  1. Sometimes new life can be breathed into an old thread.....
  2. Lesley, What was the name of the olive oil that you mentioned in your Milos review? I'd like to try some next time I stop in to pick up some octopus to go (is Montreal a great city or what?).
  3. A basenji is an African dog that is often referred to as an African Barkless Dog. They do not have vocal chords so they would not be the best breed of dog to raise the alarm.
  4. Perhaps the vineyard was guarded by basenjis!
  5. Lesley, in this particular case it has nothing to do with my friend being upset about the French position on the war in Iraq. Without going into too much detail let us just say that certain people have their own reasons to be upset with the French. Many Montrealers will suffer (or are already suffering) from Americans deciding not to visit our fair city. I am just saying that while is nice to have a vision of what you want it is only "good business" to be flexible enough to cater to your clientelle.
  6. I agree that boycotting French wine is a little silly, I was thinking more of the restaurants' bottom line. If much of the profit comes from the sale of wine then isn't a restaurant the loser in this case. Why not a few "Rhone Rangers" or something in the spirit of compromise?
  7. An interesting note on Rosalie's wine list. I was just speaking with a friend who was there on the weekend and he is one of the people who has a moral problem with buying French wine. As a result of the French-only list he was unable (read unwilling) to have wine with his meal. I know that this is a political issue which has been dealt with on the Wine board, but it is interesting to note. I have not stopped buying or drinking French wine but one wonders whether it mightn't be an idea (at least in the short term) to have some New World options.
  8. Had a great meal last night..the hangar steak is wonderful. Note to self: try something other than the frisee salad with egg. As to the unbuttoned blouses, I really didn't notice anything when we were seated. I didn't notice anything when we were given the menus. Again, I noticed nothing when we were read the daily specials, nor did I see anything when the wine was poured etc. Sure the view was nice, but what really counts was that the food was great.
  9. Welcome jpps While the menus are different, prices, portions, and quality are on a par with what you would expect at Globe....
  10. Bien sur! Bought the 98 at Signature a year or so ago for about $80. According to the SAQ website there are only 13 bottles left in the province (at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City).
  11. Dave, I'm coming to Rosalie on Monday night....glad to know I'm still hip!
  12. Carpet Bagger, sadly I have but one bottle and want to make it count! The 1999 is still available here but at $90 Cdn (approx $60 US) I don't think I'll be buying too many bottles.....or should I?
  13. And I love how certain restaurants try to put you at the tables imediately next to the smoking section when they still have plenty of empty tables further away.........
  14. As a reformed smoker I still think that smoking should be allowed at least at the bar area but don't much like it at the tables. As a client I resent it when I reserve a non smoking table and am seated at a table with an ashtray (and notice that every table has one). I have on more than one occasion at my favourite St. Laurent eatery been seated at a non smoking table (right next to the bar????) when a couple of jerks light up monster cigars. I don't care how "cool" or "connected" the a**holes are but the manager should have the balls to tell them that cigars are simply not permitted.
  15. how many more years before I can crack open my1998 E&E Black Pepper?
  16. Welcome newbie! The place is called Beauties and business is so good that as soon as you sit down, they can't wait for you to leave. I'm all for efficient service but I'd prefer to finish my food before they try to turn the table. Dusty's on the NE corner of St. Laurent and Parc is a good alternative with somewhat less atmosphere (halfwhat between Beauty's and Le Roi du Greasy Spoon). Also worth a try is Bagel's Etc. which if I recall is on St. Laurent corner of Marie Anne. While I haven't gone to either place for breakfast I'd probably opt for either L'Express on St. Denis or Chez Leveque on Laurier.
  17. There is a great B.B.Q. place in Syracuse, NY called "Dinosaur BBQ". They put out a cookbook which has a great recipe for cornbread made with honey, jalapeno, and cheddar. BTW their sauces and rubs are very good and can be found online at Dinosaur BBQ
  18. Whenever I see him fawning and fondling on 911, I'm reminded of an old cookbook I used to have, I think the title was "The Kitchen Casanova". Now that I think of it...great name for a show!
  19. I'll second fullabeans praise for the vegetables. I had the Toulouse sausage main course which came with a nice assortment of brussel sprouts, green beans, carrots, which were both crunchy and tasty. Quite a nice change from vegetables that have been sitting in steam for hours which happens too often even at some better restaurants. The Rosalie version of tarte tatin is fantatstic. Thanks again Dave..... a bientot.

    Corkscrew

The narwhal is indeed a mammal, and while I do happen to have a narwhal tusk, at over five feet in length it makes for a rather unwieldy utensil.

Every once in a while you can get a great deal on Laguiole on ebay......

    Corkscrew

I use a trusty Laguiole but I am intrigued by the new "2 stage" waiters corkscrews that I've seen of late.
  23. Bonjour Jean-Francois, welcome to egullet and congratulations on your new job.

    Open Bottle of Red

I buy the cans of inert gas to preserve wine. It will keep a bottle going for a few days without a tremendous loss of quality. Or, simply drink up! Waste not, want not.
  25. I just wanted to give a plug to a decent Canadian company that makes very high quality stuff that can be very reasonable compared to all-clad, etc. Paderno I have a few of their pans and love the huge covered roaster (cover can be used as a serving dish or gratin, etc.).
