In the Fairfax model, is that low-lying section in the front the parking garage? Do you know how Wegmans finances these mega-buildings? Isn't it difficult for privately-held companies to get that kind of financing?

So if one ordered a value meal and didn't super-size or customize there wouldn't be any HIYWs? I wonder how well it works, thinking that visual reminders ostensibly lose their value with familiarity (i.e. the note taped to the front door saying "remember to take lunch" that becomes forgotten after a week or two.)
-
Interesting. So much for my corporate philosophy conspiracy theory. But I'm not sure if I follow the logic of the use of HIYW. Are you saying that the HIYW is there because each of those items is "customized?" I don't understand from looking at the ticket what is "customized."

I visited Staunton a few years ago and I'd say it's a must visit for anyone into historic buildings or really neat old towns. Way cool. The history of Staunton I'd say to make sure to check out the still-operating railroad station. The old station was renovated and is now a restaurant (don't know anything about the food) with an amazing bar that was saved from a demolished hotel. The Depot Grille

Burger King is all about the subliminal (blatant?) reinforcement of the mass delusional fantasy that we are all unique individuals individually choosing and consuming our uniquely chosen individual choices. HAVE IT YOUR WAY. As you put it so eloquently, "That your way is the default way does not make it any less yours." HAVE IT YOUR WAY. After all, if the choice is between ummm, BK and McC, is there really any choice? HAVE IT YOUR WAY. That's probably why it's so important to their corporate mantra to chant "There are 1,537 possible ways for a customer to order a WHOPPER® sandwich. (If you cut it in half, the number doubles!)" HAVE IT YOUR WAY. We're providing the American consumer with literally thousands of choices! HAVE IT YOUR WAY. BK is all about uniquely individual equality. HAVE IT YOUR WAY. Your way is the default way is a uniquely individual way. HAVE IT YOUR WAY! I do feel lucky that I've gotten enough education and perspective to observe both with amusement and fright as I watch corporations get ever better skilled at marketing fantasies of uniqueness and individualism to consumers. Edit: As I'm finishing up my little diatribe I'm thinking: "Have it your way" was once a truly meaningful point of differentiation because the individualization was emphasized, not the slogan. But if the phrase is repeated ad nauseum as you note when the vast majority of the choices are the default and so few people are cognizant of the possibility of individualization that it's virtually an insider's secret, well then they truly have suceeded in marketing the fantasy of (some modicum of) individualization while selling just the opposite. (Am I just repeating the same thing in different words? It's awful late and I'm neither as good a writer nor as intelligent as I'd like to be! In the morning when I wake up, roll over, and see the words that I slept with night before I'll probably be appalled. Oh well, I think there's a point in here somewhere.)

Mr. Clarkbar I'm pretty sure that 3 Musketeers are distributed nationally in the US. 3 MUSKETEERS® Product Locator - US only

"off the broiler" "cut in half" Just to show you how these things actually appear in the POS printout: http://www.egullet.com/imgs/hiyw.jpg I was going to ask what HIYW was but then when I saw the hiyw.jpg code it dawned on me that it means "Have it your way." Duh.

Now that I know that BK lets you "have it your way" with reduced fat mayo I tried to find the nutritional info for the rf mayo but I couldn't find it on the web site. But here's the ingredient list for the two mayos: And here's the regular bun vs. baguette ingredient list (there's no list of ingredients for the chicken in the Chicken Baguette):

The trademarked Whopper Sandwich is an "experience" which includes your choice of toppings and the associated eating sloppiness... HOWEVER... ANOTHER little known fact of "have it your way" Whopper sandwich build is to ask for your sandwich CUT IN HALF ... you may have never noticed on an uncut Whopper sandwich that the wrapper is folded in a special way (all BK employees are trained in folding technique...lol) ... when one ASKS for cut in half the special folding forms a non-slip pocket for each half holding in all the sandwich toppings making it possible to cleanly eat a Whopper while driving or any other activity... So now everyone has re-learned two ordering opportunities associated with BK "have it your way" .... OFF THE BROILER and CUT IN HALF I was just looking at the BK website and found these little tidbits, including the option to have "reduced-fat mayo." Inquiring minds want to know if there are in truth 1.535 or 1,537 (or 3070 or 3074) possible ways to order a Whopper sandwich? Which one is it BK? BTW, if you wanna taste test the new Chicken Baguette (and help prove to BK that using Rick Bayless was marketing genius) the web site offers a one-time coupon for a dollar off a CB value meal. I remember that all the supermarkets once changed their weekly sale specials one particular day of the week, was it perhaps on Wednesdays when all the flyers were distributed? I know that they used to all be one day of the week and now the three major chains where I live change their specials respectively on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and distribute their flyers respectively on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. It's very odd, I assume that they must have some competitive logic to this but it seems like it would be better to all do it on one day. (Didn't new movies also traditionally premiere on Wednesdays? That's what I remember from my youth.)

I just remembered that when I was in LA about 10 years ago I was amazed at how many small burger chains were still in existence. Is this still the case, and is this a unique LA phenomenon (i.e. what is it about LA that allows all these guys to survive the McCorporate onslaught when they seemingly haven't elsewhere, at least in the east coast areas I'm familiar with?)

We have Houston's in NYC... Unless there's some other burger place out there with the same name? Oh, it's a new name to me. But I'm about as downscale as can be anyway, more of the In N Out kinda customer. The web site is odd (or unfinished.) Very slick with a list of locations, but absolutely no info about the type of food, or menus, or anything.

No In N Out or Fat Burger or Houston's in NYC. But there is Johnny Rockets

"Let's all root for the ROOT BEERS!" Thanks for sharing this, it was all very interesting. Particularly about the illegality of placement fees for beer. The whole placement fee (or whatever it's called) phenomenon is so bizarre/fascinating that I wish I knew more about it than the sentence or two I'll occasionslly read in an article about retailers or manufacturers.
-
Looking at the web site I thought it was interesting that it's a microbrewery that's also making root beer. I realize that root beer started as an prohibition-era alternative to beer (right?) but I thought that for legal or corporate-logistical reasons nowadays beer is made by beer companies and soda was made by soda companies.

Thank you for the suggestions. Okay, maybe I should know this since I'm Jewish (albeit 100% assimilated and disenfranchised from my heritage,) but what makes corn syrup unacceptable? Isn't it leavened bread that's taboo during the holiday? Further off-topic (or perhaps more on-topic?) what do people think of Johnny Rocket's burgers? I've been wanting to ask this question but didn't know where to ask since I saw a segment on FoodTV unwrapped where they made a point of how the hamburgers are made from fresh, not frozen meat. BTW they also call their french fries "American Fries," I don't know if this predates all the "freedom fries" nonsense or not. Johnny Rockets

Is it possible to find a soda with cane sugar in a supermarket? I've been looking in my local supermarkets since I read about cane sugar vs. corn syurp here and haven't found any. I thought that perhaps one of the specialty or ethnic sodas would have cane sugar but so far everything I've checked (even the pretentious uppity-looking brands) has corn syrup. I almost never drink regular sodas but this corn syurp vs. cane sugar issue sure has piqued my curiosity and I'd like to do a taste comparison.

Ah, for the good old days!

I recall reading that images of women on magazine covers always outsell the alternatives (men, food, solid gold Cadillacs, etc.) regardless of the magazine's intended audience. I guess that's obvious, considering the covers of the majority of women's magazines. Must be one of those unconscious, primitive-brain instinctual sorta thingies.

No because then men wouldn't buy it. Gotta have those buxom babes falling out of their tops on every cover of Cosmo.
