Before my Dad and them had proper refrigeration and freezing. They used to just let meat hang in the shed all winter (mostly deer), cutting off some as needed. I wanted that, but then I met people. Love is toxic and it'll destroy your dreams.

They may or may not be part of the minnow family, which is huge. Carp are a member of the minnow family. But yeah, they "look" like an oily saltwater fish.

This totally sucks! Most pantries in my area are church hosted so there's no rent, but there is occasionally an issue with finding enough help. My 82 year old aunt retired last month after running a local pantry for 20 years.

In terms of SNAP, I've penciled things out...I'm fine. Things definitely aren't as good as they were a year ago and I do worry...inflation probably won't level-out anytime soon. I do still have a bit of surplus of SNAP funds at the end of the month. That is due to New York pumping funds into the program, but I don't know how long that will last. I refuse to feel guilty for indulging in fancier foods occasionally. I pride myself in working hard to make every penny go as far as possible on good food.

Thanks for caring...I'm sure I'll survive. I may move this to the "How are you doing?" thread because there's related stuff going on.

I'm doing okay with SNAP, but as a whole things are a disaster for me. SNAP is a needs based program that's based on your income. In short, and in my case. SSI is my main source of income and used to pay part of my food bill. Problem is, that SSI is a disaster that hasn't been much updated since it started in 1972. I live well below the poverty level. This is a very serious problem, and not the right way to treat disabled folks. SSI and SNAP don't begin to keep up with inflation. The way things work, when my SSI goes up a little at the first of the year, my SNAP goes down!!! Well, I haven't got a lot of years left to worry about it. And so it goes...

Brings a tear to my eye. My Grandma Brown made excellent coconut cake. Oh, the memories.

Welcome, Ray! Are you still near Ithaca? I live in Elmira Heights.

"The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookery. An encyclopedic handbook for the homemaker covering foods and beverages - their purchase, preparation and service." Hardcover book with 1329 pages, published by Wm. H. Wise & Co. It's dated, but there's nothing else like it. All of Jacques Pepin's books! Modernist Cuisine 😁

I have the book.

GASP! Drama aside, there is a lot of good information there that I hope can be preserved. I've followed the following thread for years! FINALLY... a real, honest-to-Hashem method for making real lower east side SALT FERMENTED KOSHER DILL PICKLES, as directed by Moe, a 90+ year old former pickle master
