Carrot Top - The odd restaurant that you're referring to is the Linger Lodge in Bradenton. A copy of their menu can be found here. There are any number of unique places in the area, especially when you start going inland (East of I-75). In some cases, it's like a different world.

Try this recipe from Gonnella Bread.

If the chorizo is neon green, most, if not all, of the color comes from commercial food coloring. In the more desirable, and duller, green chorizo, the color is obtained through the addition of items such as chard leaves, parsley, spinach, etc.

Corn smut or fungus. Wonderful stuff.

Jamie - From your description, it sounds to me like you may have picked up a box of Mantis Shrimp.

Count me in also. And, while it's certainly premature, count me as another vote for Vie. I love the place and dine there 3 or 4 times a month. I also love the fact that my current house is about 5 minutes away. Virant doesn't post much, if anything at all, on the forum but, he is a occasional lurker. While there are a lot of great restaurants that would be very happy to be the venue for an eG gathering, I think he would push the envelope a bit more than most. As mentioned by nsxatsy, the Fri. rush hour commute from the Loop by car can be brutal. A really simple solution would be to do what I, and thousands of others, do daily. Take the Metra commuter train from Union Station. By express, it's around 15 minutes to Western Springs. Local trains take about 30 minutes. Starting around 7:00 P.M., return trains run hourly until midnight. Unless you are a very slow walker, the front door at Vie is about 2 minutes from the station. I don't know what the daily cost is but, it's probably in the area of $8. Plus, you have the opportunity to have a pre-cocktail hour cocktail for the train ride out.

I'm not in the restaurant business but I have a number of friends who are and, from what they tell me, scams like this are not that uncommon. The incidents that I've heard about however, are demands for substantialy larger amounts of money. Anyway, if it were me, I would do the following in a courteous and businesslike manner... - Do not call her back - Sounds like your busy enough as it is. - If she calls back, tell her you will not be sending a check. If she can produce a receipt, tell her to come to your cafe and you will give her a ham sandwich or something else of like value. Nothing doing on the other items. - If she can't produce a receipt, tell her there is nothing that you can do. Case closed. - If she does something goofy like threaten to sue you, give her your hours of operation so the sheriff will know when someone will be there to accept the summons. - If she threatens to never patronize your cafe again, thank her profusely.

I received my current smoker for Christmas, 2005 and the book was included as a bonus. Early on, I referred to it frequently but had pretty much forgotten about it until I came I noticed this thread. I flipped through the book and came across a few a few recipes that, although modified for personal taste, have become family favorites...... -Carolina Sandwich Slaw - P. 62. For pulled pork sandwiches -Cha-Cha Chorizo - P. 96. Made as patties, it's an excellent breakfast sausage. -Spicy Asian Flank Steak Salad - P. 294. This is extremely good, even if prepared without the greens as a salad. -Bar-BQ Ranch Sauce - P. 353. With a few mods, this has become the "Go-To" BBQ sauce in our house. All in all, "Smoke & Spice" is an excellent reference book for smoke cooking. Both novices and those with many years of experience of cooking by this method will find a ton of recipes, tips, and helpful techniques. Thanks for starting this thread and jogging my memory, A Patric. I think that I'll be doing the flank steak today.

I agree with FG-Sounds like a Moltini. Possibly this unit. If I recall correctly, the Bonnets I've seen are framed in silver. However, at the prices they charge, I'm sure you could get it framed in any finish that you want.

BRM AKA MacGyver - Very nice mod. I may "upgrade" to something like that. For a really cheap cold smoke mod.... Cheap styrofoam cooler + dryer hose+ duct tape. Cut a hole in one end of the cooler for the dryer hose. Insert and secure with the duct tape. Tape the oher end of the dryer hose over the smoker vent. Cut a small hole out of the other end of the cooler to act as a vent. As an option, cut a cooling rack to size to fit about halfway down the slanted sides of the cooler.

What did you think of Salt? Better than the old restaurant? Did you have the tasting menu? We had lunch at the RC a month or so ago (and it was quite good) - but haven't had time to get up there for dinner at Salt yet. Robyn ← Robyn.... I liked Salt very much and would certainly recommend it. Though the predecessor restaurant was quite nice, I prefer the current offering. I'm sure that the "Old Guard" would probably disagree with me. No tasting menu here. Didn't know that they had one though it seems logical that they would. My meal there was a business dinner for 4. I've found that tasting menus are difficult under those circumstances. Also, I never saw the regular menu. My plane to JAX arrived 2 hours late and I knew I would be pushing it to make the scheduled reservation time. About 20 minutes out, I called my guests, who were having appetizers and cocktails in the lounge, and told them to take the table. I also told them to order a drink, look over the menu, and order something for me that I might like. It worked out fine. Five minutes after I sat down, I was served a wonderful lobster and goat cheese ravioli dish. I'm not sure if it was a special or off of the regular menu. I'll be back in JAX in a couple of weeks and, following the conclusion of my business, intend to check into the RC for an evening and revisit Salt in a more relaxed fashion.

