  1. We have two open bottles of dried thyme and three of oregano. Ours are on the top shelf of one of the pullout pantries. I'd love to move them all to stainless containers on shelves, but wall space is one thing my kitchen doesn't have. I counted and we have about 20 different kids of noodles. Egg noodles (wide and thin), penne, fusilli, orzo, angel hair, spaghetti, spaghettini, elbow mac, rice vermicelli, pad thai noodles, chinese lo mein noodles in the freezer...
  2. Who is "you guys?" Were you trying to be funny? If so, I don't get it.
  3. I just knew I liked you guys. We have everything TMBG has ever done. Scott sings Dr Worm to the kids all the time.
  4. Looks like after.
  5. That Knob Creek was GOOOOOD. My fave drink of the weekend was Katie's limoncello. Sweeeet!

    VD Stew

Scott and I are having this for supper tonight. It is even more amazing after a couple of days. We wanted to bring home some LSD, but there's a law about transporting that stuff over state lines... Thank you Dave!
  7. for some reason, i have this picture in my mind: 4:30 am. 4 or 5 drunk/stoned/full egulleteers sitting around on lawn chairs, with dueling banjos blasting out of the stereo, through the windows, on repeat for hours. It was earlier in the evening, but your vision isn't too far off.
  8. I hope he plans to sleep for three days! Ian is having pork for breakfast.
  9. We made it home safe and sound. The only food in the house in the 2 pounds of pork we brought home with us. Guess I know what's for dinner. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the fabulous Varmint and Dr Mrs Varmint for your awesome hospitality, and for allowing our kids to rampage in your house. We had a wonderful time. Some highlights: The pig. BEST. PORK. EVER. Malawry's hushpuppies. Hanging out on Friday night, eating drinking and talking. Al Dente's baboon story. Funny in print, but absolutely hysterical coming from the man himself. "Shaky Elephant." Meeting the incomparable Dave the Cook, and eating the f***ing incredible VD stew he made. I cannot think of a better use for bunny. Guajolote's coffee.
  10. tommy rules. I told you that was actually me posting. See if I ever forget to log in again.
  11. How long have you been waiting to use that line? WEBCAM! WEBCAM! WEBCAM! WEBCAM! WEBCAM! Someone get Vengroff to lead the tech support team... Scott is taking a well deserved nap right now, but the network is set up and Tarka is here with the webcam so you will get some live action later on.
  12. I just had a rib for breakfast. This might be the best pork I've ever had. It's worth a slight hangover and four hours of sleep. Varmint is my hero too. And it is a thrill to meet Guajolote (AKA Dean 2), Maggie, Aurora, Dave...
  13. Woo hoo! The party has started! Katie and Charlie just arrived, shrimp is cookin' and wine is being drunk.
  14. We arrived safely in NC and we're enjoying the hospitality of V and Mrs V, and there are two little Shorters running with the 4 little Varmints. The pig in the bathtub is a sight not to be believed. Three bottle of wine and a shot of grappa have done me in...time to get some rest.
  15. We're so sorry you can't make it. We were looking forward to meeting you. Jason, I hope your mom feels better soon.
  16. I'm packing today and loading the car tonight and early tomorrow morning. We're bringing all the paper stuff, trash bags, 2 cases of soda, and my sheet pans. Anything else? Did you think we needed the foil steam trays? Those might be better than sheet pans for serving the pig. And how about some munchie type stuff like chips or party mix? ETD is 12pm, so we're gonna be to your house by dinner time.
  17. I'm impressed that you're able to eat curry. I had to give up garlic completely through both pregnancies.
  18. I suspect that the Safeway cake has more issues with quality than just the artificial vanilla.

    Thanksgiving Sides

Seth, that recipe for creamed onions looks delicious. Creamed onions, with or without peas, were always on our Thanksgiving table, along with mashed potatoes and sometimes turnips. Mom usually didn't make sweet potatoes. How about brussels sprouts for a green veggie? No cranberries? I have a cranberry and dried cherry relish that is delicious, easy, and can be made ahead.
  20. No, actually I think I would characterize that as rigid and dogmatic.
  21. Won't the quality of any item depend on the restaurant - Who the suppliers are, how they handle the food and how they prepare it? Yes, consistency is always cited as a hallmark of fast food, but I find the quality varies to a surprising degree from place to place. I'm willing to believe that the sandwich Bayless ate was substantially better than what you're going to get at the drive thru. It was the ideal Sante Fe chicken sandwich.
  22. I've been waiting for someone to address the points that Matthew has been making. I don't think the claim of hypocrisy has been substantiated and no one is willing to discuss relativism. I have a big problem with the CC and their dogmatic approach. It seems to me to be about fresh, organic food for some, and those that can only afford a BK sandwich are screwed until they make organic food affordable, not to mention available at every grocery store and fast food joint on the planet. Screw providing any alternative to Whoppers, because there is no such thing as progress in incremental steps, is there?
  23. I thought most commercial frozen chicken breasts were brined?
  24. Actually, my kids would eat it, but it means a special trip because our regular grocery store doesn't carry figs. And they don't have a drive-through.
  25. You won't get any from me. My sister recently asked me "What is it about being pregnant that makes everyone assume you're a complete idiot?"
