  1. There are also a couple of great places near where you'll be staying also. The Barking Frog is one of my favorites but might be on the expensive side. I wouldn't use it for your one decent meal. Another favorite is Ooba's Mexican Grill. I know I sound like a broken record but, for your one decent meal, I would recommend Union. I believe there is no better value in the city. If you're looking for dining companions, PM me and I'm sure we can set you up
  2. I noticed that they were doing construction again. It looks nice inside. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that, with the addition of Tilth and Smash to the neighborhood, a real cocktail bar can survive.
  3. Surely I'm not the only one who has notes scribbled in the margins and frontispieces of their cocktail books! ← And cocktail napkins and coasters with drinks written on them by our favorite bartender! I think the Access database is a fab idea. I need to become more proficient in Access for my job and what better way to do that than by creating a cocktail database
  4. It's open already. I had a good (not great) cupcake from there a couple of weeks ago. Much better than Cupcake Royale. Finally dropped by here tonight at a friends urging. I agree that the cake is MUCH better tha CR's both moister & richer, but I prefer the icing at Royale. (plus no lavendar at Trophy ) Also these are a bit smaller, but cost more @ $3/cupcake. The space seemed a bit sterile, and the girl working the counter tonight was pretty indifferent both to us as customers and to her product. ← Oooh, they raised their prices already. I was there again on March 1st and the cupcakes were $2.75. I bought a dozen mini cupcakes for my book group and they were quite the hit!
  5. Can't hurt to try! We use regular charcoal because it burns slower. We use the Minion Method for the charcoal. Of course we add some soaked hardwood for flavor. But we're not really using ours as a smoker. It's too hard to add more coals to the Komado. You really don't want to open the lid once it's going.
  6. I have a komado pot that was brought to my grandmother by a merchant marine friend. This was sometime in the late 50's. We use ours pretty regularly - a dozen times a year or so, primarily for roasting or semi-smoking. We use charcoal (it doesn't take very much) and open the lid minimally or not at all. The ceramic cooker retains heat very well and you don't want to lose it once you've got it all heated through. I have no ideas on how to replace the lid. I doubt you'll get the even heat retention with a broken one. Maybe you could call a local retailer of the Big Green Egg and see what they recommend.
  7. To update my responses: knowing it was a 3 PM unplanned stop after a lunch at 11:30, I wouldn't have felt compelled to order anything beyond coffee, tea or the like. My answer to the original question, based on the original post, remains that not ordering anything was rude and possibly controlling. I hope this is not what has been referred to as name-calling, as it was simply a reply to a question regarding a behaviour/situation posed. If it was taken that way, I apologize. MargyB, I hope you do continue to post because, as others have said, you certainly started a spirited discussion!
  8. I think we're all forgetting that, to the OP, a half of a cobb salad would have been okay. What each of us chooses to eat and not eat is beside the point. Now, I may have decided to do the same thing as the OP if I had a MIL-zilla (trust me, I can be very passive/aggressive) but I'd know that my actions were rude
  9. I can't imagine that this would be considered anything but rude. Or a power play in the very least. Key words to me are "visiting in-laws", "the 4 of us went out to lunch" and "senior community" More key words "will or will not eat". Ah, then there was something that you would eat! Polite company would have ordered the full cobb salad and eaten only the half you originally wanted.
  10. Does anyone know any more information about the above mentioned coffee shop, such as the name of the shop, or the name of the barista? ← I was wondering the same thing. Is it the guy from Zoka who had one a few years running?
  11. Vessel opens at 3 PM This is dangerous information.............
  12. It's open already. I had a good (not great) cupcake from there a couple of weeks ago. Much better than Cupcake Royale.
  13. That was such a fun coincidence last night. My friend visiting from LA must think I know half of Seattle! We had the rabbit loin, the scallops and the monkfish. The monkfish blew me away it was so good. If you're going to see a show at the Showbox, Union is the place to go for pre and post concert dining!
  14. That's a great list. Salumi is open for lunch only. Le Pichet, Samurai Ramen and Dahlia are open for lunch and dinner and Union is open for dinner only.
  15. I am so disappointed that Sam is gone. I have no idea what Tom was thinking by complaining that Sam didn't cook anything. I loved that Padma vehemently disagreed with him. I love it even more knowing she might have been stoned while disagreeing! It seemed to me that Sam's dessert was the only thing the guests asked for seconds of. I don't think it was the case of whether or not Marcel deserved to be in the finals (in my opinion he did not). He was going to make it due to the fact he is so polarizing to the audience. Just read through this thread to see many differing opinions.
  16. There are so many but in Seattle Kitchen some of our favorites are (going from memory so the titles won't be exact) the corn bread pudding, the mustard prime rib, the trout with apple cider butter, the grilled bread salad, mussels with sake ginger butter, maple cured pork chops, benegal spiced lamb, short ribs, the lentils, winter salad...............................damn I really do use this book!!! ← Oooh, don't forget the roasted tomatillo salsa. Yum!
  17. Hi Amir! You got a great amount of air time. It was so fun to see you! I have it saved on my Tivo and can give you a DVD of it if you want. Or you can come on over to watch it - congratulatory drinks will be on me! PM me to work out the details....... Lauren
  18. I don't think I know of this place......tell me more? ← Kevin Davis: opening Feb 1? ← Wow, that menu looks great, and he has the Caviar Pie from the Oceanaire menu - yay! ← Flash Fried Beecher's Cheese Curds? That can't suck! So is this in the old Vivanda spot?
  19. I don't think I know of this place......tell me more?

    Sonoma recommendations?

One of my favorite wineries is Seghesio. I don't think they produce a Pinot, but their Zin is very good.
  21. In case you do want to order cooked crab, I live in Seattle and really like Pure Fish located in the Pike Place Market. I highly recommend adding some smoked salmon to your order. They make the best I have ever tasted. Which reminds me, I need to pick some up for when my family is here for the Holidays!
  22. As I drove by them on my way to work yesterday, I was just thinking I needed to go back there. I really enjoyed it the couple of times I went. That location is horrible though. I can't imagine anything other than a destination restaurant surviving there.
  23. I actually agreed with Gail's opinions about eggs. I love them and I feel some chefs don't treat them with the care needed to make good ones. I think it's okay to emphasise the fact that rubbery, brown eggs are not acceptable. Maybe it will sink in to those who don't understand that! IMO if there is one thing every chef should master, it's cooking great poached and sunnyside up eggs. I was really disappointed to see so many contestants putting out a messy scramble. And what was up with Sam's "toad in the hole"? A burnt bagel with scrambled eggs in the middle? Disgusting. Marcel is a cartoon to me. His hair, the way he talks. Crazy. I thought it was hysterical to hear him attempt to talk "surfer"! And what was that word he used in his one on one with the camera after he won the quick fire? It started with an "S" and my husband and I were laughing so hard I had to pause Tivo
