    Making Rum

So how does one get around the BATF and a still license? I was under the impression that home distilling is not legal from information on the BATF website. The only thing that even comes close is a permit for schools to make alcohol for use as fuel.
  2. According to a friend of mine Cincinnati is the Midwest’s equivalent to San Francisco. You may want to see if there are any free papers there that are for that market segment, here in Chicago they have 4.
  3. A few places here in Chicago use the choice idea. For about $12-15 you just get the entree, for a few dollars more it is a meal package of some type ranging from veg. and starch to a compleate mealk. Depending on the place.
  4. Well made Red Beans and Rice, could live off it.
  5. Surely, you are kidding me. Would you also like to know where I live? ← I see the question as being valid even if answered in a broad sense like, in an Italian joint in Newark. I see you taking pot shots in other threads too and hiding behind a screen name. One of the reasons I have refrained from this thread is your constant and needless antagonistic attitude. You held yourself out as being in the profession how about some sort of proof rather than deluded paranoid behavior? As for Charlie I have already made it well known my feelings towards him as a professional and a person as well as other aspects of his overrated existence.
  6. In Chicago we have a place by the same name that is a mock speakeasy, gangster show, eatery.
  7. To my recolection it is one or the other, both good dishes but not both. Marsala bing mushrooms in brown wing gravy, Scallopini in a white garlic. ← ...perhaps greenwich is thinking of scallopine the cut of veal....and when I think Marsala sauce, I just know there's Marsala wine in...I don't tend to eat it because I don't enjoy the Marsala sauce. ← That might be true, I had not thought of that aspect. There are a lot of cooking terms used incorrectly. Like calling basic tomato puree and seasonings gravy.
  8. It will lighten hair. citric acid is the main ingrediant in sun in hair highlighter.
  9. some of the places in Chinatown near me sell the burners for woks, about $30-60.
  10. To my recolection it is one or the other, both good dishes but not both. Marsala bing mushrooms in brown wing gravy, Scallopini in a white garlic.
  11. At this point I would kill for a box of Tower Isle. So few places in Chicago do a good job of making them. Most places charge too much for them to boot.
  12. Your ability to turn out an impressive meal on short notice frightens your Gay friends. ← ? i dont get it ← Then I doubt you would get the explanation.
  13. Your ability to turn out an impressive meal on short notice frightens your Gay friends.
  14. That sounds like one of the best examples I have seen. I hate the term!
  15. Some good points I wish to add the following thoughts. Back in the day when I developed my own film I would mix stop bath from Glacial Acidic Acid for a 5% solution. Come to find out that white vinegar is %% acidic acid and a lot cheaper to boot. One of the hazards with using household bleach to sanitize is that if it comes in contact with other agents it can release chlorine gas. Part of the problem is if a little is good a lot is better mentality. I don’t know how many times I have seen people use bleach straight from the jug to clean a floor only to be gagging moments later. Also people can get sick from bleach if it builds up on a surface or does not dry. This normally manifests itself in the eat a meal and less than an hour later you feel sick syndrome. Soap and detergens can do this too if not properly rinsed. Even after being certified by the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago in food service sanitation I don’t always follow the “rules” and a lot of the rules make a certain amount os sense from a percentage point but play little effect in a home kitchen. I would venture to guess that most home kitchens would fail a city of Chicago health inspection, mine included. People don’t normally store food in the refrigerator correctly. Even people using dishwashers wet nest there dishes rather than let them air dry. Food stock is not marked and rotated according to date. That’s the short list of common errors without getting obscure or going into proper storage of chemicals. I think the reason some people get obsessed with cleaning is we have become conditioned to do so. Why use soap and hot water to wash your hands when Germ-X waterless hand gel is available? Why use washing soda and hot water with a little ammonia on your floors and counters when you can buy 3-7 other things that are specialized to get the crud from your sink, shine your linoleum and polish your marble counters?
  16. Some states ban its use as a sanatizer because people use it incorrectly. IE right out of the jug. 4-5% is all that is needed as some others have pointed out.
  17. I am not quite sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult. ← I think CharityCase got us confused. See my comment at post 86 on this topic. Now compare your avatar and mine. ← Your skin tone is darker; you have a Mac and a mug of coffee. I have lighter skin, sunglasses and a headset. I guess if one was on the right drugs we could be confused for one another.
