  1. ^Hmm....if they are the ones that Urban Fare sells in their pastry case, then I've already sampled quite a few of them! I think I remember them being about $1.50 each, but I don't remember whether I liked them or not! (Probably did....knowing myself. )
  2. Has anyone heard of Sugar Arts in Steveston Village (in Richmond)? The baker, Dominque Jarry, is apparently quite famous among pastry professionals.
  3. Oh man, I have to change my most delicious thing--it's the HORSE MEAT I just ate!
  4. Oh my--just had the horse meat from Columbus for dinner (along with their regular sausages and their spicy ones--the spicy ones are so delicious!) I was lazy, so I just served it rare with salt and pepper, but tomorrow I'll do a garlic/anchovy/olive oil thing over the meat. The horse meat smells a little gamey when it's cooking, but the gaminess is virtually undetectable once it's cooked. The meat just falls apart in your mouth--you know how steak can be a little chewy if you serve it blue rare? Horse meat is not chewy at all....just soft and tender.
  5. chocolate waffle with vanilla gelato, rhubarb compote, and candied pecans
  6. I was there today! West won Best Restaurant, and Chef Hawksworth won Best Chef. Chambar won Best New Restaurant. (The food at the reception....omigod! It was beyond my wildest dreams.....!! )
  7. Wow...my Egullet name has become an adjective on this board.
  8. Yes, the drunken chicken was good. I liked how they served it warm--I've only previously had it cold, straight from the fridge.
  9. Double beet chocolate cake! I think Jaime Oliver has a recipe that calls for beets in a cake in one of his cookbooks....it might be called "Surprise cake" or something. That sounds very interesting--I got the cookbook as a gift, and haven't tried any of the recipes yet. Mooshmouse mentioned going to the bakery at the Pacific Culinary Institute by Granville Island...so we might go there next. On Saturday, I'll be having dinner at The Pear Tree and I'll be sure to take a picture of my dessert(s) when I go. I forgot to mention that I had really good fried banana ice-cream at Octopus Garden on Saturday...the fried banana was so incredibly crisp! I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I just got a dish of the fried bananas, without the ice-cream melting on it and leaving the crust less crispy.
  10. You forgot about Blenz for 24 hour coffee And Milestone's for their amazing appies.... (I'm so glad I found Egullet!)
  11. Well, it's one of my friend's favourite spots for dinner....but then you know about my non-Egullet friends.... edit: I haven't been there, so I'm not passing judgement, btw. Would love to try it out, though.
  12. It's a toss-up between the fried, breaded garlic squid with lemon pepper at a Cambodian restaurant, and a chocolate pyramid filled with Sambuca cream, bitter espresso ganache, and ground espresso in a dark chocolate shell. (It's called the Italiano.)
  13. Long's Noodle House back on Wednesday with some Egulleters, then off to Bon Ton for some desserts. Octopus Garden on Saturday with montrachet and his two very generous friends (they offered us some very good sake, and tastes of some of their dishes, including King Crab sashimi! ) I also ate a lot of sashimi (my favourite was the prawn wrapped in sea bream...it was so delicious, I accidentally ate both pieces, leaving my very understanding dining companion with none! ) Another thing I really enjoyed were the deep-fried jumbo shrimp heads, grilled King Crab legs, this uni shooter with mountain potato and a quail egg, chutoro, otoro (lightly seared with yuzu pepper), fresh oysters, kaki pon (fried oysters), this curry fish that came with a black sesame gelee, and fried bananas and ice-cream for dessert! We drank sake and a bottle of Burrowing Owl pinot noir. I drank way too much that night and Sada probably thinks I'm really loud and obnoxious all the time. *cringe* I don't know if this counts, but I ate chocolate for lunch today at Chocolate Arts. Does it count if the amount I paid for the chocolate equals a nice lunch somewhere? One of my favourites was the Rustica; it was infused with cinnamon (I looked for the complete description on the card they give you, but maybe this is a special because it's not there.) And tonight...Da Francesco's for pizza and pasta! I'm eagerly anticipating the highly-touted rose sauce.
  14. Yesterday: I had a wonderful dinner...but if I could only choose one thing, it would have to be the king crab sashimi Today: pasta with anchovies, sausage, olive, and shallots
