The consensus seems to be that the blade grinder is a much better idea at this price point and the KitchenAid sounds like a good choice. I wish that there were some more reviews of the Cuisinart blade grinder because it seems very similar to the KitchenAid but possibly a bit of an improvement. Maybe I'll see if there's a store where I can take a look at both of them.

My money's on Homer. But don't forget to invite Bluto (John Belushi) from Animal House.

Which bus goes there? I'm NOT taking the ferry... Oh, and if the Pizza Club is going to be a serious undertaking, the Staten Island pizzerias will have to be on the agenda so you'll have to figure a way to get here! And once the Sri Lankan Club get going, well what's supposedly the best Sri Lankan in the tri-state area is a few blocks from my home, and as for the Polish Club, we've got a Polish place that's in contention, and as part of the rounds of the Mexican Club, there's a taqueria that suppposedly ranks right up there too. Not to mention the Italian Ices Club. How could it complete its research without a visit to Ralph's Famous Italian Ices to see how it ranks? (I've heard rumors of good non-Wendy's burgers out here too, but I'm not sure if I believe 'em anymore after vicariously and surreptitiously joining the Burger Club.)

Which bus goes there? I'm NOT taking the ferry... To make it easier here's the list of the Staten Island locations. BTW, that accident, like a 100 year storm, was a 100 year accident. It was the first and only fatal accident in the ferry's 98 year municipal history. So it should be safe again until about the year 2100 or so.

We'd be happy to have you join out shifty...er, shifting group. The more, the merrier! We haven't decided on our next meeting yet, but I know we're waiting on a suggestion from one of London Burger Club members who will be in town in a few weeks. We'd like to plan a meeting when she can join us. I think the last tentaive suggestion was for Tuesday Nov. 25. But maybe we'll meet again before then? Elyse? Anyone? I thought y'all were heading over to a Staten Island Wendy's to see if they have those automatic change-chute thingies.

It's a thermometer held by me. That makes more sense because it would have been an awfully pale pickle (on a fork.)

She's holding a thermometer. Who you callin' shifty?

The burger on the designer scale wrapped in plastic is pretty funny. It looks like it belongs in a chic art gallery. (Is that a postal scale? It's too small to be a people scale, unless that's a really big burger.) What is the ominous black thingy being inserted into the burger in the next picture? Hamburger Gothic is a classsic (of course!) I don't see E=bc² on the wall The crayons do not look like they're artisanal I wanna see pics of the rest of the nefarious burger gang What are the three rules of the burger club again? May I have extra salt on my fries? That ominous black thingie was one of the 27 thermometers Suzanne F brought with her. That was also her designer scale (which you can see ForkandPen holding in Burger Gothic. The fries were delicious. I'll be making a special trip back just for those! "I'd like and order of fries with some fries on the side, please. And some fries for dessert." And then a trip across the street for that spicey hot chocolate. I made brownies last night (the standard Baker's Chocolate recipe) and threw in a little cinnamon and cayenne to see if they'd mimic the flavor of that hot chocolate. Pretty close! I wanted to get a few pics of people shoving the burgers into their mouths, with globs of ketchup on their chins, etc. but I was too engaged in the lively conversation to remember to snap pics. I'll remember next time. Although, everyone seemed to want to 'approve' the pics beforehand, so I doubt any really good ones will ever get posted here. Unless, as VP of Monkeywrenching, I decide to give myself veto power over the approval process. Funny, the scale in the American Gothic pic didn't register because it's transparent. Speaking of which, what's on Ms. American Gothic's fork? I was assuming it's a pickle slice, but now everything's in doubt. I wanted to see pics of the attending shifty, er shifting members. I find the explanation of why there are no other nefarious bc member pics rather shifty. Something clandestine must have going down and I bet that the crayons were somehow involved.

I'd suggest saying exactly that in response to those types of comments because it is an appropriate and useful response. It should should put an end to those comments without being rude, abusive, or provocative; and hopefully forestalling either further nasty interaction or awkward, bitter silence. If they persist repeat the same phrase. If they still persist, well then you might want to reconsider whether or not you'd want to dine with said person again. Ditto. It's really none of his business regardless of who pays the bill. A snarky response might be, "You're welcome to take my leftovers home in a doggy bag." A slightly less snarky response might be "I'm sorry that you have a problem with my eating habits but I'd rather that you make those inane, inappropriate comments behind my back if you feel compelled to pass judgement and blather on about something that's none of your fucking business" There's also a way to respond non-snarkily, but I can't think of it offhand because his behavior is so obnoxious that it brings out the snarkiness in me.

That's just it, if there's buzz and the national press picks it up they'll get publicity they've never had. Heck, I never heard of the company or the brand and I know everything.

Has anyone ever visited the pizzeria in Perth Amboy that was ignominiously shut down by the city while there was a campaign to save it? It supposedly had exemplary pizza. I read about it just about when they closed it, sometime this summer.
-
It would be neat if we had someone with the pr skills to turn it into a "stunt" that the mainstream press picks up and see how far we can go with this.
-
Yes, that is scandalous behavior for the president of the Burger Club, n'est-ce pas? And even if it isn't the tabloids will turn it into one! (But it is! )
-
I think that the burger club is going to have to explore the culinary delights of the Staten Island's Wendy's. BTW, isn't Elyse in a Wendy's a scandal on the order of, say Rush L. abusing drugs or (insert your favorite scandalous behavior by the famous here)???????????
-
Some places have a neo-computerized version of those. I'm pretty sure that Wendy's does.
-
Yea, its in the www box....I figured it was just best to link it there and if people wanted to check it out they would.... I suspect that Elyse is suggesting that people are unaware of the WWW button and that it couldn't hurt to have The CULINARY DETECTIVE as a signature.

Just like the Denino's and Ralph's Ices combo, no?
-
Artisanal? None of that mass produced corporate Crayola crap, I hope!

FWIW, I would have sworn that I saw another recent mention of his column, I thought I was earlier in this thread but looking back I see that's the first mention here at least.

Spiritos Restaurant 714 3rd Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07202 (908) 351-5414 Is this it? If so, it's awful close to Staten Island. Between SI and the airport during those pick up/drop off runs. Do they sell slices? BTW, what is "Elizabeth's "Burg" section?"
-
Hmmm....this is kinda like the carrot and the stick. Or is that "the invitation and the insult?" Or "the hamburger and the taunt?" Chris mentioned his column.

Yes, NYC. I'm thinking about joining the Burger Club but I'd have to come out of my cave first and I'm not sure I'm ready to yet. Big baby. Last chance for tomorrow...! I've been called worse. And resisted greater temptations than a good hamburger. Er, to tell the truth, I'm not sure about the latter. Maybe next round..............
