www.novusvinum.com/beer/features/top10summer_beers.html Thanks! 23. One is a wheat beer, one is a white beer. But with several European countries producing variations of both(weizen, witt etc), plus the close relationship of the styles, it can be confusing! Some Weiss(wheat) biers have flavours and a cloudy white colour similar to a white beer.. Do these styles overlap or are they an entirely different category?

    A Decade of Bastards

Stone Brewing turns 10 this year and is throwing a 10th Anniversary Celebration and invitational beer festival on September 9th. They are also brewing a special 10th Anniversary IPA released in 22oz bombers and 3 liter bottles. Here is how the brewmaster describes the beer:
