  1. I was wondering if anyone would mention Limelight. What a strange place.
  2. That wasn't quite what I meant, but thanks. Welcome to eGullet.
  3. Maybe you folks could PM?
  4. Same difference. Sorry to hear Pied is no more, as I spent many many late nights there once upon a time. Eggs benedict was the only thing worth ordering then, and apparently that still holds at the new place.
  5. Miracle Whip is not cheaper than mayonnaise. I use it to make several things, recipes from my Okie grandmother. I could make them with homemade mayo, lovingly hand whipped with olive oil and farm fresh eggs, but then they wouldn't taste the way my grandmother's did. She is gone, and her recipes are what I have from her, and I will continue to make them the way she did. Whether the dishes "are good" or just "taste good" will not be part of the equation.
  6. Carnitas no rice pinto beans medium salsa guacamole Mmmmmmmmm. Sodium. I think we must have been their DC base, Don. And I was soundly ridiculed for mail-ordering coffee.
  7. Ethiopian restauranteurs love kids. Even at 15 and 11 they still draw excellent service to the table, when they were 6 and 10 they got us treated like royalty. I have found that our kids are especially welcomed at the Chinese, Thai, and Indian places we frequent. The kids have never had Ethiopian food but I bet they would get a kick out of eating with their hands.
  8. Yeah, that's the ticket! And while we're at it, please add men who don't trim their toenails to that list, because that grosses me out. No sandals!
  9. It? Make sure it behaves?
  10. We will be in Austin that weekend. Maybe next time.
  11. Who can we credit for this? Do we really think this is an appropriate response to a child?
  12. Yes, but unkempt people don't give me hives, or an asthma attack. Dogs and cats do.
  13. Thanks for asking. We had an OK brunch at Tower Oaks. Mrs Bilrus is right, it's a glorified Clyde's, but the food was competent. The highlight was definitely the oysters which were delicious. The space is HUGE, but subdivided nicely and it's surrounded by woods. My complaint was the service. It was, shall we say, leisurely. Which is fine sometimes but not when dining with a 2 year old. It took so long that Emma nearly had a meltdown and she's normally pretty patient.
  14. It's on my calendar, Monica.
  15. Maybe. My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII, so perhaps he brought it back from somewhere. He's passed on and she has Alzheimer's so I can't ask either of them, but maybe it's in their letters somewhere. I have those. It's the one thing of hers that I asked for in her will. Heather, "spoon rings" were very popular at NY/NJ flea markets and craft shows in the early-mid 70-s..just fyi. Interesting. I know she's had hers since the 50's, and they lived in New England. Maybe it was a fad that slowly worked its way south.
  16. That's only in the swanky upstairs dining room.

    Cooking Tunes!

If I have a lot of food to crank out, like a holiday meal or a party I almost always reach for Talking Heads' Remain In Light. The Clash London Calling works too. Both reflect an edgy sense of urgency that keeps me on task. Edit: Does anyone else like to sing while cooking?
  18. I'll say this for Whole Foods (at least the one I shop) the produce folks know their veggies. They're all very knowledgable. And the cashiers don't seem to have a problem identifying anything either.
  19. No way! I knew he was very ill and had heard from a regular that he had passed. I may have to visit him at Blackie's. I owe him one that I can never repay because he introduced me to my husband. You just cheered me up immensely. Back on food - it will be interesting to see what they do to the menu, and how it flies with the crowd in the downstairs bar. Glad I cheered you up. I am one of the crowd dowstairs. So was I.

  22. My grandmother has had a ring made from the handle of an old silver spoon for as long as I can remember. No idea where she got it but it looks pretty neat.
  23. The coolest thing about the Childe was Rodney, the downstairs bartender, now deceased.
  24. Joe, as the one who started this thread, that was not part of the discussion. The human interest story was the goal, and I'm grateful to our intrepid Malawry and hannnah for checking it out.
  25. My mother still has a potato print (cut potato in half, incise a design, dip in paint, press) that I made for her when I was five. My daughter loves making macaroni necklaces.
