    Mushroom Bread Pudding

Wow, thank you. Ok, going to give it a try and will report back.

    Mushroom Bread Pudding

Yes I do like it custardy, and I was thinking of the egg-milk combo.

    Mushroom Bread Pudding

Oh wow, that sounds great but unfortunately I wanted to do this tonight to take advantage of the bread I have. However if you do get the time, I would love to try out that recipe at a later date.
  4. I have some leftover challah-like bread and a large amount of dried shitake mushrooms so....I'm looking to make a mushroom bread pudding. Anyone have a great recipe that you've tried?

    favorite bottled beers

I've only had their basic "Scottish Ale," but that was really neat. Oh don't get Bellhaven Ale and Bellhaven St Andrews Ale confused. They are two very different ales and the former is pretty vile in my opinion.

    favorite bottled beers

Bellhaven St Andrew's Ale has been my favorite for the last couple of years now. It's hard to find in Manhattan, have only found it at dba, St Andrews bar and that beer shop on 23rd and 10th. I have to say in general that I haven't met a Scottish ale that I didn't like.

    Kabab Café

The little square pastries were wonderful; I think Ali said the fat was used in both the pastry and the stuffing -- was it the fat from the udder? Yes, rendered fat from the udder. I did love those little pastries too.

Were you there last night or just a fly on the wall?!

    Kabab Café

    There were 3 wines?
  10. But that doesn't answer my question, was I given the wrong item?

    Kabab Café

Okay, one other addition. I wasn't sure if it was "legal" to serve so I was hesitant to post that we had udder. But I am assured by The Woman in Exile that it is ok... The udder was the last in this succession of unusual meats. At this point I could've easily slipped into a coma. I don't know, it didn't really excite me like the veal cheeks or sweetbreads did. I thought it was chewy and lacked flavor. I'm of course glad I tried it though.

    Kabab Café

Dinner at Kabab Cafe with 3 other eGers, which was even more of a revelation than usual. The dishes: Sweat breads--the second time I've had them served by Ali and I don't know what he did differently but they were incredible. Veal cheeks with rice, beans and an onion/vinaigrette concoction that included lips?? Is this correct?--The first time I had beef cheeks just with rice. Ali has perfected this dish, it was perhaps one of the best things I've had by him. Sauteed brains with lime Veal Tongue Veal pizzle served in a cream (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) sauce with sauteed escarole--It was not revealed to us what we had eaten til we finished. Perhaps Ali thought that we'd be squeamish about eating such an organ? Anyway before I knew what it was, I thought the consistency was a cross between squid and shrimp. Very chewy and muscle-like. Cow foot over rice--others at the table loved this but I did not. Tripe (dont know what animal). I'm not usually a fan of tripe but I could stomach this. Dessert: home made yogurt cheese with halavah, apples, and honey cake.
  13. For those of us who don't have the capability of grilling in this 7 degree below weather .... at what oven temp should I bake the chicken?
  14. El Manara also has just about the best (consistent) version of baba that I've found. Get some to go.
  15. Ah! In NYC (Queens or Manhattan preferred) where exactly do you find them, Suvir?
  16. Simon-- If one were to be on the lookout for a Kashmiri chili, what should they be looking for? "Sara"
  17. Two of my favorite sausage places in Manhattan are: Faicco's Pork Store, 260 Bleecker. In particular the pork/cheese/parsley sausage is great. Salumeria Biellese, 9th avenue between 28th Salumeria Biellese has so many different kinds of home made sausages, and the selection changes daily. They supply many high end restaurants...
  18. Showcasing the guanciale without burying it among other intense flavors is exactly what I'm aiming for. I got it from Salumeria Biellese -- 376 Ninth Avenue in NYC.
  19. I've got about a 1/2 lb and I'm looking for the best way to maximize this potential delicious experience.
  20. Karam also makes a smokin' smokey baba ganouj. However from your description it sounds like Alfanoose is EXACTLY what you want. They'll ask (with good reason) if you want garlic and hot sauce. Yes yes yes -- do it even though you'll have essence de garlic coming out of your pores for the next 24 hours.
