I'm from the 'cook-alone' camp. It annoys me when someone else is in the kitchen. I don't have time to entertain anyone and just want to concentrate on what I'm doing! Gyoza and pizzas are good ideas. If not, it can really just be something like you preparing the meals and them plating it. Or them making a salad while you prepare something else.

Kim Shook: Thank you! I don't know if they really should be higher though. Most scones recipes I've seen require Cream of Tartar or shortening (Dorie's recipe doesn't). They tasted great. I'm just over analysing it a little because the MIL asked me to bake scones for a birthday party next week... Sorry to hear about your cake! BTW, butter can be microwaved (in 5-10 second zaps!) so in the event .....

I like cookbooks (although I don't own very many). For me, the internet works only if I already have something in mind. It doesn't usually inspire me to try something, unless there are amazing reviews on forums like eGullet;) Books however.... they make me happy. I've gone to bed many times, reading a cookbook. I love the pictures, the smell and the feel of it. It's the same with reading, really. I could never read an e-book.

I spend about 100 euro/week for the 2 of us (excluding eating out) which is on the high side for The Netherlands (read somewhere parents+2 kids = 100 euro/week). We don't entertain often and we don't even eat at home every day -on average, 4 days a week at home, 3 days a week takeaway/restaurant.

I'll eat both, but I'm definitely leaning towards savoury. I love leftovers and I'd do anything for roti canai with fish curry or nasi lemak in the morning. Can't buy them here though so usually make do with brioche, sausage rolls, eggs or other pastries. What Chris Amirault posted, I could eat for every meal for a week in a row....

What would you bring back from "the good old days"?
DeliciouslyLekker replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
I am Malaysian so my idea of the 'good old days' might be quite different! What I miss: i) the little trucks selling fresh vegetables or noodles/rice dishes which drive through the backlane of your house ii) the bread man on his motorcycle doing the same thing Both identifiable by horns and what-not. -

It is indeed easy! I used a ruler to measure my loaf pan. It's 26cm x 12cm(in inches: 10.2 x 4.7) at the top but it kind of slopes inwards.

Sure:) You can find the recipe here

I made David Leite's supposedly perfect chocolate chip cookies yesterday and was throughly disappointed (not to mention grumpy at having to use my precious 5 euro per 70g bar stash of Valrhona chocolate ). I made 3 batches- one after about 22 hours in the fridge, another after 37 hours and the last after about 60 hours. There was a slight difference but not much (the first had a more.. cakey middle, the last I haven't tried but they pretty much look the same). I don't know what I did wrong but these were rather boring cookies:/

And can you share a recipe for that, please? ← To be honest, I used a prepackaged mix this time as I do not have a cleaver nor did I have much time! If you can find a Prima Taste chicken rice mix, buy it- it is very authentic(the only thing which is not good is the chilli sauce). Of course you can choose to make it from scratch.
