  14. I want to use this thread to make a list of stores in which we can find non-Japanese type foods. This is for either stores or online shops please feel free to add some of your own favorites or send them to me for inclusion as I may try to combine things for easier reading. Most of the stores I have experience with are in the Tokyo area so please so if you have information for others cities please add it. I will try to organize them by category, General International, Korean, Thai, Indian, etc... This is a work in progress so please bear with me!

    Dinner! 2003

Friday dinner: baked chicken pieces coated with EVOO, parmesan cheese, and garlic and then drizzled with a basalmic-butter sauce mashed potatoes slowcooked green beans, carrots, onions and tomatoes with EVOO and lemon juice dinner rolls (from Costco)
  17. word for 12/6: 洋梨 ようなし younashi (yo-nash-shee) You means Western and the nashi of course refers to the Japanese pear, thus yonashi means Western pear, of what is just commonly referred to in English as pear. These are quite popular in Japan and though some are imported most are grown here. the most popular with something like 75% of the pear market is the variety called La France (ra furansu in Japanese), it's short season runs mid-November through December. La France: http://www.informatics.tuad.ac.jp/net-expo...e/lafrance.html
  18. tea with milk added, as compared to the other ways of drink black teas in Japan lemon tea straight tea (nothing added) So when you go to McDonalds and order an iced tea they will ask you if you want lemon tea or milk tea, then they will plop either a little tub of fake cream or a small packet of fake lemon juice on your tray. I prefer mine straight!

  20. melokheya (and its other hundred spellings! ) is in practically every Japanese supermarket. I am not completely sure of its season but it seems like a summer vegetable. During the summer I was buying it from various places at only 100yen for a bag! and at what seemed it's peak it was going for 2 bags at 100yen. you might just have to wait until next summer, though my local Seikyo Co-op does sell it frozen.... Though I wasn't specifically looking for it, I never noticed it at any of the International supermarkets. I do find most of their vegetables so overpriced. I have given up on using things like celeriac and parsnips because they aren't worth the $10 a piece they charge. Pretty good prices on some of the more "unusual" produce can be found at Carrefour and Precce stores if you have any near you.
  21. Ok this is not really food related but someone just opened an educational toys store at the nearby "mall" and they have named the store Poop & Pee I am not kidding! here is their website: http://www.poop-pee.net/

  23. 4 more for me! I didn't buy them though a friend who doesn't cook much gave them to me Woman's Day Japanese Cooking The Fine Art of Japanese Cooking --Dekura All Colour Baking Book --British book with no author The Hostess Cookbook --Ager and Westland
  24. Here is another pizza no-no, it happened to me last night. I was trying to transfer a large slice of pizza from the cookie sheet to the cutting board with a spatula. With a cookie sheet in one hand and a spatula in the other, I had no choice but to try to catch the falling slice by thrusting my hips forward to try to trap it at the counter. Luckily I was wearing pants the bad thing is that they were white!
  25. word for 12/5: 梨 なし nashi (nah-shee) Usually referred to as an Asian pear or pear apple in English, this fruit native to China, thas too many varieties in Japan to count. Ok maybe they can be counted but there are still a huge number. They are generally divided into two groups, the red ones (more of a brown) and the blue ones (more of a green or yellow depending on the variety). The most common size is probably a little bigger than a baseball, though I have seen some that are too big to hold in the palm of your hand. In Japan they are always peeled before eating their crispy yet juicy flesh. They have quite a short seasonal and are available only from the end of summer into very early fall. the " blue" nashi: http://www.maruka-ishikawa.co.jp/images/ve...ure/nijuss2.jpg the "red" nashi http://www.maruka-ishikawa.co.jp/images/ve...re/nansui10.jpg
