Little House series reading group (Laura Ingalls Wilder)
Shelby replied to a topic in Food Media & Arts
Me too, Heidi. I also find myself wishing that there were more of the series to read. I've read all of the biographies written by other people about Laura and Rose (her daughter). I didn't really enjoy that, though, because it painted a different picture of how Laura and her family were...seems that all wasn't as rosy as I'd like to think. Oh, and I was just looking at my cookbook. Laura said that she never learned how to make vanity cakes. She said that she knew they were mostly egg and were fried like a doughnut. -
Juicy Lucy burgers for us! For those not familiar with that, the burgers are stuffed with gooey, melty, cheesy goodness. We used Kraft processed American cheese (I know, but just melts so well) and a chunk of horseradish cheese for the stuffage. "Stuffage" is not a word, by the way. Also, had some goose steaks wrapped in bacon. Darn good with some spinach and a cheesy rice casserole. Finally, I've really been enjoying my pasta machine.

Every time I read about the little cakes, my mouth starts to water. I'm definitely interested in trying the marshmallow and biscuit recipe! I've been lax about uploading pictures for a while, so these are a couple of weeks old. We got 17 inches of snow so it seemed like a great time to try the molasses candy. I boiled the molasses and brown sugar roughly to a bit over soft ball stage...I need a candy thermometer *sigh* These bowls were filled with fresh, fluffy snow. Here is the candy drizzled. In hindsight, one should really pack the snow down into the bowls. Here is a piece of the finished product. Both my husband and I thought it tasted really good! Very sticky, though! I also made some snow ice cream...very very good. -

Ditto. Unless my cats get to it first. They love eggs for some reason.

I bought one of these in early January of this year. I absolutely LOVE it.

Dr. Beal, what a straight line!! I'm not sure who the next blogger will be either. But it certainly seems fish is featured. Somebody from NOLA? Mayhew Man is another of the departed, but somebody else from that area? OMG ROFL I just got soup up my nose over that one. Mayhaw Man was going to be my guess, too.

"Modernist Cuisine" by Myhrvold, Young & Bilet (Part 2)

Prickly? Only my legs 'cause I need to shave. Seriously, I've never read a "prickly" comment about Mr. Ruhlman here. -
Me too, on the whole chicken, weinoo. We've gotten 59 cents a pound at times. Once in a while, right after St. Patty's Day, corned beef roasts will go on sale for pretty cheap. Oh, and eggs around Easter are always a great buy...except I sure like my 1.00/dozen eggs that I get from the chicken lady down the road better. Apart from that, it seems like Campbell's soups are always on sale like 10 cans for $10. And cake mixes the same way.

For me it's chili. I use our own ground venison, canned tomatoes and frozen peppers, both from our garden.

Hell, NO I wouldn't eat like that just to live to 125 years old. I'd completely lose the joy in my life if I couldn't drink red wine and eat homemade pasta. Not to mention the fact that I don't want to see my boobs at age 125.

I LOVE chocolate covered tater chips... I seriously need to make my own. BUT if this ice cream has chips that stand up to the challenge, I will be in heaven.

OMG now I have a real step-by-step tutorial!! I'm so excited. Thank you!!! All I've been thinking about is making those...and then I get lazy...or something I'm going to sacrifice myself and offer to eat all of those since I wouldn't want you to have to do it yourself. I LOVE the tip about cutting the corners so that you know what flavor it is.

OMG vanilla ice cream, salty caramel and CHOCOLATE COVERED POTATO CHIP CLUSTERS. http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/gutcheck/2011/03/jimmy_fallon_stephen_colbert_ben_and_jerrys_ice_cream_flavors.php I looked at Wal-Mart, but it's not there yet.

You were a busy woman yesterday! The ribs look great. I never make polenta for dinner...I need to do that. Oh and your bread. Seriously beautiful. It's going to snow here for the next two days. *SIGH* Already a winter storm watch in effect. I really enjoyed all of the outdoor market pics. Everything is just so...green and pretty.

Cooking from "Salsas that Cook" by Rick Bayless

This looks really good. I'm a pasta nut. I love eating pasta with my chili but I've never thought about different salsas.