Alex.... Can't help you with Lisle. That's quite a bit further west than my stop. It's been awhile since I've been in that area and don't recall anything of consequence. It might be worthwhile checking it out before you catch the Metra train. I've been to My Thai though it's been awhile. As I recall, it was good but nothing out of the ordinary. Can't help you with Takumi. I would guess that the cab to/from Avec would run $8-$10 including wait time and tip. I pretty much discounted Greektown considering food temps, etc. One place just came to mind, known as Artopolis that's a great little bakery and cafe. Very good apps, salads, and sandwiches on their homemade bread. It's quite reasonable, open when you are there, and no more than a 10 minute walk directly west of Union Station. Check it out.

Alex... A couple of assumptions on my part. It appears that you are taking the Amtrack train to GR which, if I recall correctly, departs around 5:30 P.M. If so, you're Metra commuter arrives around 4:00 P.M. Also, the food that you are looking for will be eaten cold or at room temp. I'm fairly familiar with the are since I use Union Station daily for the commute to my office which is 2 blocks away. Within the station itself, I would opt for a sandwich and/or salad from Corner Bakery. Everything else is downhill from there. Can't speak about Nino Panino other than it does not look very appealing. Metro Deli should be avoided at all costs except, if you're so inclined, a pre-boarding drink or one (or more) to take with you for the trip. In the immediate area around the station, most of the places are closed on Saturday. A few casual ones that are open during the day have limited lunch hours and will be closed or closing when you arrive. Most of the better places are also closed on Saturday with a few exceptions during opera season. Unfortunately, they don't open until 5:00 P.M. which would cut it a bit close. You're options expand somewhat with a short cab ride of 5 minutes or so. My first choice would have been Blackbird for the charcuterie plate. Problem is they don't open until 5:30. Their sister restaurant next door, Avec, opens at 3:30, however. A copy of their menu can be found here. If this appeals to you, I would suggest calling ahead with a pre-order, grab a cab (which are plentiful), have him wait while you pick up the order, and return to the station. Total elapsed time should not exceed 15 minutes. You may also want to consider the options available in the area of the Metra station that you will be using for the trip to Union Station. Safe trip.

I recently had dinner at Salt, the flagship restaurant at the Ritz Carlton on AI. The food, service, and ambience is probably the best in the area. If you feel like venturing out a bit, Bistro Aix in Jacksonville is always a good call. It's about a 30-45 minute drive from AI.

The control panel on an older GE electric range that I had in a second home in Florida recently crapped out and I was informed that it would cost $450 + labor to replace it. I opted to shop for a new range. Since I have never shopped for an electric range (no other options available), I sought the advice of some neighbors and friends on the features that I should be looking for. I started (and finished) my shopping at Home Depot since I had a store credit of nearly $600. I fully expected to walk out with a GE Profile. After it was said and done, I ended purchasing this unit manufactured by LG. The price was $1,299 (+ tax) with delivery, installation, and removal of the old unit included. I added 4 years to the 1 year warranty for an additional $89. The model has all of the features that I was looking for plus several other appealing features that I didn't expect. Since I am at this particular house about 30% of the time, and eat out often when I am there, I have only used the new range 4 or 5 times. So far, I have been very pleased. Maybe there are others out there who can better comment about a longer term experience with LG ranges. In any event, you may want to check it out.

Long shot guess here - The Godfather?

Easy Rider....i thought it was such a cool movie til I saw it again recently ← Another correct answer. You folks are good.

What movie contains the following line.... ""Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye. We've come to play for our dinner. Or should I say, stay for our dinner. Or even slay for our dinner...We've come to drink your wine, taste your food and take pleasure in your women.""

A boyhood fantasy of mine: Ann Margaret covered in chocolate syrup. Tommy is the answer. ← You are correct - A fantasy of mine as well.

New challenge. One of the most memorable scenes, in what movie, featured baked beans and chocolate syrup?

It's not 9 1/2 weeks, is it? the honey/ice cube things sounds like something that might have been in it? ← We have a winner. Bread and Butter (Devo) is on the soundtrack. Honey and ice cubes are a couple of the props.

There's been absolutely no action on # 5 so I'll add, as a new clue, an additional combo that was prominent in the movie - honey and ice cubes. ← Tampopo? ← No.
