I have not read the entire thread carefully. I don't know if this has been discussed. With a burner like this, a powerful exhaust fan is not enough. You must have a very good grease filter as well. At such high temperature, oil can evaporate just like water and condense inside the duct work. That can create a mess and fire hazard. Even with a good filter, oil still condenses. The duct system should be serviceable without having to demolish your kitchen. There is no exhaust fan powerful enough to prevent oil splatter. You know all surfaces around the burner should be washable. You also know that atomized oil or oil vapor can explode or flame violently. dcarch

"I disagree with generators and inverters -- it's not going to help much for the basic necessities which are: 1) Breathable atmosphere 2) Water 3) Shelter 4) Food" " I am not sure the reasons for your disagreement. Generator and inverter are not to replace all the other meassures which have been mentioned. My 2,500 watt generator costed me $250 dollars, and inverter $50.00. The additional flexibilities during an emergency is immense. BTW, there is a very simple and inexpensive way to power up your house with a generator without major investment. dcarch

Many temperature controllers use mechanical relays. Mechanical relays have two positions, i.e. normally on and normally off. You can use the off position to trigger a second temperature controller with a different cooking program. dcarch

A few thoughts: 1. There is no such thing as ventless heater. All combustion depletes oxygen. "ventless" heater have a sensor to sense oxygen level to shut down the unit. I wopuld not have my family's life depend on a little sensor. 2. If you don't have a generator, at least get an inverter. They are so inexpensive. You can plug into your car, and run the engine for many hour to power up phones, tvs, computers, recharge cell phones, lights, pumps and thermostat for you heating system, etc. dcarch

Don't flash your toilets. The water in the tanks is very clean, and will keep you alive for many days. dcarch

"-----So we were always told to have your emergency survival kit in whichever room you planned to run to. " During an earthquake, you sdhould never run to any other room. FEMA: "---Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave." dcarch

Remember gypsy moths? Killer bees? Asian carps? Whenever a foriegn life form is artificially introduced in a new environment, you never know what the outcome is going to be. I have this horrifying (but delicious) nightmare. Every garden is infected with truffles, we are drowning in truffles, truffles everywhere ----- all the wooded areas have this overwhelming truffle smell--------- dcarch :-)

“----My centrifuge was clean inside, and with a wipe down with a bleach soaked rag and soaking the buckets in the same, it's been fine. Your food will most likely be in test tubes, plastic containers you've bought (like me) or heat sealed bags (like Cooking Issues), so contamination will be highly unlikely.---“ My comment was responding to the above. I was very concerned that is not good enough. I guess I was a little too breif in my response. The materials, such as high corrosion resistant stainless steel, while cannot be easily contaminated by normal agents and can be cleaned by the above method, however, if the equipment was used for radioactive material, that would be highly questionable. I was involved with the Rockefeller University Department of Comparative Pathology. There they have many ultra centrifuges in use for radioactive type of materials for research. I just visited Regeneron’s brand new major research laboratory here in NY. I have seen what they are using some of their centrifuges. I would be very careful in using some of these equipment for food. dcarch

"--I would never assume that! I've used lab centrifuges, cleaned up dirty rotors, and after a spill of a radioactive liquid in one--usually from a failure of a tube or bottle placed into the rotor--that cleaning is really instructive, because it may feel clean and look clean but the geiger counter tells you there's still stuff left on it. These were not rotors being used with stuff that would make the rotor radioactive, just biological samples with very low-level radioactivity in them that would sometimes be very very hard to clean off.--" Isn't that what I said? dcarch
