  1. Cheese balls, otherwisw known as "air biscuits" As soon as they are in your mouth, they disappear and you have to reach for another one.
  2. We do have a DD here in Ocean City, NJ but I haven't seen any KK. However there are two places in town that sell outstanding doughnuts. First, and my favorite is Ward's Pastry, an old fashioned bakery. They have sticky buns, Danish, apple fritters, etc plus the best jelly doughnuts I have ever eaten. The second place is Brown's on the boards. It is a small family resturant, but they have a window on the boardwalk where the sell coffe and doughnuts. They use a Belshaw automatic donut maker, one of those gadgets were the batter is deposited at one end, trvels along in hot oil and a doughnut is flipped out at the other end. There is always a line. Very tasty doughnuts.
  3. I like Bowl Noddle, Nong Shim brand. Its instant noddles in a little plastic soup bowl. I just checked the sodium content - 1083mg! I thought that was pretty bad. Then I looked at the serving size = one half bowl! Wow. I guess I won't be buying them anymore.
  4. Scotch Broth (and Pepperpot) are still available. Not easy to find though. The Acme here in Ocean City has both at least the did a few months ago. The problem is Campbell's keeps coming out with new soups, low fat, low sodium etc. that push the old soups of of the shelf. I guess people really buy the 15 or so variations of chicken noodle. I do like the Pepperpot, Scotch Broth and Cream of Tomato with a grilled cheese sandwich.
  5. To me, the best crab cakes ever can be found at the Captain's Galley, Crisfield MD, the Crab Capitol of the World. They also have some of the best soft shells. The dining room faces the dock giving the diner one of the best views of the Bay, looking toward Tangier Island
  6. Make some strong, hot tea in a mug. Add, two Tbs. honey, 3 or 4 whole cloves, a chunk of ginger root, the juice of half a lemon and a shot or two of rum/whiskey. It'll do the trick every time. My wife usually has two.
  7. For me, it would not be Thanksgiving dinner without creamed onions. I have made them with fresh, canned and frozen. I prefer the frozen pearl onions, cooked until tender, then stirred into a fairly thick bechamel, with salt, black pepper and a little fresh greated nutmeg. I have never tried the cheese addition, but I will next time.
  8. I don't think there is any line. As a metter of fact most steak sandwiches in Philly are made with the steaks chopped on the grill. Dalessanro's in Roxbourgh makes them that way and they are outstanding. Cheese, onions and sauce are optional. I don't see anything wrong with preparing the steak sandwich in this manner, as long as they are cooked to order. Thats how most Pizza/Steak/Hoagie shops in Philly do it. What I don't like is when I see a stand at some farmer's market prepare a mountain of meat and onions to be shoveled onto a bun hours later!
  9. I had my fist Five Guys burger yesterday at the new Somers Point store. The cashier was very patient with a couple novices going through the list of 15 free topping. Some of them you don't see to often in a burger joint. Sauted mushroom, jalepenos and A-1 sauce for instance. We each chose a cheese burger with different topping, and we ordered one small fries.. We got our drinks, found a table and muched on the free peanuts while we waited for our order. Our number was called in about 10 minutes. No plates, no trays, just 2 burgers a container of fries and a wad of napkins in a brown paper bag. The foil wrapped sandwiches had little stickers #1 and #2. a register reciept taped to the bag showed the toppings for each. No guessing on which was which. I thought that was a nice touch. The burgers were hefy, nice double patty fried to a slight crispness around the edge. The topping were fresh, the fries well browned. Ketchup and malt vinegar are available. The one small order of fries was plenty, as a matter of fact my wife and I were not able to finish them. We found it to be a very enjoyable lunch.
  10. I love those donuts from those machines. There is a place in Beach Haven that has one and people line up in the morning like you would not believe!
  11. We went to get our car inspected today, and since we were'nt far from North Wildwood, we decided to stop at Maui's for hotdogs. The place is going to close. Maui's wife, Liz said he wants to get a "real job" The building and the equipment are for sale but not the business. It seems that when the sale occurs, that will be the end of the Dog House. I hate to see them go
  12. I always thought they were the same thing also, but Usinger's website offers several types of wieners and several types of frankfurters.
  13. I know I could come up with a huge list, but let me just go with the first two things that came to mind. 1 The pineapple upside down cake my mother used to make in the iron frying pan 2 Peppermint stick ice cream in a sugar cone at Howard Johnson's
  14. On the night before Ash Wednesday (fastnacht day or mardi gras) the German tradition is fastnachts - fried diamonds of potato dough sprinkeled with powdered sugar or sugar and cinnimon
  15. In my opinion the best crabcake is to be found at a resturant called the Captain's Galley in Crisfield Maryland. Why is it the best? 1. It is made from the proper crab - the Blue Crab (callinectes sapidus) They don't have to be from Maryland, they range from Mass. to Texas. However 50% of US crabs are harvested from the Chesapeake 2.When you break into it with your fork, you wonder what held it together thru the broiling and plateing 3. There are no intrusions to the flavor of the jumbo lump meat (bell peppers, onions herbs etc.) Maybe a touch of Old Bay and I think a dab of mayo What else? The fact that I am in a town that calls itself the Crab Capitol of the Wolrd. Plus my table is on the dock open to the Chesapeake Bay. (I think this has a lot to do with it) Do I make crab cakes at home?.............No! I am lucky enough to live in Ocean City NJ. The bay is one block away and with our traps and hand lines, my wife and I can, in the warm weather, catch all the blue crabs we want. We cook them, cover the table with newspaper, put a out a pitcher of beer, a roll of paper towels and wood mallets and go to town. If the good Lord made anything better, He would have kept it for Himself!!

    Chicken Gizzards

There is an Amish stand at the farmer's market in Gilbertsville PA (Zern's) that keeps an electric skillet full of boiled gizzards and butter on the counter. They will fill a paper cup for you. Salt and hot sauce are handy. Great munching while you shop! Also, when I was a kid, my mother would sometimes kepp a bowl of boiled gizzards in the fridge for snacking. We would sprinkle on a little salt and eat them cold. The bowl didn't last too long everyone loved them!
  17. Funny I should come across this thread now. I just had my first DillyCheeseburger at Dilly's Corner since I moved from Bucks County to Ocean City 2 years ago. I don't know what they do, but I think they are one of the best burgers I've had. Does anyone remember the "Mighty Mo" at the Hot Shoppes? That was another of my fav's.
  18. I was under the impression that the NJ Ave location was their primary store. Every time I go there Maui is on the grill and his wife, Liz, is on the counter. I thought the store on the boards had closed??
  19. I am going to try one more time to post a link to the real estate listing for Maui's Dog House Here
  20. The sauces in my pantry are just five. 1. Tabasco (original) - My choice for Bloody Marys 2. Crystal - Scrabled eggs, wings etc. 3. Pickapeppa - for anything that seems to need a kick and two new ones my wife brought back from Arizona 4. La Cuacamaya (Mexico) a good flavor and a slow developing burn. 5. Tapatio (should be an accent over the i) My current favorite. Not blazing hot, but a good flavor.
  21. Guess I'm way out numbered, but I prefer Bounty select-a-size. Of course the market seem to always have everthing but!
  22. The real estate link did not seem to work. I'll try again Here
  23. My wife and I stopped by Maui's for the first time of the season on Saturday. See HollyEats Review. We had our usual order Dressed for me (onion, mustard and chili sauce) a Soprano for the wife (baby spinach sauted with white wine topped with grated parmesean) one order of salty balls and two Stewart's root beers. On the way out I noticed the For Sale sign I hope we are not going to loose the Dog House. Its my favorite South Jersey hotdog
