  1. Close your eyes and count backwards slowly from 100. Now repeat after me: I will have grody teeth if I don't limit my soda intake. I will have grody teeth if I don't limit my soda intake. I will have grody teeth if I don't limit my soda intake. I will have grody teeth if I don't limit my soda intake. I will have grody teeth if I don't limit my soda intake. When I snap my fingers, you will awake feeling refreshed and calm. You will remember nothing about this experience, yet you will never again have a problem limiting your soda intake. SNAP!
  2. This summer, on a brutally hot day I went food shopping with a friend who was purchasing in bulk at Jetro (a food wholesaler.) He carried a jacket with him and I was wondering "what the heck?" but of course the reason was that Jetro has a huge refrigerated walk-in room. Since I'm often too warm even when it's 70 degrees I was in heaven in the refrigerated room, even in shorts and T-shirt and I told my friend I was ready to move in. But I admitted to him that after about 15 minutes my exposed skin was feeling a little uncomfortable and my hands were getting numb. I should have worn gloves along with the shorts and T-shirt. BTW you can also experience that wonderful chill (in a smaller space) at Western Beef in the NYC area.
  3. Isn't that what saliva was scientifically formulated to do? Start the breakdown of food substances while simultaneously protecting the teeth, that is? Who invented that stuff anyway?
  4. I'm not shilling for the soda industry, but correlation does not prove causation (especially with a sampling of two subjects) so I'd imagine that there's a good chance that their grody teeth have nothing to do with 2-4 cans a day. Or it might.
  5. Snapple has a list of retired flavors on their web site. FWIW it doesn't list French Cherry Soda. Retired Flavors
  6. Yes, I think that's it. I buy whatever's on sale, usually the supermarket brand or Vintage seltzer (or some other brand I can't remember.) There are also colorless naturally flavored soda with sweeteners, but that's halfway back to diet soda (althought they're pretty tasty.)
  7. Mostly I drink water but I started drinking some more diet soda recently so it reminded me of the soda acid controversy. I assume that it's one of those urban legends that became repeated so often that it becomes a truism for people who repeat it. And while there are good arguments to limit soda this argument seemingly gets used as a scare tactic. Have you tried flavored seltzers? They're nothing but seltzer water and natural flavorings. No calories. Delicious and refreshing. (You could pour some tea concentrate into seltzer if you want the tea flavor and/or caffeine.)
  8. I always wondered about that anti-soda argument; it didn't make much sense to me since so many other foods and drinks are acidic, and acidic food (I assume) are going to spend much more time in contact with one's teeth than beverages. A few months ago I did a little online searching and came up with these faqs from Coca-Cola (below) that refute those soda acid claims. Granted, the comments are self-serving, but they seem to make sense. I wonder if there's a food scientist who could comment about this? I'm not pro-Coke or pro-Soda, just interested in the truth and anti "junk science." Thanks.
  9. Lipton offers this, if it's any help: Lipton Cold Brew I realize that you don't care for Nestea but did you know that they sell an unsweetened liquid concentrate? Nestea Liquid Unsweetened Free Sample

    Burger King

???? Meat holding as in how the meat is kept until sold? or meat holding as in why don't they apply some sort of non-slip coating to keep the patties from plopping out of the buns?

    Burger King

it should be noted that i have freakishly small hands. In other words, you're saying sub-optical illusion fast-food sandwich?

    Burger King

Is it just an optical illusion or is that sandwich about the length of a finger? If so, that's the smallest fast-food sammich I ever did see (or the longest finger.....)
  15. How about International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF)? They have numerous facilities in NJ and I believe that (one of?) their primary R&D lab(s) is in NJ. Yeah, as I understand, they have the secret formula for Pepsi (or was it Coke?) and many of the Snapples, that and among a million other things. I was there about 10 years ago and installed one of their first multi-processor NCR SQL servers for storing the formulaes. IFF was discussed in the recent Time magazine article "Inside the food labs." That's why they were on my mind. Inside the Food Labs

  17. Alas, yes, they have both gone to Candy Bar Heaven. You can catch a glimpse of the Caravelle wrapper here, though I'm sure that's poor consolation for you. Edited to add: here's another Caravelle wrapper...looks like it's from later years. The Milkshake (I remember it, too!) is on the list of discontinued food items from our youth found here. I was saddened to see Sugar Mommas on the list. I remember the name Caravelle but don't remember the taste. Can someone describe it? Milkshake, is there a picture of the wrapper out there, and can someone describe the taste? Thanks!

    POMEGRANATES

Here's a corrected link (the above one has too many //) No Mess Thank you. When I searched, I came up with this page: Opening and eating (not as detailed) from the company that's selling POM juice.

    POMEGRANATES

Any clues as to how to pick a good or sweeter one (or do they have to ripen or????) They all looked the same to me, I chose one, it really wasn't very sweet, sort of bitter, I didn't understand what the appeal was, especially considering the effort to payoff ratio. I didn't eat any of the white stuff (pith?)
  20. The next step in the Wegmans evolution is therefore the TeraWegmans To be followed by the: PetaWegmans ExaWegmans ZetaWegmans YottaWegmans I hope that their marketing department is on the ball and doesn't miss out on this branding coup!
  21. I just took a look at the PDF version and the restaurant section is completely different from the print version that I have. My copy must be a newer version because this section has been considerably improved and expanded, from one page to five. Rather than "Choice of Cuisine," it is titled "Eating Latino." After an introductory segment, there are separate segments for the following cuisines: Mexico and Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala); El Caribe (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico); Spain; The Andes (Columbia, Peru, Ecuador); and the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay.) I can't attest to the quality of the listings, but there are a few restaurants listed in each section for each cuisine. There are also a number of photos of various foods and there are a few more sources listed for online info, but they're probably no better than the two you mentioned. The back of the book, "Inteneraries" has been modified also, although I don't know if the information is actually changed. Along with sections about the various communities that have Latino populations, the information about shopping has been combined into one multi-page sidebar called "Shopping Latino" that mentions a number of shopping districts to purchase foodstuffs and other items. Note: The copyright of the PDF version is 2001 and the print version now available is copyright 2003.
  22. CNN had a segment about this today: Sweet UK debut for U.S. doughnut
  23. I just received a nice, very colorful brochure from the NJ Tourism Dept. titled "New Jersey's Latino Visitor Guide." It's got a bunch of information about foods and restaurants, discussing both specific cuisines and various neighborhoods. It list a few restaurants for each type of cuisine with addresses and phone numbers, and has information about shopping districts where products can be purchased. It's also got information about culture, events, history, etc. Free copies are available from 1-800-VISIT-NJ ext. 3506 or online at: New Jersey Publications There's also a PDF version of the brochure at this address. Note: The PDF version online is an older version with very little information about food. In addition, they are offering "Asian American Tour Guide to Fun & Attractions" and "African American Tour Guide to Fun & Attractions" among other things. I also ordered both of these, but I didn't receive them.
  24. I read a rave review of Int'l Food Warehouse and was looking forward to visiting it. But then I also read that they carried a lot of outdated food so I decided to check out the food at my local National Wholesale Liquidators (same company, btw why is one "National" and the other's "International"? ) The first three food items I checked at random in National Wholesale Liquidators were outdated, although other items were not. (Isn't selling outdated food illegal?) Suffice it to say, my enthusiasm about visiting Int'l Food Warehouse was dampened.
  25. There's a link on that page to a nifty interactive fast food nutrition calculator. How Does Your Fast-Food Meal Rate? (In the lower left corner of the page.)