  15. -steak, sauteed mushrooms with butter and dill, mashed potatoes with butter and cheese -asparagus and mushroom frittata -baked 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies and 1 bourbon pecan pie this week
  16. I made Claire's pecan pie yesterday, adding 2.5 tbsp of bourbon. It was great--my friend and I really enjoyed it. He prefers the thicker, denser type of filling (as opposed to the custardy type) and this pie was great. (Really easy to put together too--what a bonus!) Thanks for posting, Claire!
  17. No, you would have to say, "I'm an acquaintance of someone who's friends with your son's ex. May I have your Clodhoppers recipe?" I haven't tried the Cookies and Clods--that's the black bag, right? Do you like them more than regular Clodhoppers? yesterday: I made a bourbon pecan pie using an Egullet recipe! It was posted by claire979 in the Pastry forum. Very dense and delicious. And I drank some good pinot noir and port with a friend.
  18. Back in high school, it was never a big deal to be late (at least with my friends). If we arranged to meet for dinner at 7pm, no one would be at the restaurant until at least 7:30pm, and no one would blink at anyone arriving 8pm or later. (We didn't make reservations so we wouldn't inconvenience the restaurant.) This is just how we were--we ordered food when we got there, and no one was offended that we didn't wait for them if they were late. No explanations or apologies were needed...I guess we were all very easy-going. I never took offense if some people were late--we would come in small groups, and no one was ever without company. We were the same way in university, though perhaps not quite as late as we were in high school. Still, being 15-20 minutes late was still pretty standard, and no one (as far as I could tell) felt affronted. If someone had made reservations, someone would be there at the appointed time and order for the others stuck in traffic/fighting with SO/lost/still deciding what to wear. Now that I'm 22, I do try to be reasonably on time for lunches and dinners, but it really depends on who I'm eating with. I have lunch or dessert once or twice a week with some of the other Vancouver Egulleters, and I try to be on time because I've noticed that I'm usually the last one arriving (even though I'm usually only a few minutes late--I am notoriously bad with directions!) They seem to be pretty forgiving so far....but really, it wasn't until I read this thread that I found out that this is interpreted as rude by some. If I arranged to have lunch with a friend and she was 15 minutes late, I wouldn't think anything of it. I'd just look at the menu and decide on what to order, and maybe have a cocktail while I'm waiting. I guess I'm just like that, but it's really not a big deal to me. With my non-Egullet friends, we usually say, "I'll be here at _____________ from 7pm-10pm, so drop by whenever." We hang out at casual restaurants, and I think servers are accustomed to having people our age drop by and put in orders for more drinks and food throughout the evening.
  19. In Arne's Foodblog, we went to Patisserie LeBeau. On the weekends, they serve their Belgian waffles with a variety of toppings! During the weekdays, you can only get their waffles without the topppings, but they have all these interesting flavours. My favourite was the mango, and my least favourite was the apple custard.
  20. ^Ohhhhh man.....I have to print out a map and get to Columbus Meats! I don't think I have time until Monday though...so I'll have to wait. (Dammit Lee, I had eggs for breakfast today! Your breakfast looks amazing; why didn't you invite me over?!!! )
  21. In Richmond, I love the dried oyster and duck egg congee at Viva City. It's in the little complex on the corner of No. 3 Rd. and Cambie (hidden in the corner, with a bright pink awning).

    Dinner! 2005

It does to me! (Yesterday's lunch was literally an ice cream sandwich -- chocolate ice cream between two pieces of multigrain bread!) ← GENIUS! Gotta try that now....
  23. I didn't even know people actually made them! I discovered the packaged Clophoppers a few years ago and they are by far my favourite junk food snack from the grocery store. And can I have Ian's mom's number?

    Dinner! 2005

I baked four dozen chocolate chip cookies, and I ate a dozen. Does that count as dinner?
  25. Clodhoppers (chocolate covered graham pieces)
