  1. The Hot Dog Hut in Ocean City serves battered and deep fried green beans.
  2. When I was a kid we used to go to my grandmother's home town in the PA mountains (Lykens). There you could by what my father called "cow molasses" You had to bring your own jar and the shopkeeper would pump the molasses out of a barrel with a hand cranked pump. That stuff was great on a nice fresh slice of white bread.
  3. It's amazing. One egg, one slice of bread 1,000 names. I think I like one eyed jack the best. Since I make toad in the hole (sausage and Yorkshire pudding) I couldn't use that name.

A nice fresh set of Shad roe. Served with a perfectly boneless piece of Shad filet
  5. I have no problem getting Yoohoo here in South Jersey
  6. A raw oyster on a peach half with maple syrup.
  7. Boardwalk pizza - thin crust, sauce, cheese, maybe sprinkle some dried oregano at the table.
  8. Pickeled eggs, pickeled Polish sausage and Bind Robins (little packs of smoked herring) I haven't been able to find those Polish sausages in a jar for years!
  9. A big pot of soup, made with lots of bones, simmered for hours.
  10. I finally got around to trying the YakiSoba bowl. I found it pretty good for fast food Japanese. Moist chicken, good sauce and fresh noodles. I was a little disapointed to find a puddle of water under the noodles though.
  11. I seem to recall Craig LeBan of the Philadelphia Inquirer rating an Ocean City burger as one of his top ten last year.Stay right there while I fire up Google. Yep. Here is the rest of the list if interested. http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment...te_Burgers.html ← I just saw this post this morning. I don't think the hourglass of my pointer had stopped turning before I was on the phone to see if Brown's was open for lunch today. (many places in Ocean City are open only on weekends, or closed all together at this time of year) They were open, and my wife and I were off to the boards for burgers. We ordered a cheeseburger and iced tea each, with one order of fries. The waitess soon returned and told us the delivery of beef from Boyar's market was late, but should arrive momentarily. We decided to wait. Less the 5 minutes later the delivery arrived. The burgers were certainly fresh, and they were juicy, with a good flavor, but we found them rather small. Maybe that's why Craig LeBon says he needs two. I don't think I could use the word "perfection" in their desription. Although they were good, we both decided we would prefer 5 Guys. The check came to $20.06 ($5.50 each for the burgers) which I found a little steep for food served on paper plates and paper cups, but then you have to take into account that we were on the boards with an ocean view, and a sea breeze coming in the window.
  12. They just opened one in Somers Point next to Five Guys. Has anyone been to a Samurai Sam's? Does anyone know where they originated? I would have tried it out, but I was geared up for a FG burger.
  13. I just heard that Olga's Diner on the Marlton Circle was closed by the State for back taxes. When I lived in PA, Olga's was one of my favorite stops on the way to the shore. They always seemed very busy, but I haven't been there since we moved to OC a few years ago. Has anyone heard any details?
  14. I miss the Mighty Mo at the Hot Shoppes. That and the Teen Twist. Either one with an Orange Freeze.
  15. I mentioned this on another thread, but I thought I would put it up as a new topic so more folks would see it. July 11, 12 and 13 they are holding the New Jersey State Barbecue Championship in North Wildwood. We have been there several times and really enjoy the event. The hard part is trying to decide which vendor to buy from, it all looks great. Are any local people into BBQ or is that more of a Southern thing? Check it out here
  16. Dilly's is to Five Guys as White House Subs (a Jersey shore reference) is to Subway. I hope Ocean City offers eating benefits that at least partially compensate for your self-imposed burger compromise. ← I know Five Guys is no where near equal to a Dilly Cheeseburger, but I have yet to find an outstanding burger in OC. One thing we do have is a pleasant drive down Rte.9 to North Wildwood and a stop at Maui's Dog House. We were very happy to find them open this season since the place is for sale. I have the Dressed, my wife has the Soprano and we share an order of Salty Balls, washed down of course with the Stewart's Root Beer.
  17. The Crab Trap in Somers Point is the old standby. All of the locals I know head there when friends or family come to visit. I also enjoy Smitty's Clam Bar in Somers Point. Take out on the dock at the Lobster House in Cape my is fun. For a nice breakfast in Ocean City, I like Arlene's on Asbury near 7th, on the west side. I keep hearing about a place in Leeds Point called the Oyster Creek Inn I haven't tried it yet but it has been getting lots of good reviews on Chowhound. Chowhound
  18. I think the Dietz & Watson Vadalia onions in a jar are better.
  19. When I lived in Bucks County, one of my favorite outings was a ride up the River Rd. (Rt. 32) from Morrisville to New Hope Stopping at Dilly's Corner at the Stockton bridge. I really loved the Dilly Cheeseburger. Alas, now that I live in Ocean City, trips to Dilly's are few and far between. The substitute I have found is a Five Guys cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo. My wife and I have been to two locations, Somers Point and Rio Grande. We have enjoyed both very much. I find the burgers fresh and juicy. They say their beef is never frozen, perhaps that gives the fresh taste. I do agree about the size of the order of fries. One small order is more than enough for the two of us. Also, I enjoy the free peanuts while we wait for our order.
  20. I was concerned when I saw the Sale sign on Maui's last season, but we were in North Wildwood today and it is still there. Liz said they opened a few weeks ago and plan to be there for the season. We had our usual. Dressed for me, Soprano for my wife, a shared order of Salty Balls and two rootbeers Yum
  21. Popcorn balls. Candy coated popcorn compressed into a sphere the size of a baseball and wrapped in celophane.
  22. I keep seeing refrences to the Hot Dog Thread. Can someone tell me where I can find it?
  23. I just went to Asianfoodgrocer.com. I found the snacks and many other interesting items.
  24. I just found Scotch Broth at the Acme in Somers Point (NJ) It was $4.29 a can. I passed.
  25. I must confess to being a "Brand snob" for many years. Now that I am retired, and watching my pennies a little more, I will go to the store brand on many items. However there are two items where my brand loyalty will never waiver. Mayo = Hellmann's Worchestershire = Lea & Perrins There are a few things that are not permitted in my house; Minute rice Instant potatoes Miracle whip
