  1. Going out. Yea I know. I worked in restaurants for decades. But it’s Ash Wednesday and pizza isn’t appealing. So we’re going to a small Italian restaurant.
  2. My husband will be away for a bit in a few weeks so I wonder if I will eat earlier. I have a feeling I will mostly graze. I can’t eat what most think is a full meal more often than I can. I am a lazy grazer too. A couple marinated mushrooms there, maybe a slice of cheese. Two sips of low fat chocolate milk if I need something sweet. And English muffin half toasted with butter and sprinkled with sea salt. No doubt it isn’t the healthiest. I was an incredibly difficult eater as a child and as an adult I am not but I really won’t eat just to eat. It has to be something that appeals to me.
  3. In the NYC area I’ve seen actual tv commercials for Spam, on a regular basis. I’ve never seen a Spam commercial that I can recall and I’ve never eaten it. I’m not totally opposed, as Taylor Ham is probably a cousin of Spam’s and I do love a good Taylor ham, egg and cheese with salt, pepper and ketchup on a Kaiser roll. I’m a bit curious as to how or even if there is a way to make Spam palatable. Maybe pan fried? I’ll be on my own for a bit in a week and may just try it out.
  4. I will try to take pictures so I can write up a report of my trip. I’m staying in what I gather is an area called Cannonborough. It’s north of the French Quarter but our rental apartment has a trolley stop nearby.
  5. Thanks ya’ll. (I so cannot pull of saying that especially since when I drink I do have an odd northeastern accent ). Since we’re going over St. Patrick’s Day weekend (my bday is 3/17) I figured a good steakhouse dinner to soak the inevitable drinks (which in my instance is mostly wine) was a good idea for an early dinner that night. I have a lunch reservation for Monday 3/19 at Husk. Crowds can irritate me and their lunch menu seemed just as good. I’m thinking of Hominy Grill for Friday. Or SNOB. Or Magnolia Grill. My eyes are a lot bigger than my stomach!
  6. @liuzhou that schedule appeals to me. I get hungry again later because I am a night owl but I tend to have a cup of broth or something simple. I think a lot of when people eat is due to where they live/ the types of industries they work in and if they have children and the ages of the children when applicable.
  7. We’re going to Charleston for an extended weekend next month. I made reservations at Hall’s Chophouse for my birthday. Others on my radar (there are so many!!) are Hominy Grill, Husk, Magnolia’s, SNOB’s , Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, Rodney Scott’s BBQ and Pearlz Oyster Bar. Has anyone been recently or from the area? Any “must try” dishes? We’re only there for four nights so unless we have an awful time I think we will likely go back soon.
  8. @ProfessionalHobbit we eat earlier on weekends as well. Even if we go out, I prefer earlier reservations to avoid crowds.
  9. My husband’s brother was in town from CA recently and we met him for dinner. He was a bit shocked that we made 7:45pm reservations on a week night, but since he was still on CA time he was fine with it. We don’t have kids and my husband commutes to NYC so the earliest we tend to eat is 7:30 and we often eat dinner at 10pm. Ususally we eat at 9pm. I’m curious as to what time others have dinner and why.

    Cuts and scrapes

I tried to put an avocado to make guacamole after a few margaritas. The knife wound up stuck beneath my wedding band. I didn’t look but it bled a lot. I don’t mix drinks with food anymore. I still have a scar large enough that my wedding band had to be resized.

I’m going to contest that as a born and raised and a forth generation Jersey girl.

