  1. You would think with a median income of $82K (higher if you don't include the Eastern half, I'm certain) that they would be alittle more supportive. Instead, anyone who wants fine dining has to drive into the District to spend their money. Stupid, and not even counting the revenue they're losing from those of us who are buying our wine and spirits elsewhere too. Edit: And I must agree with your "tax-happy" assessment.
  2. We sure wish someone would take the chance here in Rockville. There are two "New Urban" developments of 500K (and up) homes, with large office suites, condos, and apartments, being built within 2 miles of our neighborhood here in Rockville. One, King Farm, has three new restaurants. None of them is a chain, but none is really fine dining either. Fallsgrove, the other development, has filled their shopping/dining area with Panera, Chipotle, Mamma Lucia's, and a few other sit down and fast food chains. What a missed opportunity. Almost the only option in Rockville close to fine dining, that is not a chain, is Addie's, which has the same owner as Black's in Bethesda. It does very good business despite an out of the way location. Of course, with the most asinine liquor laws in the country, fine dining in Montgomery County may be a pipe dream.
  3. Monday nights are now out for me.
  4. My mother makes something similar, with tomato soup, ground beef, onions, and elbow macaroni. Perhaps a pinch of oregano. The recipe was cut from some women's magazine back in the 50's. They called it "American Chop Suey." I hate it almost as much as I hate my mother's seafood casserole with Campbells cream of shrimp soup, rice, and frozen baby shrimp.
  5. Huh? How about "always" contains eggs?
  6. We just got our Cafepress order. Ian's Pig Pickin' onesie is the cutest thing ever.
  7. Probably. Just leave a bottle under the seat of your car for a week, like I did. We did not even bother opening it to wash - it went straight into the trash. And yes, you are supposed to taste it after thawing. That always gave me the creeps for some reason.

    Dinner! 2003

Wed night: teriyaki simmered salmon steamed asparagus dressed with sesame oil and toasted sesame seeds japanese rice with furikake - my daughter loved the sprinkles
  9. I love Zweiback.
  10. Hm, we were going to drive down on Friday, but I'm getting the feeling that maybe we should come down Thursday night. That way we could do some cooking, if Varmint's kitchen is big enough for a crowd. How about a big batch of potato salad? The trashy one with Miracle Whip, yellow mustard, and hard boiled eggs.
  11. I believe that in Quechua, the language of Tawantinsuyu, which colonialists like you and I know as the Inca empire, this dish was referred to as a "hooker." Wow. And how do you say "onion ring" in Quechua? Isn't the onion an Old World plant?
  12. You guys are killing me... Darren, address and phone number, por favor? Is it on 15th?
  13. Maybe if we get as drunk as hell while it's still daylight.... I don't remember the last time I got drunk. Not sure I want to start again now. Besides, someone has to put the kids to bed that night.
  14. Just a Dupont Circle dive. Seriously everyone, what's next?
  15. What I used to love about the F&H is that every drink is a double. Ask for a Jack and Coke, they give you a small bottle of Coke and a tumbler of whiskey. And they will bring you food from Trio. And the jukebox seriously rocked. And the decor looked like a 70's rec room gone bad. ::sniff:: I'm getting all misty eyed...
  16. How about a fine meal at Trio and drinks afterwards at the Fox & Hounds?
  17. To fully enjoy El Nuevo Wong Grande, you must be seated after 2 AM. I learned my most amusing party trick there long ago...retreiving peas from my bra with chopsticks. It was 3am and I'm sure I don't need to say this but we were all drunk as hell. My dinner companions were not the most mature people on the planet. Don't think I've been back since.
  18. Woo hoo! Our power flickered several times last night. We weren't amused.
  19. Onion rings and hookers. I'm in.
  20. Lowbrow? Count me in. My budget needs a break occasionally. I'm still anticipating another visit to RFD, or we could get even more lowbrow than that (see the dive bar thread).
  21. That was you? Seriously, I hung out there regularly from 85-88. It was *not* the friendliest place in town. As long as we're talking DC in the 80's...another memorable long-gone drinking establishment was Chaplins. I, uh, filled all of the shot glasses on the bar one memorable (well, for everyone but me) evening.
  22. I'm pretty white-bread. Using that definition, just our being there should be enough.
  23. fwiw, i brought about 500 too many of each thing. people were very good about using very few plates and utensils. i think this had to do with the fact that everyone ate at once, albeit for about 3 hours straight. and since there was no keg or massive common source, the red cups went largely unused. Thanks Tommy. I will keep it in mind. There will be a keg at this one, right? So red cups, and a permanent marker so that folks can write their names on the cups. And if Costco has them I might pick up a box of wet naps. Is anyone bringing white bread?
  24. Wow. The pig looks great, and the collard greens made me want to jump into the picture! I hope someone makes greens for Varmint's pickin. We should have gone to NJ this weekend. Oh well, maybe we will make it to the next one. Rachel, that jello mold...words fail me...
  25. Bummer. I look forward to the opening. It won't be close to enough to us for regular shopping, but once a month should be doable.
