  1. there's nothing subpar about this. of this you are assured. i get great results on a standard weber grill in 40 degree temps in NJ. pete. i've been a fan of frankie and johnnies for years. mostly since i lived in hoboken for so long. but, i'm of the opinion that if you can't detect the by-products of dry-aging (the minerally, intense flavor), then you're not getting what i would consider great dry-aged beef. point being, if you can't tell if they're dry-aging at F&J, then it's not a contender. ← Point taken. Nice blog, by the way.
  2. I think Frankie and Johnnie's in Hoboken comes close....don't know if they dry age though.
  3. 27 Mix is new, but it's supposed to be very good. It's right near Rutgers and the business district...quite a safe area.
  4. One thing to consider....if you rent an apartment, you will not have a front desk clerk/concierge to make restaurant reservations for you. We stayed in a cheap hotel when we went to Paris, and they were very helpful in this regard. I suppose you could fax your request from the US, but I think having a local call them up gives you a better shot at reserving a table, especially on short notice. Have fun!
  5. Fernandes 2 Steak House 158 Fleming Ave. Newark, New Jersey 07105
  6. It's on 40 Davis Ave. The name of the place is Gaucho.
  7. That's the traditional Brazilian way of making churrasco...I don't believe they're doing it "so you get sick of the taste fast". Solar is Portuguese owned, so possibly it's different there. I liked the rodizio at Solar just fine, but the seafood dishes have been mediocre in my opinion. It's definitely a good option if you're in the area. There's a good new Brazilian place that just opened in Kearny. It's on Hoyt and Davis. I can't recall the name (it might be "Rodizio"), but there's a big metal bull in front of the place...you can't miss it. Rather inexpensive compared to the places in Newark.

    venue

Just to reiterate the questions of other posters, is this still in effect? Hoping it is for Sunday...

  10. Thanks for all the suggestions. I would have never thought of Pal's and I pass it everyday on the way to work. Tierney's is too smoky, Egans too noisy. Michael's Roscommon House sounds most intriguing so I think we are going to try that. Came across this while searching. Munchmobile Wrap Up for 2005 ← The Jersey Wings (garlic and cheese) are also very good at Michael's Roscommon.
  11. The website http://wwwdavidlebovitz.com/ seems out of order. Despite different tries through different routes it failed to appear. Please check with your friend to solve the problem. ← You're missing the dot after the dub dub dub. Here's the correct link: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/
  12. Believe it or not, there are people in Lyndhurst who actually appreciate good food and are willing to pay for it. It's nice not to have to drive over a half hour to get a great meal. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Fortunato the one time we went, especially the rigatoni with truffle oil.
  13. I understand protecting employees from second hand smoke, and completely agree with it. But what about the situation I mentioned upthread, where a single owner is also the only bartender. Shouldn't he be permitted to allow smoking if he so chooses? I'm sure this would only apply to relatively small number of bars.
  14. I thought there was a stipulation (in NY maybe?) that says if there is only one proprietor, who is also the only bartender, then smoking would be permitted if he/she allowed it. This would basically only apply to the hole-in-the-wall, old man bars, which certainly serve a purpose at times.
  15. What about Triangle Hofbrau on Route 23 in Pequannock (I think)? I've never been but had heard good things about it a number of years ago and everytime I drive by I think we should try it. Dana ← Triangle Hofbrau is really nothing special....at all. I go for lunch sometimes for a change of pace. Black Forest Inn is far better and not that far from the Hofbrau.
  16. You're probably thinking of Orchid, which is on Washington Ave. near the bridge to Lyndhurst. I agree...just OK. I thought Thai Essence was quite a bit better, but have only checked out their limited lunch menu. There was a small thread on it here.
  17. There's Orchid, which is a Thai place on Washington Ave., right over the Lyndhurst/Nutley bridge. There's also Thai Essence on Franklin Ave. in Nutley, which is very good. Then there's Brookside Thai on Broad St. on Bloomfield...also very good but may be a little far from Rutherford.

    table 8

Really good dinner at Table 8 the other night. Standouts were the ravioli with truffle oil and the monkfish "osso bucco"...with buttery Israeli couscous and clams. And I dig those comfortable red chairs.
  19. Did this just happen? I went 3 weeks ago, assuming they did lunch, and couldn't find it so I called them for directions. They said they were not open for lunch. I also tried Table 8 on a whim, since someone posted on baristanet that they were open for lunch. No such luck. Edit: I had to call both places to see if I am going crazy. Apparently I am, since they both claim that they are now open for lunch.
  20. I'm fairly certain that Egan & Sons is NOT open for lunch. Neither is Table 8.
  21. just making sure Anonymouze understands how that model might not work here, as, perhaps, was suggested. ← Well that's my question. How does that model work? As far as I know, it's not "officially sanctioned", yet planning can take place on the thread. If it is official, then nevermind.
  22. We already do this in Philly. You can check out the Dangerous Dining Club Yahoo Group for our past exploits. We're having an authentic Navidad Puertoriqueno next on Dec. 20 and 21. The restaurant was too small to accomodate us all on one night so I'm playing hostess twice! This really is not so difficult to do. Someone has to volunteer to contact the restaurant and plan a menu. We try to keep our cost at $25/person. If it's a more upscale restaurant then we price it accordingly. The price must bewith tax and gratuity included. That way whomever is hosting can collect all the monies at the beginning of the evening, pay the restaurant and then be a guest themselves. No haggling, penny counting, tip figuring or any such nonsense at the end of the evening. We also try to go to BYO restaurants whenever possible. If the restaurant has a liquor license then it's a cash bar, so none of the teetotalers have to subsidize the drinkers. Very egalitarian and seems to work well. ← i'd imagine this would have to be done off-site or via PM, given the restrictions of egullet concerning events planning. ← Although somehow the PA Pizza Club manages to pull this off. Maybe it should be based on that model...
  23. Not sure how underground they are, but 15 Fox Place in JC might qualify. There is a thread around here somewhere. It's a lot of fun, but they don't seem to change the menu very often. Edit: Here is a small thread.
  24. Sesame in Montclair on Bloomfield Ave Shiki Wok right in Bloomfield. They have internet ordering too ← Sesame isn't bad. They have an affordable Peking Duck dinner, and the food in general is decent. I had a poached duck with 5 spices that was exceptional! Rich, is Shiki Wok better than the place right across the street? For takeout, I think that Wah Chung is probably the best in the area. If you have an interest in other Asian cuisines, Montclair has plenty. Thai Chef and Little Saigon are both excellent. ← Where is Wah Chung located? I take it they deliver?
  25. Yes, it's open. We were there for lunch 2 weeks ago.
