  1. I do not buy cookbooks for a "collection of recipes". I buy them for the story they tell, the passion they fuel, the nuance I might not have realized. I do not buy many. My last 2 were Falastin and The Rise, I have sold many but I keep a core collection. They tell the story of my evolution as a cook and food lover, and I find inspiration. I am aware of the issues you present. Publishing has always been a hard game and the new avenues (that in ways mimic the music industry) make it tougher - but I personally still fnd that they have a place. They need to have content well above and beyond "a collection of recipes". When Sami Tamimi can tell me more honestly about the core of Palestinian issues than respected political journals I have to tip my hat. As to the physical "fall apart" I can only roll my eyes in disbelief.

In my local farmers markets I associate asparagus with Easter and strawberries a little further out. Of course we live in a global food world with transport and imports from other weather and growing zones. How are the berries looking at this time for you? Whatt kind of lamb does daughter favor?

@Allura I love the blend of traditions. If time permits can you elaborate on the Easter Pie? Thanks for reminding me abut the coconuit macaroons that are in Kosher section featured now. I like a good moist one. Used to indulge after exams at a bakery at origonal Farmers Market in the historically Jewish Fairfax district. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfax_District,_Los_Angeles

Decided to make my Green Thursday soup today since I prefer broccoli soup rested over night. Simply done with half big crown roasted with fish sauce as the salt and olive oil. Other half simmered in water with chickn powder as the salt, lots of blackpepper, touch of Dijon mustard (like it with crucifers) All buzzed with stick blender and smoothed out with a bit of coconut milk. Threw a handful of frozen green peas in too. Will have tomorrow with some green onion on top and a squeeze of tangelo. The poor tree is bearing for Easter instead of Christmas. Crazy world.

Is the black currant balsamic somthing you purchase or that you infused? I think of black currant as deepening the flvor but maybe losing the brightness of the vinegar. Do you guys enjoy it in salad preps as well?
  6. Interesting because my limited descriptive powers have always associated pandan and the smell of fragrant Thai jasmine rice with a sort of vanilla aroma/taste. I had a thing for the pandan Swiss roll at some local markets for a while.
  7. Maybe we arre not talking same image. I went back to my source material. The tag in the deli case and the label on my purchased packet call it Hungarian Headcheese - imagine from paprika thus the bright color. Made in house.
  8. 2 questions - what is the slingshot aimed aat and what is the shiny black in the leaf cup?

The "gluten free" matzo products were a new one for me today. A guy was upset at the store today as he couldnlt find the gluten free panko for his celiac diagnosed wife. I shunted him over to the "Kosher" aisle and suggested buzzing those as a breading. Life! Ya never know.
  11. That occurs in many countries - confusng to the ininitiated

Well the grocery store was disapointing. No lamb worth purchasing. Butcher said he did not receive any lamb he ordered! Only thing that caught my eye were the one pack of meaty pork neck boes. They will go low and slow resting on a bed of garlic, garden rosemary and orchard sour orange slices with a light mustard rub. There was well priced broccholi - so a fat tight crown will anchor the Green Thursday soup and leftovers will serve for the tide over on Sunday as the smell of roasting pork entices, Sides still thinking. No more shoppig so it will be what I have in house.
  13. As always I love to see the pale thick glass with the deep blue rim. The tortilla warmers crack me up. Around here they have started mainstream marketing them around sporting events - piled up with sports team logos

Ha! You just stuck your foot in Jaeger - get back to the Schnitzel topic and define it there Happy vacation.
  15. As usual you are asking a broad general question. The 2 responses above make a lot of sense, What is store bought? Shelf stable, mass marketed? Or local bakery/shop? What is a persons frame of reference for the item? So open ended as to defy a responsible response.

Cross cultural interactions can be beasutiful. Can you explain farfel dressing and how it fits in the traditional meal?
  19. Kind of like the jello/gelatin molds of the past. Collectibles
  20. See them often so? I did not use them the couple tmes I made a country pate but that was before shelled ones were so accessible. (think pink). They sure add a pretty note and contrast.
  21. That first image with the sausage alongside glistens like headcheese. So how does a Bauernwurst/farmers wurst differ fron a country pate?

GoLden Mountain is not often discussed here though it is so common elsewhere. Do you use it often?
  23. We are a tiny bit spoiled with low food prices. Visitors from Europe and my sis from Oz just shake their heads on both food & gas
  24. As an older American I have lived through inflationary cycles, economic crises. Gas? We stood in line during the "energy crisis". I don't think you can tease politics, global finance, big biz practices and all that apart. And this is not a forum for that. Just tryng to deal what is in front of me now. I am not an activist nor do I have any inout into policy making. I don't think consumer activity on an individual level is of much impact. Carry on. Another cycle will emerge. I know food and cooking and I can make a feast with little if need be.
