  1. ROTFLMAO!!!! God Almighty man are you drunk???
  2. Having lived within a 10 minute walk of the Market since it's inception I've seen it slowly go downhill and I honestly don't think there's any solution that will bring back the energy and novelty that permeated the place back in the 80's. The Green Grocers on W Broadway have wiped the floor with GI Market Merchants and as mentioned many others are in the game as well. Market aside the Island as a whole is shabbily run-the original theme of marine based businesses long ago gave way to tourist tat and worse.
  3. That place was a Dutch deli as I recall-it also was said to have an excellent licorice selection. Given my predilection I never darkened their door and the place passed from existence in the mid to late 70's.
  4. Not recently but a year ago I was in Bush Airport in Houston and was pleasantly surprised to find edibles on offer in the new wing. Nothing overwhelming but appealing Green Salads and a well made veggie Pizza really helped put me on track after a flight from Bogotá and a long wait in the older part of the building. Considering the horrors I had glimpsed on another place's menu-fried Caesar Salad - I was pleased to find a civilised option that I hadn't been in expecting in deepest darkest Tejas.
  5. Terra's are fesh and well made but not in any way exceptional.
  6. The original question was about the handling of the fish-I'd say the customer missed out on a wondeful dinner. As well I've been laid low in many countries but the worst I ever had was 3 weeks of agony followed by 6 month stint of absolute misery that came from a 'darling place' right here in Vancouver-by-the-sea.
  7. Many long years ago I was a callow lad making Caesar salad in a local Community College Dining Room-raw egg and all. Never killed anyone although the Parmesan came out of a cardboard container already grated-if you could stomach that crud you could eat anything.
  8. Does anyone here live near a DAISO Japanese Department Store? It's a 100¥ place-nothing for more than-you guessed it-100¥ (allegedly). There's one in Richmond-a suburb of Vancouver that has a large Chinese population-and these stores are said to be 'all the rage' in Japan. Some decent deals on ceramic ware custom made in China and a lot of the same old/same old-I suppose if I lived closer I'd check it out more often.
  9. Sorry to hear about Rubina Tandoor but the building is old and the kitchen was probably a trial to work in every day. Managed to catch the street food festival last year-it was 'ok' but lacked the tang of diesel, the roar of traffic and the lowing of wandering cattle. Happy to report that All India Foods buffet is still an excellent value.Dragged a friend who lives nearby in Oakridge into All India for lunch last week-he was chagrined that he hadn't eaten there more often-tasty food/attentive service/cold Kingfishers.
  10. That I have not seen for many a long year-nor heard tell of.....
  11. If you're heading 'offshore' in your search for a worthy loaf and are within striking distance of Pender Island the Saturday Farmer's Market features ambrosial bread in a wood burning oven. Made by a local farmer of Italian origin it's one of the best breads I've ever eaten anywhere and is well worth searching out.

Chunk it up and throw it on a smoky fire skin side down-adding a handful of Pine needles or Cedar branches at the same time produces a unique and delicious product. As you can imagine it cooks in no time you must be standing in front of the Barbie at all times-once you see the fat start to bubble up out of the fish it's done.
  13. Hoisin sauce/heated/cut with water and a few tablespoons of peanut butter added makes a tasty dipping sauce. The key to tight rolls is to have the paper quite damp and not to be timid! An easy vegetarian version is to use steamed carrot sticks-lovely with the aforementioned basil leaf.
  14. To my taste a Bialy is just a Bagel without the hole. Growing up on Eastern European cooking I have to say that Solly's food is stodge of the most bland and undistinguished variety. Also the management directed abuse of Staff in the Broadway location-screaming/shouting/belittling in front of customers (on more than 2 occasions) means I'll never darken their door again. It's one thing to pay staff minimum wage for relatively simple work-to abuse them publicly is IMO unforgivable.
  15. Indeed! I've been to the Hotel where the Los Hermanos Sandini developed their unique ensalada. The neighbourhood had changed and not for the better-this was in '84.

    Lox

Here in British Columbia-home of monstrous runs of all 6 species-Lox is Cold Smoked Salmon. The Loxmania recipe is one way to do things but isn't at all to my taste-no one who followed that abbreviated mishmash of instructions would ever touch a fish of mine. Gravlax is just cured fish.Great on the barbie.

I agree with Melissa that Gravlax is easier and just as versatile. I disagree with the link as posted one critical point however- Sockeye has the highest oil content not Spring Salmon. Roejimmy-how are you going to source enough Wild Salmon to feed your operation? The farmed mush on the market won't make a presentable product because it's well....mushy Click Here for a Gravlax making option (not affiliated)
  18. Thanks for that but I did study History in High School and remember some of what the Treaty of Versailles was about-it was a humourous/ironic remark- note that I'm a Canadian. As to 'happier times' that's debatable. Today's modern Cubans have little use for the colonial past-some sad exiles in North America and Spain still cling to the past true-what else do they have?

    Avocado Shake

LOL! I've been seeing those marketed as 'low fat' Avocados-a contradiction terms if ever there was one. Maybe not though those 'other ones' do have less oil-which equated to an insipid taste and dreadful texture-a total waste of money at any price IMO.

    Avocado Shake

I may have posted about this before-the apparent disparity between Avocado prices in different US cities and Canada. The standard price I see everywhere in Vancouver for medium sized Hass Avocado is $C0.69. I regularly buy 2 for $C1.00! Why are prices so much higher in the USA? These are Mexican Avocados from Tanticaro Michoacan trucked right through the USA. Someone somewhere in the USA has the market sewn right up and is making tremendous profits.
  21. Don't be silly! That makes as much sense as a Cuban restaurant called something like 'Versailles'! Oops-there already is one-in California of course
  22. Frozen peanut butter and jam sandwich dipped in Red Rose bag tea. As a boy I learned to love tea for it's revitalising qualities and many a time out ice fishing with my Father a hearty sandwich and tea lunch kept me from succumbing to the Northern Ontario cold.
  23. Thanks for the link to Island Wineries-seems it was lost here sometime back. I note that Venturi-Schulze is once again 'marching to it's own drummer' and hasn't joined the local association. I was once a 'big fan' of theirs but some distinctly oddball decisions in terms of marketing/pricing mean I've lost interest this past decade or so.
  24. Looking over some old bookmarks I ran across this link for Engeler Farm in The Cowichan Valley. I realise I've driven by it a few times going to/coming from Port Renfrew but have never stopped. There's a lot to see Food/Wine wise in that 'hood these days-more than ever before.
  25. In Ling's defence-everybody has to live somewhere
