  1. Talked to my mom today and she thinks that my dad would like some Japanese style seafood. I think I saw some items like that at Blue Water, another option I thought of is Tojo's. If given the choice, which place would be the better option? And if none of the above, is there another higher end Japanese place that I could take him to? Thanks again for the help .
  2. Hello, never thought I'd have anything to contribute but I was surprised to find the recipe that I've been using for years in RecipeGullet. It's the Chocolate Chip Cookies With Pudding recipe. When I first tried this recipe out I found them to be a bit greasy so I reduced the amount of butter to 3/4 cup. I made them this past Saturday and they turned out well (just by my standards ). The pictures, if you're interested, are here.
  3. Wow, from the pictures on their site it does look like real okonomiyaki. Can't wait to try this place out. Thanks for making my day .
  4. Went to the Night Market tonight. Here are some pictures. Had: - Strawberry frappe - Takoyaki (half tako and half ebi) - Dragon Beard - Har Gow - Asparagus wrapped in bacon - Garlic chicken skewer - Beef skewer - Mango gelato - Vegetable bunguh bbang (fish-shaped bread) - Ho dduk (Korean ricecake filled with cinnamon, sugar and peanuts) Wasn't really that hungry since I had dumplings and kimbap a bit before going. I also wanted to try some of the bubble waffle from Sam (dancing guy) but the line-up was too long, I'll get them next time. I saw 2 places selling okonomiyaki but they both looked pretty bad. Okonomi means "the way you like it" and yaki is "fried/grilled". The ingredients vary by region but I think the basic ingredients are flour, eggs, grated yam, seafood and cabbage. One of the places even topped it with some yakisoba (fried noodles) but the colour looked off. Still might give them a try next time.
  5. Ah yes, ho dduk (the cinnamon and sugar filled rice pancakes) are very good. Had my first one in Korea about 13 years ago. It's one of the things I'll always get during the Night Market.
  6. Hmmm, I'm not sure if the Esso station is really visible from Cardero's. Narrowed it down a bit, if we're going more high-end I think I'd prefer Blue Water over C. Probably crossing Rodney's off since I think they'd prefer a more quiet place and because I don't like oysters . Sea Harbour would probably appeal to my mom since she loves Chinese food. But then again this is Father's Day. Other than this I haven't really narrowed the places down much .
  7. I'm thinking of spending most of my morning/afternoon on Saturday there. Still not sure if I'll go on Friday. It'll be my first time at EAT! so I don't really know what to expect, have a feeling I'll be overwhelmed.
  8. Any plain cheesecake recipe really. I think I'll play with flavours after I've got the basics down. Don't have a specific type of cheesecake in mind, anything that's worked for you and that's yummy. I'm planning on getting Bo Friberg's Professional Pastry Chef book, is there a good recipe in there? If not is there a book that someone can recommend? Any additional tips and hints are appreciated .
  9. Was hoping to go on Friday to do some takoyaki scouting but didn't get a chance because of the weather. I'll try and go again this week, but not sure since EAT! is going on. Also looking forward to hearing what other people think of the stalls this year.
  10. Thanks Karen, I should probably just ask my dad. I'm sure he'll be able to give me more details.
  11. Yeah, I think the first time I went to a Candyland store was in Yaohan. Was pretty happy to see it in Crystal Mall after.
  12. T&T or various Candyland locations are your best bet. I live in Burnaby so I head over to Crystal Mall for my Japanese candy fix. Most recently I tried Red Bean Kit Kat.
  13. Hard to do a brunch on Father's Day since we're kinda busy on Sunday mornings, which is a shame since I've heard about a lot of Mother's/Father's Day brunch specials. I haven't really managed to shorten the list since I'm pretty lost when it comes to seafood. Think I'll print out all the menus and then consult my mom about what she thinks. Since I have the time I might even drop by each place to check out the ambience. I'll continue to update as I narrow down my search, thanks for all the help so far. I'll probably need more when I get caught between choices.
  14. Ok, I'll be sure to keep those places off the list. No one's mentioned them so far, so I guess it isn't a real loss.
  15. Just checked out their website "You can select your desired delicacy direct from our showcase, and our expert chefs will prepare it in the sauce of your choice." Sounds good to me. I'll also add this place to the list.
  16. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your meal. I'm wondering if Sea Harbour Seafood is the same place that my cousin suggested for lobster, she said it was very good. If it is I'll be adding this place to my list. Looks like my mom wants to go to Sun Sui Wah on my birthday, which is 2 days after Father's Day so I don't think it's an option. Hmmm, I was wondering if the quality really wasn't there or if people were just turned off by the high prices. Happy to hear that the quality was there for you. Wow, a lot of interesting suggestions. I'll take a look at each of their menus to narrow it down. Usually we'll be going for sushi or Chinese style seafood but I kind of wanted to take him some place a bit different. I think he's pretty open about how it's prepared as long as it's fresh and of good quality. I heard from my mom that they went to some place around Granville Island (mentioned that the floating Esso station was close by), a place that was on a boat or a place that resembled one. She said that they didn't enjoy their meal there. Does anyone know what restaurant she may be referring to so that I can avoid adding it to my list. Thanks for the input so far guys, really helpful for someone who's always avoided seafood places.
  17. Not a big seafood fan but my dad is, looking for a place to take him for Father's Day but I'm not really sure where to go. I guess some obvious choices would be the Blue Water Cafe and C Restaurant, but I'm hearing some mixed reviews about both places. Any type of seafood restaurant is good, not looking for anything in particular. Should I just decide between Blue Water or C? Any good or bad experiences with either of them? Are there any other places out there that people like to get their seafood fix?

    Tea & Chocolate

A tea that I have with dessert/chocolates at times is a regular old English Breakfast with a bit of cream in it.
  19. A Korean BBQ place in the Burnaby/New West area that I know of is Mi Sun Rae. It's pretty cheap and good. But like most Korean places they're understaffed and most of the servers are more comfortable with Korean.
  20. Wow, that's a nice looking book. Thanks for the tip, I'll check my local Chapters to see if they have a copy. Any more suggestions? The more the better.
  21. I've been wanting to bake these for a while but don't want to make too many bad batches. Can anyone recommend a few that have worked for them? Cocoa brand recommendations would be handy too. Thanks in advance.
  22. Not sure, a friend of mine who's in TO for school says that the Chinese here is better. Actually she says everything in Van is better .
  23. The first few places I head over to when I go to T&T is the bakery and the hot food section. Great steamed buns, chicken is a personal favourite. They have some dim sum items that aren't for taking home to snack on too. The last few times I tried to get egg tarts the person in front of me took the last few packs. If you're tired and don't feel like cooking there are lots of pre-made things you can buy too like ma-po tofu and various cooked meats. The snack aisles are definitely worth a look too. They have a lot of deals after 6, but prepare to battle it out with other hungry customers.
  24. Each time I've asked around people have suggested that I skip the line at Stephos and head over to Taki's. Have yet to go to either location. Can anyone comment on this?
