  1. Funny because more than once I used to see the pickled feet in huge glass jars not so long ago. Maybe when Smart & Final catered more to the restaurant trade - maybe Mexican restos? Also at some gas stations. Here - Los Angeles.
  2. Have you considered dialing down the aggression? Let it soften - really soften - and use the potato masher and then the whisk. Like with creaming butter. Do you add liquid. The pic looks pretty loose. Those chemicals they use to congeal it may be resisting you. I've only ever done it for unbaked cheesecakes (yes with the canned cherry pie filing topping_) but I don't remember lumps.
  3. I meant a human to provide a perhaps balance, ability to call 911 and encourage safety.
  4. A housemate perhaps?
  5. Yes I forgot Latin markets, We both have the population density of wonderful different cultures.
  6. Obviously not, but Korean, pan-Asian markets tend to have much better prices on produce - in my limited L.A. experience.
  7. A just offered a point of view , not an editor's critique. Yes some writers can go on with n point, loving the sound of their "voice". Oops maybe you will point out I am one of those
  8. But are you getting them at an ethnic market which would make sense?
  9. This made me think of our recent discussion about Campari tomatoes and trademark. I don;t see marks. Huh. Does not sound like it protects the guys in the parking lot roasting/tumbling away https://alter.com/trademarks/hatch-85556144
  10. But it is the unique "terroir" of the Hatch Valley in New Mexico that is the unique/special flavor - they say. Not sure how long that can hold with significant ongoing climate change.
  11. Storage conditions are a major factor. I've seen them here with stepmother who fails to listen/comprehend when I say they need cool/dark and air flow. A plastic bag with onions! - they sprout. My sweet potato was ancient - 6 months or more?) and had the long sprout arms already with adorable itsy bitsy leaves (think baby fingernails) lusting for light. As for a rotting potato - that smell is unmistakably nasty. I've pointed it out more than once to produce guys. They are now much more meticulous - taking all out of bins, vacuuming the surfaces. Almost a bit much. They say the smell is similar to rattlesnake dens but then again "they" also say the dens smell like cucumber ??? Hardly seems similar.
  12. Not gonna kill you but what is repeated to you as a child tends to stick. Bon Appetit did a nice little summary here https://www.bonappetit.com/story/can-you-eat-sprouted-potatoes
  13. It was a long one and all the sprouts were on one end so I basically cut it in half. I didn't do the toothpick thing cuz root so not come out of the cut end. Easy fun save. I still crave a well roasted one but when I get my kitchen back...
  14. So did I yesterday. Can't garden now and no friends with vegetable gardens.
  15. Two nice values that hold pretty steady. Yesterday Argentinian wild shrimp for $9/lb. and small avocados $6/bag. They have correspondingly small pits so lots of flesh each. My bag had 8. Scallions were awfully skinny and 89 cents

    Dinner 2022

All great sides to eat for a long leisurely meal with the lovely meat. Happy Birthday to Charlie!
  17. My potato misadventure was less stinky. Recently a sweet potato. I knew it was there but was having an issue about oven use with step mom in town. I wanted it roasted and skin bit crispy. Anyway it was in the pantry which is a closet with a door - cool and dark. Yup - sprouted quite vigorously at some point. l was raised to think the sprouts rendered the potato no good. So I cut part off and stuck it in a jar of water. It is looking quite grateful for its new situation. (yes those are insect skeletons on the sill - I have a spider in the upper corner that performs pest control for me. Sorry for the neck strain...
  18. That is weird on salt water taffy - not like they are using ocean water! The artificial banana is a major gag inducer of mine, (Circus Peanuts run a close second) One year I ran out of Halloween candy and ran over to the 7-11 around the corner. Could not drive cuz of all the rug rats jamming the road. All they had left was Now & Later. Ex picked all the banana ones out - the smell drove me to sit on front porch and pass candy out from there.
  19. No but often seen articles about it incl pics. We have those baskets and bins for mix match in many tourist places. Often what the kids remember most about a place.
  20. Oh! and Ice Cubes - first had them on Catalina. The link is to Economy an NYC candy wonderlamd https://economycandy.com/product/ice-cubes-milk-chocolate/
  21. Oh yes candy cigarettes and cigars. Wax lips. And the candy necklaces and bracelets. A ot of tourist places used to repcate the candy store wkth bins of the old fashioned stuff. Still exist?> And our childhood fascination - salt water taffy. The candy store on Catalina (Santa Catalina Islamd) had a display window with an electronic machine that pulled and stretched it. It did not even taste like much but we were in awe? https://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g29121-d6796045-i130635926-Lloyd_s_of_Avalon_Confectionary-Avalon_Catalina_Island_California.html
  22. Interesting data collection points but nothing approaching research conclusions. We do need to monitor. From the article "The temporal and spatial variations in MTRS are significantly related to observed patterns of average sea surface temperature and the Mean Temperature of the Catch. This suggests that restaurant menus may be used as a complementary information source regarding changes in marine ecosystems and fisheries and the seafood sector’s responses to these changes. This study also highlights the value of using unconventional information sources and their applications in the detection of climate impacts on oceans and their dependent human communities."

    Dinner 2022

@David Lebovitz says it is done in France where he lives - white & rose. https://www.davidlebovitz.com/the-glass-half-full/
  24. I usually find them during MLB baseball season. Here in L.A. the companies do up the packaging with the local team logo(Los Angeles Dodgers). Usually in produce aisle.
  25. Oh punkin - don't perpetuate a stereotype Yes also very much looking forward to future adventures. Truthfully I did not watch the videos - I just prefer to look at still images and imagine (no not a control freak at all, at all)