  18. I am not quite sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult.
  19. Well, DDT did help a lot in the fight against malaria, didn't it? ← The still use it in parts of Africa.
  20. The crucial point with GMOs spread in the environment is not risk taking. It's risk imposing. ← There is painfully little stopping people from producing their own food if they are dedicated. It's like choosing not to own a car in America. You can do it, it's just a little more work. FWIW, it's really interesting that GMO's are more discussed than the trade subsidies that I've mentioned 3 or 4 times in my posts. Apparently no one really thinks that food for democracy is a strange way of conducting internation politics. ← When I lived in NJ and had some form of yard I did grow vegetables and often in amounts were I had a surplus to give away or freeze for later use. I now live in an apartment in Chicago and don’t have a yard or even a balcony. I have grown some plants inside but the yield is usually low. Pole beans, tomatoes and zucchini do the best peppers and herbs do well too but having all these 5 Gal. Buckets around becomes cumbersome. Corporate welfare is a big issue especially when large companies are milking the system. There is no reason that cargil or ADM should be getting money from funds designed to help independent operators. In some cases it keeps the cost of goods down but more often bolsters the profit lines of already profitable entities. It also restricts competition and keeps some players out of the market.
  21. Excellant question; for me it is not the singular of the corporation, cause a corporation is a person, but what is a group of corporations, if we in theory can prove a singularity in a corporation then can we prove plural in a corporation, then how does It defend itself?????????????????? steve ← More interesting would be the question of imposing penalties against corporations. If a corporation is a person from the point of law can one be put to death? Enron was an assisted suicide if you look at it the right way.
  22. Good point but if it is The Centre in Del. ask Dr Rehines
  23. I am open minded to how safe GM foods are, if they Monsanto are so confident that there will be no long term effects on us, the they should not have a problem to disclose all foods that contain GMO's, this mostly is what my thesis is all about. " I believe that all GMO"S should be disclosed to the public, all foods containing GMO's should be listed and told if there is any animal genes or any other gene not normally occurring in nature" The scientist have not proved anything, they do not have any data showing 20 years of research in an open lab showing how GMO's interact in nature, until that time I will always be reluctant to believe everything that is written by a huge corporation supporting only one side of science. steve ← I agree with most of this; it should be disclosed and I should have the ability to choose. We are too close to the subject with not enough data to make any sort of determination at this point. My problem is with people seeing the boogieman behind every corner; be it corporations, terrorists, The Devil or whatever. Was the high fructose sweetener in my soda made from GM corn from Monsanto or a more traditional hybrid from ADM? Do I have a product that contains material from Cargil that was bought from farmers at market or raised on factory farms by Con-Agra? Farming is a necessary evil if we want to eat; most of us are not in the position to try to grow our own food. Then the question could become are small inefficient family farms better or worse in the long run? I think people tent to over romanticize certain things and farming is one of them. Yes there are dangers if there are too few players in an industry. Some industries seem to have more problems than others Petro-Chem and Agriculture share some nasty secrets some are even common; remember DDT? Cheap to make and use and supposedly safe and by using it we wiped out species of animals and brought others near extinction. Edison was quick to play to the fact that AC electricity killed people to play up his plans for a DC power grid. I don’t think we have enough facts to actually make a decision on GM food at this point. Heck in the ‘60’s they said that LSD would mess up your chromosomes and give you horrible psychotic flashbacks.
  24. I love this type of over generalization; If you check you will find it was Dow that gave us Agent Orange, Merck and Squib along with others on the hormone bit, PCB from any of the large chemical companies. Some of the stuff you mentioned isn’t even areas that Monsanto works in. You mention ties to the current administration but fail to report on how much Dupont and Corning gave Clinton. If you presented your facts in a more compelling light you would get farther. Part of why you come off as neo-luddites is that is the face we the public see most often. This happens at both ends of the spectrum; emotional statements used to bolster a logical argument. Along with the inevitable clustering of evils and rhetoric.
  25. In your effort to slam Monsanto you ignore one factor. It was a civil suit Monsanto brought against a farmer for reasons of intellectual property. . I was paraphrasing the article; I think the exact wording was “ecological” harm not harm to the bottom line of a corporation. Pollen crosses fields all the time, just because Monsanto wanted to pull a fast one has nothing to do with how safe or unsafe GM food is.
