    Breakfast 2020!

Onigirazu with a butter- and soy sauce basted fried egg.
  2. Damn. I really wanted this book but when I tried to buy it Amazon told me I already owned it.
  3. One of our favourite restaurants is Celadon House. It has been off-limits since Covid because although it did some takeout it was only after 4 PM. However, recently they have resumed lunch service on Fridays only. I desperately wanted their mushrooms which are only on the dinner menu and wondered if we would be lucky enough to be able to get those. When I called I was informed that anything on the dinner menu is available at lunchtime. My sigh of relief must have been audible for miles. t The mushrooms to die for. Hunan dumplings Egg-rolls as we remember them to be. Substantial. There was also some calamari that managed to evade the camera. My plate with the calamari on the lower right hand side. Kerry’s plate. It was all so very good and there is still enough for another meal in my refrigerator.
  4. I’m very curious about this. Perhaps you could talk some more about it. I have recently rediscovered corned beef in the can. This sounds quite good.
  5. That thing we all aspire to and only the most accomplished of us actually put into practice.

    Lunch 2020

Kimchi fried rice with canned salmon because.
  7. I hear her voice come through loud and clear. I don’t really expect to do much cooking from this book (just physical challenges — nothing to do the recipes) but I do know that I will enjoy reading it and probably learn quite a lot.
  8. I downloaded a Kindle sample and I can definitely see why you would be excited about this book!
  9. Breakfast this morning was one of the “sausage rolls” from The Hamilton Pie Company. From my freezer. Heated through. Cross-section. For a roll filled with beef rather than pork I found this quite passable. The beef could have tolerated a little more seasoning. Pastry was very good. It was not quite puff pastry but had a pleasant bite to it and was moderately flaky.
  10. @Kerry Beal took time out from her busy day to attend to a couple of things that will make my life a little more exciting over the next few days or weeks. One of the things she did was to restock my freezer so I can spend more time posting on this topic! these pies from Denninger‘s do not need to be frozen. They have a very long refrigerated shelf life. I have already sampled the chicken curry pie from here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Those are beef sausage rolls in the top photograph. Quite the selection. (But I’m having a hard time forgiving her for eating a Portuguese custard tart as she drove to my place and didn’t bring me one!)
  11. From my freezer. Baked. Innards. First the good: it is obvious from the photographs that this was juicy and, not so obvious, it was also very tender. But: the juiciness led to very a pasty, horrible bottom crust. The other serious objection I had to this pie was that when I broke into it the aroma of stale beer was quite off-putting. My guess is that instead of adding whatever beer/ale was being used early in the game to burn off the alcohol, it was simply slopped in before closing up the pie. That’s my theory. Once the smell dissipated it was difficult to detect any related flavor. Will not be repeating this experience intentionally.
  12. Wow. I’m guessing it must be miso. But I might be willing to give up my access to miso if I had your access to such a variety of mushrooms and fresh vegetables without end. Oh, and fruits that I can only dream about.
  13. Yup. Even one is one too many.
  14. Thank you for a fun read. A cure for flatulence, really? Won’t stop me eating Digestives.
  15. Tried so very hard to resist. Honest. But I now have the Kindle version.
  16. Certainly looks more appetizing than the rather bland one I had.
  17. I love onions. I love them just about anyway you can imagine. When I came across this recipe from Flavour that called for only three ingredients, I knew I had to see if I could make it. Even served over some not very exciting squishy white bread these were tasty.
  18. More here on the name of the restaurant. Click. I’m still not very convinced.
  19. All I could think of when I read about these bacon-scented masks was how many facial sutures might be needed when there were dogs in the vicinity. I am definitely going to give them a miss.
  20. I hope to enjoy your workout vicariously. It occurred to me as I read the sample and checked out a few recipes through Google that if I were younger I might take the opportunity to dump my pantry and start afresh. I would challenge myself to play with just those 20 ingredients listed and some nice vegetables.
  21. Today, @Kerry Bealpicked up lunch from a Korean restaurant, The Owl of Minerva. We shared the eggroll. I had the pork bone soup with some rice and banchan (pickled cucumber). Kerry enjoyed the kimchi soup. I have never understood why a Korean restaurant is called The Owl of Minerva. Even after a little bit of digging I still don’t understand but I will share with you this from the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy: A traditional symbol of wisdom, most famously invoked in Hegel's remark at the end of the Preface to the Philosophy of Right: ‘when philosophy paints its grey in grey, then has a shape of life grown old. The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the coming of the dusk.’ Hegel means that the kinds of self-conscious reflection making up philosophy can occur only when a way of life is sufficiently mature to be already passing, but the doctrine neglects the fact that selfconsciousness and reflection co-exist with activity. For example, an active social and political movement will co-exist with reflection on the categories within which it frames its position. uh?
  22. From the freezer from the oven The innards. Bland, boring. This one didn’t even leave me feeling satisfied in terms of sufficient food. Usually one of these pies meets my requirements as a full meal. This one seemed to contain very little in terms of chicken or anything else for that matter. Very disappointing.

    Breakfast 2020!

I judge it one of my favourite comfort meals. Eggs and chips what could be better?
