  1. After the success of MatthewB's thread last week, I thought we'd try this again. Next weekend I'm visiting my parents in Grand Rapids, MI. Matthew and I thought it would be fun to make dinner together. We'd like some help with the menu. We need ideas for: -A nice refreshing summer cocktail -First Course is going to be tuna tartar. I'm going to try to get some Wasabi Caviar to serve with this. -shellfish course -salad -A meat dish. I was thinking of getting a boneless pork rack, which is the meat from baby back ribs cut into a roast. If you have other suggestions that's great. -Vegetable -Starch -Dessert Wine pairings would also be great. My Dad is in charge of drinks so price is no object Matthew is going to get the fruit and vegetables from the Farmer's Market. Things currently in season here in the Midwest are tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, corn , new potatoes, beets, greens (not lettuces really), summer squashes, eggplant, peppers, peaches, plums, blueberries, and probably lots of other things. Thanks.
  2. A babe in every sense of the word .
  3. Hilary is at work. I hope she's not reading this.
  4. Lay it out. I'm more of a Jimmy Carville kinda guy. I'll stay on the edges. You get the spotlight, my friend. Four dates. Name them. Aurora gets a two-fer. Carry on. OK, but I thought the U-Roy / Curtis reference might convince you. We'll start over. Please pick any weekends that you CAN make it. The weekend with the most "YES" votes wins. September 19-21 September 26-28 October 3-5 October 17-19 My votes are: September 19-21 : YES September 26-28 : YES October 3-5 : YES October 17-19 : YES
  5. Matthew took over the Palace (with his chalice) in a bloodless coup. I am currently in exile.
  6. My attempt at dictatorship failed. We've entered Egullet Scheduling Hell (ESH). Once you start down the road to ESH, there's little hope. Maybe we should start the vote over w/ 4 dates? Vote for whichever ones you can make? Most votes wins. We'll give Dawn a double vote because she's the boss.

    Staryucks

A Starbucks opened in my neighborhood a couple of years ago. It's in a nice 1920s building which has a beautiful white terra cotta facade. Of course when they moved into the building they had to paint their portion of the facade a puky yellow color to match some corporate decorating agenda . Now the whole building looks like shit. Oh yeah, their used to be an independant record store in that building .

    Sex

The Mawby wines are the best in Michigan, although that's not saying a lot. I do like the marketing angle.
  11. September 27-28? It's Nero's birthday. I would also like to have Aurora there, after all she is my girlfriend . Fresco - no problem with the kids/relatives/others. I'm bringing my kids along too. My parents might even be able to babysit for you. We have a great tradition of being especially welcoming to relatives/spouses/significant others.
  12. I'm making quesadillas with flor de calabaza and huitlacoche for dinner tonight . I'm pretty sure they don't have huitlacoche in Italy .
  13. I bought some red sweet corn today. The crazy guy who sells me produce says iy is "cornier" than other sweet corn. I'll report back after dinner tonight.
  14. If you go through this thread, you will find that it's about 3/4 positive, 1/4 negative for people who live in Manhattan and people who live outside it.
  15. Amtrak from chicago to GR is only $60. But yes, it is Amtrak . Is this the place?. How am I going to get that Louis Jordan song out of my head?
  16. This is a most Italian dish. But zuchinni are originally from Mexico. I bet the Aztecs, Mayans, etc. were eating zuchinni flowers before Columbus was even born . I didn't even know that they eat stuffed blossoms in Italy, I've only had them in Mexico. They're also very good in a light soup made with chicken broth. I had some at Spring in Chicago last week that were stuffed with lobster and braised, yum,
  17. Current list: Sweet Willie Victoria56 Aurora (twins?, Flaca can take the kids to the park) Maggie & Lou We still have room for a couple more. If you want to go to the store (People who go to the store also get a tour of the Virgin of Guadalupe Shrine) come at 2. Cooking will start at 3. We're also going to make some sangrita to have with tequila .
  18. Let's make a date. Vote for either October 3-5 or October 17-19 (don't worry Ms. Ramsey, we already have big plans for you). Whichever weekend has the most votes by Friday wins. I was thinking we'd go out to dinner Friday and do the hayride/apple picking party stuff on Saturday in case some people can't make it until Saturday. I vote for the 4th.
  19. try pasting the link without the img button. maybe we can help you debug this problem.

    Beer Can Chicken

I don't buy the beer can steam thing, I think it's a gimmick. I prefer to smoke my chicken cut up, there's more surface area for smoke penetration. If you use a water pan in your smoker you'll get just as much steam.
  21. This is great, the versions I've had also include cubed beets.
  22. What makes these Italian? Shouldn't this be in cooking? I like them stuffed with Queso Oaxaqueno, battered and deep fried, with a squeeze of lime and some hot sauce.

    Pink Swordfish

I got some more info today: The swordfish was caught of the coast of Louisiana. Krill was a possible explanation for the color. I asked, and it's definately not marlin.