    Dinner 2018

Does it count as cooking if I did it in my slow cooker? Swedish meatballs with egg noodles. Stupidly simple and cheap but surpringly good and satisfying on a cold night.
  14. Nutella when eaten in Europe after a few “special” smokes is pretty good. As an American, I love Friendly’s Reese’s Pieces sundaes with extra peanut butter sauce.
  15. I meant in the tombs— Lenin and Stalin’s specially. Ive been emailing with my alumni association to try to organize a trip. Not in the winter though!
  16. We had: (For 4 adults and a golden retriever who’s grandparents snuck her bites ) Appetizers: - Shrimp cocktail - Brie baked in puff pastry - assorted antipasto- cheeses, salami, prosciutto, olives Dinner: - Kale sale from Costco ( https://www.eatsmart.net/product/sweet-kale-vegetable-salad-kit/ ) - Store bought rolls - olive olive roasted new potatoes - Marsala glazed mushrooms - Marinated hanger steaks and sweet Italian sausage from a local butcher ( http://www.greenvillagepacking.com/ ) and a “death by chocolate trifle” aka layers of chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, cool whip and crushed heath bars. Not really a typical Christmas dinner. My father is allergic to all poultry (except eggs but including chicken stock) as well as most mild white fish and they don’t grill in the winter so this is a treat for them. My husband enjoys firing up the BGE no matter what the temp (21f) and the sides are simple so it was pretty easy all around and we were able to relax. I hope everyone enjoyed enjoyed their holiday dinner! And I’m starting to realize the dish washing fairy won’t be showing up despite my champagne and chambord wishes!
  17. Dinner for me is a case of the hiccups

    Holiday Nibbles

A 'clean out the pantry' Chex Mix. Didn't have any nuts so I used store bought roasted chickpeas. Pretzel sticks, corn and rice Chex, pretzel sticks and a couple handfuls of lightly crushed pita chips in lieu of bagel chips. Extra butter and extra worcheshire.
  19. I've never tipped the cooking staff. Ever. They make a somewhat decent salary. If you only have a handful of tables who don't tip well you can walk out with nothing after tipping the busser and the bar (if there is one). I've certainly bought beers or a round of after shift drinks to show appreciation but in the US it is not a common or expected practice to tip cooks or chefs.
  20. Omg. I'm so sorry!! Your positive attitude no doubt is helping helping your recovery.
  21. Hi-- welcome to egullet. I have to ask why are you tipping the cook at all? That's a practice I've never seen or heard of and I've worked in various positions in restaurants. Is this your first waitressing job? What are you paid hourly? What state are you in?
  22. Another one disappoints the dining world: https://ny.eater.com/2017/12/11/16759540/mario-batali-sexual-misconduct-allegations i honestly thought Bourdain was alluding to Flay on his tweets prior to this coming out. It's hard to boycott his establishments considering all of the Eatlys are co-owned by him. I'm sad but not shocked. i feel like every day a new story will come out.
  23. Oh my god. That is literally my worst nightmare. I'm so sorry. Thanks for all the ideas! Fortunately this time it's just a temporary crown (and in two weeks it will be a permanent one so I will use these ideas again). After having my my wisdom teeth out- all four and they were all impacted about 15 years ago-- I lost 15lbs I did NOT need to lose. Now I'm wishing I had a couple let go have removed to lose weight!
  24. I apologize if this is a topic-- I did search and couldn't find one that exists. I am cursed with weak teeth and often have uncomfortable dental procedures and/ or oral surgery. Tonight my mouth was numb for hours and I was exhausted from anxiety and nitrious that I made a box of Betty Crocker's Scallop Potatoes. I didn't want soup in case the numb half of my mouth didn't allow for consumption without a bib of some sort. I'm sure I'm not the only one who deals with the need to eat after an uncomfortable dentist appointment. What do you all eat? I've found slowly nibbling on a grilled cheese to work, mashed potatoes of course are easy but sometimes you want protein so scrambled eggs are the only thing I can think of. Suggestions are welcome as I had a temporary cap put on and will have the permanent one to deal with in two weeks.
  25. Thanks. I wonder at times if I am making myself sick, eating rice that has been cooked at then sat out for a few hours. How long is it okay to keep cooked rice at room temperature before it can cause harm? My husband has an iron stomach and can and will literally eat anything but I am not a leftovers fan. Does this raw garlic threat apply to jarred minced garlic? I always keep it in the fridge after opening.
