  1. I meant in the tombs— Lenin and Stalin’s specially. Ive been emailing with my alumni association to try to organize a trip. Not in the winter though!
  2. We had: (For 4 adults and a golden retriever who’s grandparents snuck her bites ) Appetizers: - Shrimp cocktail - Brie baked in puff pastry - assorted antipasto- cheeses, salami, prosciutto, olives Dinner: - Kale sale from Costco ( https://www.eatsmart.net/product/sweet-kale-vegetable-salad-kit/ ) - Store bought rolls - olive olive roasted new potatoes - Marsala glazed mushrooms - Marinated hanger steaks and sweet Italian sausage from a local butcher ( http://www.greenvillagepacking.com/ ) and a “death by chocolate trifle” aka layers of chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, cool whip and crushed heath bars. Not really a typical Christmas dinner. My father is allergic to all poultry (except eggs but including chicken stock) as well as most mild white fish and they don’t grill in the winter so this is a treat for them. My husband enjoys firing up the BGE no matter what the temp (21f) and the sides are simple so it was pretty easy all around and we were able to relax. I hope everyone enjoyed enjoyed their holiday dinner! And I’m starting to realize the dish washing fairy won’t be showing up despite my champagne and chambord wishes!
  3. Dinner for me is a case of the hiccups

    Holiday Nibbles

A 'clean out the pantry' Chex Mix. Didn't have any nuts so I used store bought roasted chickpeas. Pretzel sticks, corn and rice Chex, pretzel sticks and a couple handfuls of lightly crushed pita chips in lieu of bagel chips. Extra butter and extra worcheshire.
  5. I've never tipped the cooking staff. Ever. They make a somewhat decent salary. If you only have a handful of tables who don't tip well you can walk out with nothing after tipping the busser and the bar (if there is one). I've certainly bought beers or a round of after shift drinks to show appreciation but in the US it is not a common or expected practice to tip cooks or chefs.
  6. Omg. I'm so sorry!! Your positive attitude no doubt is helping helping your recovery.
  7. Hi-- welcome to egullet. I have to ask why are you tipping the cook at all? That's a practice I've never seen or heard of and I've worked in various positions in restaurants. Is this your first waitressing job? What are you paid hourly? What state are you in?
  8. Another one disappoints the dining world: https://ny.eater.com/2017/12/11/16759540/mario-batali-sexual-misconduct-allegations i honestly thought Bourdain was alluding to Flay on his tweets prior to this coming out. It's hard to boycott his establishments considering all of the Eatlys are co-owned by him. I'm sad but not shocked. i feel like every day a new story will come out.
  9. Oh my god. That is literally my worst nightmare. I'm so sorry. Thanks for all the ideas! Fortunately this time it's just a temporary crown (and in two weeks it will be a permanent one so I will use these ideas again). After having my my wisdom teeth out- all four and they were all impacted about 15 years ago-- I lost 15lbs I did NOT need to lose. Now I'm wishing I had a couple let go have removed to lose weight!
  10. I apologize if this is a topic-- I did search and couldn't find one that exists. I am cursed with weak teeth and often have uncomfortable dental procedures and/ or oral surgery. Tonight my mouth was numb for hours and I was exhausted from anxiety and nitrious that I made a box of Betty Crocker's Scallop Potatoes. I didn't want soup in case the numb half of my mouth didn't allow for consumption without a bib of some sort. I'm sure I'm not the only one who deals with the need to eat after an uncomfortable dentist appointment. What do you all eat? I've found slowly nibbling on a grilled cheese to work, mashed potatoes of course are easy but sometimes you want protein so scrambled eggs are the only thing I can think of. Suggestions are welcome as I had a temporary cap put on and will have the permanent one to deal with in two weeks.
  11. Thanks. I wonder at times if I am making myself sick, eating rice that has been cooked at then sat out for a few hours. How long is it okay to keep cooked rice at room temperature before it can cause harm? My husband has an iron stomach and can and will literally eat anything but I am not a leftovers fan. Does this raw garlic threat apply to jarred minced garlic? I always keep it in the fridge after opening.
  12. This is probably a really dumb question but is the minced garlic I've purchased in jars cooked? I'm assuming it's not and just kept in some type of oil. I've taken ServeSafe classes and the some ages ago when I was in college. I know raw garlic and cooked rice are potentially harmful even deadly but I don't know why exactly.
  13. This HAS to be the worst. A choice between chicken gumbo or lentil chili. On first class from EWR to SMF on United. Like neither is acceptable for a cross country flight. I almost asked if there were kids meals. Horrible. Why not just pass Bean-o around? This had to be revenge move on the crew that had to deal with turning the plane around that was essentially a gas bomb.
  14. @suzilightning if you have a Charlie browns near you they have German specials right now.

    Methode Rotuts

I've considered Soda Streams and similar items because I do love soda water but because it's almost the only carbonated beverage I like, I can't validate the cost. But if if it makes things fun for you guys then cheers!

    Methode Rotuts

Ok so what exactly is the point here? To make crappy wine somehow drinkable? And to get the drinker drunk? I know carbonation enhances people's reaction to alcohol. Why not just buy a good, drinkable wine? Isn't this on par with adding bubbles to coffee to get the caffeine high faster? Crappy wine is crappy wine. Is this a budget issue?
  17. Ahh Santa Margarita. Such garbage. But when I first started drinking wine is was affordable at $11 a bottle. Now? It could be free and I wouldn't drink it. It's heartburn central. Way too acidic for my taste.
  18. And what's this glove law? For fast food establishments? Certainly not for fine dining or even any place that makes food to order in a restaurant establishment v. a fast food one. I'd prefer NOT to see gloves as well. It reeks of ignorance of sanitation to me.
  19. No no it isn't legal in NJ to not have a proper hand washing station.

    All Things Mushroom

I'm not a particularly good home cook at all. That said, I love mushrooms. If I'm not eating them from a purchased marinated jar, I dry fry them them until almost all the water is extracted then pour a bit or more of sherry or Marsala wine, let that reduce and add as much butter as I want. simple and great alone or on a baked potato or a steak. Or in scrambled eggs. Or a hash!
  21. An English muffin "pizza". English muffins drizzled with olive oil and garlic salt, with cheap Classico pizza sauce and Galbini mozzarella in my Breville toaster oven. I love that toaster oven. In my defense we had nothing in the house after being away for two weeks and I hate seeing any NY team down except when those teams are playing my teams. It was quick and dirty and worked.
  22. What about the people who give apples or toothbrushes? Like why bother? I always loathed those people.
  23. Yea for some reason I think the owners of the establishments I worked in wouldn't be worried about the water police!
  24. At that time I was working at both the ala carte and buffet at The Manor, as well as the Highlawn Pavilion and Rod's. None of them acknowledged such laws. And none of them have since. My husband proposed to me in the paulor cars at Rod's and we had our wedding at the Madison Hotel. Water was always a given.
