  1. The gin selection at New Heights is unrivaled. I could wish for a more extensive cocktail list, but I will be sipping a lot of 209 and Fever Tree bitter lemon this summer. The food is more than worthy of consideration, and the bar specials are an excellent value.
  2. Red Sage closed last (?) year. Hitching Post is great, when they are on, but service can be very slow.
  3. This is a generalization, but we are a generation of latchkey kids. I learned to cook not because my mom stayed home, but because she didn't and it was a way I could help. My husband learned to cook for the same reasons. Also, takeout was not as common back in the 70's, and there were far fewer convenience foods. Gen Y is probably even less likely to learn to cook It's probably not PC or enlightened, or feminist to say so, but guys that cook are hot. Guys that do the dishes are even hotter.
  4. That may be true if it's a complete stranger, however I suspect being an old, uptight, East Coast straight white guy colors your attitude.
  5. I went to culinary school twenty years ago. If you didn't move when someone said "behind you" or "hot stuff" you might've got your ass smacked - male or female. It was a different time. If I've got a blazing hot pan and it's too noisy to hear, then chances are pretty good that you're going to get touched. I thought hathor's story was sweet. I would not have been offended if it happened to me. At places where I'm a regular it's not unusual for me to get a hug or a kiss on the cheek when I come in.
  6. The Ball Blue Book is a great place to start. Canning and Preserving for Dummies helped me too. For more advanced flavors Fine Preserving is wonderful; it's out of print but can still be found on the web. If you're interested in more than jam, a long-departed eG member recommended The Joy of Pickling. It's been a treasure. I, too, check every year on the web about processing times, and adjust old recipes accordingly.
  7. I love it in a G&T, but find it depends on the gin, and the tonic. I've had good results with Fever Tree tonic, which is much less sweet than, say, Canada Dry, and a gin like Zuidam or Broker's. Citadelle is too flowery, Damrak is too rich, and Hendrick's didn't work at all.
  8. I would add Acadiana, and PS7's to Busboy's list. Both are pretty good, and fairly close to the convention center.
  9. (my emphasis) 2-3 hours a day, how many times a week? I'm curious - do you have kids? That's a lot of time.I try to walk everywhere, and watch my portions, but to a great extent my weight is what it is since I don't have a metabolism anymore (complete thyroidectomy and I-131 treatment 2 years ago). We eat lots of fruit and veg, and fish. I have found that a good way for me to not overeat at restaurants is to avoid tasting menus.
  10. I would agree with Busboy on the cuisine, and note that the chef at Vidalia buys from local producers whenever possible.
  11. Here's Re-Ment's US website. It's linked to the map of stores that carry Re-Ment products. I have the Smores set! It has lots of small parts: the stove itself consists of 4 components. Did you notice that one of the smores has a bite taken out of it? ← Thanks! Various sets and partial sets are available on eBay.
  12. I must have the S'Mores. Can I order these online? Or get them in the US?
  13. In for Saturday. I have to figure out the rest of the weekend.
  14. Thanks, Heather I'll try to get this sewn up asap, so people can start making their lodging and transportation arrangements. =R= ← You rock. Also, it's probably just me, no +1.
  15. Norwegian Cruise Lines didn't allow this.
  16. I was looking for what part of town might be the most convenient. I'll keep checking the thread.
  17. We took a family cruise around the Hawaiian islands last March on the Pride of America (Norwegian Cruise Line). The food was pretty dreadful, even at the places that charged extra, and watching already overweight people load their buffet plates with junk was very depressing. NCL was not our choice, and if we ever take another cruise we will look into a different line.
  18. Any suggestions on where to stay?
  19. Citadelle gin, St. Germaine, and Fever Tree tonic. Really hitting the spot right now.
  20. My kids love Jaleo & Zaytinya, both are reasonably close to the Smithsonian Museums. Brasserie Beck is another favorite.
  21. I would recommend reservations, and New Heights doesn't do lunch.
  22. Be warned that CityZen is very out of the way - the cab might cost more than the bar menu.New Heights, and Vidalia gets the thumbs up, and I concur that the Diner is not worth seeking out. Of the recent crop of new bistros, I would choose Brasserie Beck over Central. Isn't Bistro Napoleon closed?
  23. The Shorters will try to be there. Right now either of the August dates works. We may or may not bring the kids.
  24. On what grounds could you press charges?Slinking out after stiffing the waiter accomplishes nothing. Talk to the manager & owner and ask that they speak to the offending parties, or ask to be moved to a different table. Let them know that you had a bad time, and why. If they are at all good at what they do, the management will know that they need to see to the comfort of all their guests, not just the big groups.
  25. In my brief search of MedLine, nothing jumped out at me although it seemed pretty clear that the consensus is that breast-feeding, while it may or may not actively prevent food allergies, does remove one potential source of common allergens--cow's milk from formula. My daughter became allergic to cow's milk through my breast milk. I had to give up milk, ice cream, etc., while nursing. Casein and whey turn up in the most unlikely places.I'd eat whatever you can stomach for the first three months and take your prenatal vitamins. After that, just try to eat a balanced diet and avoid the things your doctor says to avoid (undercooked meat, etc.). What you eat while pregnant most likely won't have any bearing on your child's palate. ETA: and congratulations!
