  1. Celebrity Deli in Falls Church (Loehman's Plaza) makes a good Reuben. I think there is also one in Rockville...Celebrity is pretty good all around.
  2. Just tried the Coffee Heath Bar Crunch on Saturday. Oh. My. God.
  3. I'm sorry, but what is jook?
  4. A really nice idea, but they are health conscious and will only eat turkey with mustard. I made turkey sammies with spinach-artichoke spread and red onion on homemade thin foccacia, toasted in the oven. It's a start.
  5. That is such good news. Thanks for the heads up; I barely read the paper yesterday as I was making ratatouille and gearing up for the Skins game. It's nice that he's learning her recipes. I'll have to get out that way sometime soon.
  6. Roasted a 7-lb turkey breast last night (99 cents a pound!) - and there's only the two of us. Besides sandwiches, pasta, and soup, any interesting things I can do with this thing?
  7. I used to hate spinach unti a few years ago. Fresh baby spinach + lots of garlic + extra virgin olive oil + hot pepper flakes (+ sometimes a little anchovy melted into the oil) =
  8. There seem to be an awful lot of cookbook threads whipping around on e-gullet... I have so many damn cookbooks that my sister helped me box up a bunch and then she labeled it "Loser Cookbooks" Anyway, these are the ones out of the many many that get used on a regular basis: Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen, Lidia Bastianich (FANTASTIC - snaps to Lidia on this one) How to Cook Everything, Mark Bittman The Best Recipe, Cook's Illustrated Simple Italian Cooking, Mario Batali Essentials of Class Italian Cooking, Marcella Hazan Joy of Cooking Betty Crocker's "Red Book" for basic good food Make It Italian, Nancy Verde Barr All of the Best American Recipes series - the "best" from the year's cookbooks, newspapers, Internet. Very nice. I like to look at Michael Chiarello's Casual Cooking, but haven't made anything yet. Plus too many recipes printed off Food TV.com. They're taking over my house. OK, I'll stop now.
  9. I'm ready to say goodbye to THIS summer. A crappy, rainy spring led to a hot, yucky, rainy summer, then Hurrican Isabel...ENOUGH!!!! Give me my Redskins on an October afternoon, cooking something good like chili & cornbread, lentil soup & popovers, pork loin & roasted root veggies, hot Italian sausage & roasted peppers a la Lidia & foccaccia, white cheddar-beer soup with country ham crunchies... The list is endless.

    Snapple

Strawberry Lemonade, which apparently they no longer make It tasted just like a strawberry Starburst.
  11. We always order business lunches from The Corner Bakery. Of course, since I'm just an AA, I rarely have to sit in on the meetings. I just order an extra ham on pretzel bread for me. I make pretzel rolls that are awesome, but I can't figure out how they make that bread.
  12. Eeeewwwww. Got my copy yesterday. Eeeewww. And usually Gourmet's covers are so...nice.

    Ham

    Or dinner...
  14. Julia says you can make them ahead, but cover them and lay a wooden spoon between cover and pot. She said they don't get that off taste that way. And will also keep them warm.
  15. With mayo?? When I was a kid I put salt on Wonder bread and ate it. But only if no one was looking.
  16. Mmmmmmm...cachapas. Had them on the side of a mountain road in Venezuela, cooked over an open flame by a woman with a monkey on her back. Literally. With queso blanco. My Venezuelan ex used to like to dip queso blanco in hot chocolate for breakfast. He also made a mean arepa.
  17. Uh-huh. That's got it all goin' on...sweet, salty, hot, cold. One of the only reasons left to go to McDonald's.
  18. That doesn't make me go ew. What did once was watching my boyfriend's father put peanut butter on green pepper strips.

    Ham

Baked a 6-pound ham yesterday. Had biscuits to go with and a nice corn & red pepper salad. Besides the usual sandwiches, frittatas, mac & cheese, potato gratin...what the hell can I do with all this ham?????????
  20. Went to Trader Joe's on my lunch hour today to get a gift certificate for a friend's birthday. Only intended to pick up a few things, but as usual the TJ bug got me and I spent $100 not including the gift certificate. Despite having a six pound baked ham in my fridge from yesterday, I succumbed to: proscuitto, rosemary ham, Serrano ham, and Genoa salami. Plus about 5 types of cheese. Some very cheap wines (not 2 Buck Chuck). A 12-pack of Spaten beer. Extra green and murky reserve olive oil. A big hunk of Ghiradelli milk chocolate. Tomato and roasted red pepper soup. A roasted vegetable stromboli. Greek pizzas. Chovies. I must be stopped.
  21. I used it on a baked ham. It sort of tastes like those little red cinnamon candies.
  22. Just made my mom's Pot Roast French Dip sandwiches the other night. You take a hunk of chuck and braise it for 3 hours. My mom's recipe uses only water to braise I added beef broth & red wine. After it's done you check the liquid level and add more stock if necessary, worcestershire, dehyrated minced onions and simmer it for awhile. I also put in a little soy sauce. Big buttered toasty rolls with provolone melted in them, stuff with beef, dip in broth. Yum.
  23. Oh, and they better not be out of Sierra Nevada.
  24. If you can swim all the way to Burke I've got a freezer full of goodies that I'm scared I'm gonna lose if the power goes out. I took out turkey cutlets and brats this a.m. One for tonight, one for tomorrow night. I have a gas stove. And a non-electric can opener. I tried to get D batteries, water, and ice yesterday to no avail. Will re-attempt this evening.
  25. Um, no...Irish. Don't the Irish know how to cook lamb?
